nbcnews Over the weekend, 33 #lions rescued from circuses began their journey from #SouthAmerica to a sanctuary in #SouthAfrica. "They lived in small cages on the backs of trucks for their entire lives. Some of them had their teeth bashed in with steel pipes in circuses in Colombia and Peru. Some of them had their claws removed. ... It is a wonderful feeling to bring them back to their home," said Jan Creamer, president of @animal_defenders_international, which carried out the largest airlift of lions in history.

nbcnews When Leo Guthmiller was an addict and petty criminal, he knew little about the federal government's harsh drug sentencing laws. The worst he'd endured was 90 days at the county lockup. Then, last April, nearly two years after he'd stopped popping painkillers and smoking methamphetamine, Guthmiller was arrested by two federal agents.
He later learned why: a junkie and his girlfriend told investigators that Guthmiller had introduced them to his meth dealer around the time he was getting sober. That made him the middleman in a street-level drug distribution scheme. Guthmiller was suddenly facing at least 10 years behind bars as a co-conspirator. The charge thrust him into a raging debate over a pillar of America's war on drugs: mandatory-minimum sentences.

nbcnews The movement has a hashtag — they call it the #CoatHangerRebellion.
Activists for decades have decried the abortion laws in deeply Catholic Poland, which are among the most restrictive in Europe. Their anger has now boiled over.
There's one thing that both anti-abortion and abortion-rights activists agree on. A shift is underway in Europe — in politics, prosecution and protest. Battle lines are drawn for what threatens to be a nasty fight, with both sides taking cues from the U.S.
In Part two of a five part series on Europe’s #Abortion Fight, NBC News looks at how a bid to ban abortion outright has sent thousands of protesters onto the streets. Read more at nbcnews.com/EUAbortionFight.
