mschiot Violette Morris competed in Boxing, archery, diving, javelin throwing, weightlifting, soccer playing, Greco-Roman wrestling, racing.Violette was famous for her athletic and automotive prowess, but she also drew attention by living openly as a lesbian, for dressing in men's suits, and for fistfighting during soccer matches. The French Women's Athletic Federation refused her request for a license renewal in 1927 and prevented her from participating in the 1928 Olympic summer games in Amsterdam. Violette made the news for electing to undergo a double mastectomy so she would be more comfortable behind the wheel. She ran an auto parts store in Paris until 1929.In the mid-1930s, Violette was recruited by a member of the Nazi security service and invited to Berlin for the 1936 Olympic Summer Games, where she was received by Adolf Hitler with "much pomp and circumstance," according to Jean-Francois Bouzanquet, the author of Fast Ladies: Female Racing Drivers 1888-1970. After that, it was straight downhill to an evil end for Violette Morris. It's said she provided Germany with information that helped the Nazis take Paris in 1940. She spied for the Germans, transported black market goods, and was said to be an active torturer of resisters. On April 26, 1944, she was ambushed by a dozen or so machine guns, by members of the French Resistance, while out driving in a supercharged Citroen.#butchhistory #french#olympics @thebeatjuice 16h

mschiot König was an East German swimmer who won two gold medals at the 1985 European Championships. A victim of the infamous state-sponsored doping program, König was made to take performance-enhancing drugs disguised as "vitamins" from the age of thirteen. Following the reunification of Germany in 2005, König was among over 150 East German athletes who filed a civil lawsuit against the German Olympic Sports Federation (the successor to the East German Olympic Committee). The Federation later agreed to a one-time payment to the athletes as compensation for the health problems (in König case, this includes severe depression and a metabolic disorder) caused from the program. #butchhistory #olympics 3d

mschiot Nine-time U.S. Olympic figure skating champion and member of the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. After retiring from competition, Owen enjoyed a successful career as a coach for the American figure skating team. At the 1961 U.S. National Championships, both of Owen's daughters won gold - 21 year old namesake Maribel in pairs and 16 year old Laurence in ladies' singles. Tragically, all three Owen women perished the following month, when a plane carrying all eighteen members of the U.S. figure skating team crashed en route to the World Championships in Prague. The USFS Memorial Fund, created following the crash, has since granted over $10M to young figure skaters across the country, including Michelle Kwan. #butchhistory #usfigureskatkng#usfs#olympics 1w

mschiot Dawn Fraser is regarded as the finest female sprint swimmer of them all; winner of four gold and four silver Olympic medals, holder of 39 world records. Just six months before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Fraser was driving a car when it crashed. Her 60-year-old mother, Rose, who had been sleeping in the backseat, was killed. she went to Tokyo in 1964 and won her third consecutive gold medal for her late mother. Wearing her mother's wedding ring, she stood by the pool and sobbed. Then she started blasting on a bugle while poolside, marching at the wrong time, and trying to steal a flag from the Emperor's palace (a jailable offence). The Japanese authorities and Australian public forgave her (she was made Australian of the Year in 1964), but, in a very unpopular move, the Australia Swimming Union banned her from swimming for a decade. Fraser has since remarked that she was banned for wearing a comfortable but unofficial swimsuit (that she had stitched herself) in the Olympic opening parade and one of her heat races, because the official uniform swimsuit was ill-fitting. She now co-manages a cheese shop and pub with a woman with whom she has been in a long-term relationship#butchhistory 2w
