mountainsofmountains It's hard to believe that one day and a month ago today we were standing here, enjoying this view of Everest... More magnificent than I ever could have imagined. The day before everything changed for #Nepal. The road ahead is a long and difficult one. 3h

mountainsofmountains 4/25 leaving Gokyo village early in the morning in a light snow. Noah climbs the terminal moraine from which we will drop down to cross the Ngozumba Glacier the longest glacier in the Himalayas. Behind us in the clouds is Cho Oyo, the 6th highest mountain in the world. #NEPALiLOVEYOU #gokyo 2w

mountainsofmountains "Mountains are fountains, not only of rivers and fertile soil, but of men. Therefore we are all, in some sense, mountaineers, and going to the mountains is going home." John Muir
4/23 crossing the high pasturelands on our way to Machermo, one of the Khumbu villages badly damaged in the earthquake two days later. The IPPG Rescue Post in Machermo and Community Action Nepal are helping to rebuild this and other remote mountain villages in the Khumbu. Go to IPPG.net and to learn more.

mountainsofmountains Noah and I were able to extend our layover in Istanbul for a few days on our way back to New York from Nepal. Turkey is beautiful, but it's bittersweet to wash the dust of the Himalayas off us after such a journey. 3w

mountainsofmountains 5/05: Noah and I are back in Lukla, planning to fly to KTM tomorrow. This is our 18th day in the sulu-khumbu, and the last 10 day have been physically and mentally challenging in many ways, at times scary, confusing a little disappointing but also uplifting in terms of the generosity and kindness we've encountered in both locals and foreigners we've met along the way. Most of all we feel very lucky and immensely grateful to be safe, and in many ways removed from the epicenter of this enormous disaster.

I took this pic of Noah crossing the Ngozumba Glacier on our way to the Cho-La Pass and eventually EBC an hour or so before the earthquake. The conditions were quite bad that day - little visibility, lots of snow, very cold. Shortly after arriving in Dragnog we felt the walls of the tea house begin to shake and after a few moments of all of us looking at one another, the Sherpa host yelled for everyone to get outside. We didn't really know what was happening... we thought maybe a landslide or avalanche... But we ran without grabbing our coats, as the shaking got more intense. When it finally stopped we all stood there for a moment, stunned, breathing heavily. We all knew immediately that it was bad. In the 10 minutes after the quake that we still have satellite wifi, someone checked Twitter and messages were already pouring in from all over Nepal giving us some indication of just how bad things really might be, and a few of us managed to get a quick email out to our family. The next morning, we decided to forgo the Cho-La Pass and to head down valley in search of more info and comms, and so began the two day walk to Dingboche, to the only wifi single for days and the mass of confusion, here-say and crowds of people from all over the Khumbu trying to get some answers....

mountainsofmountains We've been doing a clockwise circuit of the Sulu-Khumbu region of the Himalayas, the slightly less traveled route that will include Gokyo Ri, Cho-la pass, Kala Pattar etc. Noah and I reached Gokyo today at 4800 meters. As we hiked up valley, directly ahead of us is the magnificent Cho-Oyu, and to our back is Thamserku (seen here). Tomorrow from the peak of Gokyo, if the clouds clear, we will see not just Everest but many of the great Himalayan peaks!! 1mon
