neilochka "How you doin'?" he asked his former lover, as they met on the street. "I haven't seen you in ages." He remembered how much she used to love to put her head on his chest, and how warm she felt. "I have an appointment," she said. "Oh. Then I won't hold you," he answered. "Take care of yourself," she said, in a tone with such a finality that it was as if she had an appointment with an Amtrak train to move far away. #nyc 1w

neilochka "You can take the umbrella for yourself," he said. "I don't mind a little rain." "It's OK. We can share it," she answered. "We can protect each other." This was his Tyler's tenth date since moving to the city, and the first time he ever heard a woman suggest that she would protect him. That she could protect him. It's something his father and his grandfather, both proud patriarchs would have rejected, but Tyler was not like the men in his family. He was like his mother. She would have appreciated how he was protecting Anne while Anne protected him in return, their fingers touching playfully as they gripped the handle of the six dollar umbrella. Tyler imagined a fortress of warmth and light that enveloped them as they left the cafe and crossed the street which isolated them from the gray, angry pounding of the rain. There would be no more dating for Tyler. He had found the woman he would marry. 2w
