mjsolofamensgrooming "Who is rich? He that rejoices in his portion." - Benjamin Franklin
--------
It is easy for us to feel the pressure to pursue a life of wealth and riches because society teaches that these are indicators of success. A luxury foreign car (or two) in the driveway, a million dollar home, brand name clothing and accessories, and credit cards galore over cash in hand. But these material things and luxuries do not define richness, nor success. I believe we should all enjoy the fruits of our labor, and if one can afford such luxuries, then they are blessed and certainly rich in those blessings. But just as rich, and just as blessed, are those that are content in the portions they have, regardless of their weight in gold. It's a great thing to work hard and afford nice things, but we should not be so consumed in our lives to want nice things only to lose an appreciation for what we already have. If you often feel the pressure to keep up with the joneses, remember that life's journey is not a race nor a competition. We all have unique paths, so it is important to understand that wealth is relative to what fills your heart and soul with happiness and joy and reward. Be content in your portions, because there are always others whose portions are much, much, MUCH less than your own. Stay blessed everyone and happy Aloha Friday! 🏽#spreadlove #spreadaloha #livealoha #mjsolofamensgrooming #mjsolofa #groomingmentobebettermen #notetoself #inspiration #motivation #dailybread #motivationalspeaker #walkinfaith #faithandfamily #groomingfortheheartandsoul #happinessisachoice #godisgood #countyourblessings #bethankful #wordoftheday #quoteoftheday #dailyquote #inspirationalbarber #alohaspirit #aloha #dadlife #singledad #blessed #manoffaith #faith #letgoandletgod

mjsolofamensgrooming I've used each one the chairs in the Parlor in the same sequence you see them pictured here. But nothing that I've done, nor that I am doing, nor that I will do as a Barber in any of these chairs, including the shave I'm seen doing here, is something that wasn't already done for centuries before me, nor will it be different to what will be done for centuries after me. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, because the trade of Barbering doesn't need to be reinvented,....I'm just trying to do my part to restore it's prestige, uphold it's integrity, honor it's humble history and traditions, maintain it's professionalism, and hopefully leave it in better condition that when I started so that the wheel of Barbering stays well oiled and running for the hundreds of generations of Barbers who will follow behind me. mjsolofamensgrooming The backyard Barber boogie, because all of us as Barbers started somewhere in the beginning of our careers. We should always stay rooted and reminded of the humble haircut attempts we did on friends and family at Barber College, in kitchens, bathrooms and backyards that all turned out a whole lot differently than what we originally set out to give them. And while some haircuts we give now may still not come out the way we want, just remember that the level of your customer service should always be greater than the quality of your fade,....just make sure you tried to do your best. Stay humble, stay rooted, stay in YOUR OWN lane, and don't try to be the second coming of some Barber you follow on social media,...rather focus on being the first coming of the best barber that YOU...CAN....BE! 🏽#mjsolofa #mjsolofamensgrooming #groomingmentobebettermen #spreadlove #spreadaloha #mensgrooming #mensfashion #menswear #gentleman #theartofbeingagentleman #faithandfamily #fatherhood #fellowship #motivationalspeaker #inspirationalbarber #shaveparlor #oldschoolbarber #traditionalbarber #tonsorialartist #dadlife #singledad #godisgood #walkinfaith #aloha #alohaspirit #countyourblessings #bethankful #teamsolofa #samoan #aspiretoinspire 2d

mjsolofamensgrooming Are you having "one of those days"? When everything right goes wrong, & your favorite word of the day is "Really???!!!". You want to throw in the towel, throw your hands in the air and give up, and just walk away. From a bad day at the office, challenges with the kids at home, a fallout with a close friend, an argument with your spouse, mounting overdue bills, relationship issues,...any number of things could have made today "one of those days." But not everything about this day was bad. You woke up today,...that was a blessing. You had something to eat, something to drink...that was a blessing. You may have smiled at someone, or something...that was a blessing. You're alive, and breathing,...yup, you got it,....a blessing. Amidst the chaos of life's many challenges is a calmness that often gets overlooked,....the calmness of being grateful for the small things that are good (the sum of which will always balance the scales in our favor). So yes, in times of disparity, challenge & adversity, feel free to look up & throw your hands in the air, BUT do it with gratitude & thanksgiving for all that God has blessed you with because so many people would gladly trade places with you, especially the ones who didn't get to wake up this morning. Life is too short for "one of those days" to be a negative connotation. Make everyday one of those purposeful days to smile about, to be happy about about, & to try and repeat (and appreciate) tomorrow!! 🏽#spreadlove #spreadaloha #livealoha #mjsolofamensgrooming #mjsolofa #groomingmentobebettermen #notetoself #inspiration #motivation #dailybread #motivationalspeaker #walkinfaith #faithandfamily #groomingfortheheartandsoul #happinessisachoice #godisgood #countyourblessings #bethankful #wordoftheday #quoteoftheday #dailyquote #inspirationalbarber #alohaspirit #aloha #dadlife #singledad #blessed #manoffaith #faith #letgoandletgod 2d

mjsolofamensgrooming It doesn't take much for us to get derailed in life's journey. The death of a loved one, a divorce, a job loss, a career change, and even parenthood can cause us to lose sight of the greatest blessing we can afford,...being alive. I'd always been active and athletic growing up, which is what kept me on the slimmer side of being a 6'3" Samoan male despite how much I ate, and no matter what I ate. But then I blinked and somehow 20 plus years passed me by, and in the process I'd experienced all of the life altering scenarios I mentioned earlier (as many of us have). As a divorced single dad trying to balance running a business and coparenting my daughter, it was always easier eating on the go at fast food places and conveniences stores just to satisfy my hunger at the time. I started accepting my weight gains and growing size as being normal for a Samoan, because culturally Samoans believe that the bigger you are, the healthier you are. But at 45 years old and feeling the effects of being overweight at 250lbs (the heaviest I've ever been), I turned to The Boss's stepdad @airfitcarlo who is a personal trainer, and his business @myfitrxlifestyle for help. Accepting his 60 day challenge, I embarked on a nutrition program learning about healthier choices, portion control and moderation, while receiving daily coaching to ensure I stayed accountable to my weight loss goals. I lost 30lbs and reached my active college weight of 220lbs. I preach often here on social media that "if I can do it, anyone can do it", and here I am still amazed that after 20 plus years of abusing my body with food and sports injuries, I am feeling healthier and happier and more energetic than ever before. Yes it was tough, but I'd been through tougher challenges in my lifetime, and so have you,...so YOU TOO can truly become a better version of yourself mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually by choosing to do so. Thank you @myfitrxlifestyle for giving me the knowledge to live a more purposeful, happier, and healthier life for my daughter and family and loved ones, and I hope it inspires at least one person to choose to do the same for them self too. 🏽#transformationtuesday 3d

mjsolofamensgrooming Barbering has history dating back as far as 3500 BC. Nothing that's happening in Barbering today hasn't already been done before, and in many cases, done many times over. Whatever reason people get into Barbering now, it was a reason that someone got into Barbering at some point in the decades and centuries before us. Things will always be developing and changing in Barbering, because that is the nature of trends, but there are only so many ways to cut the same haircut, only so many types of clippers and scissors and products to be made that will all do the same/similar things, and only so many times people can try to reinvent a trade that's been around before the Pyramids in Egypt. But one thing has not changed about Barbering since its inception, and it is the single most important component for success in this trade that so many of today's new and aspiring Barbers are unfortunately missing,....that Barbering is about service and serving the needs of your client, and not serving the needs of your ego. There is a current trend in Barbering right now that focuses more on which Barber is better, which product is better, or even which tools are better, instead of focusing on how to make the clients haircut and experience better, how to make a Barber's level of customer service better, or more importantly, how to restore the prominence of the trade's reputation and perception. Trends come and go, and what's hot today will be what's not tomorrow, but the only tried and true variable that will sustain any Barber's career will always be by putting the service of customers as the number one priority. Just some food for industry thought. 🏽#mjsolofa #mjsolofamensgrooming #groomingmentobebettermen #spreadlove #spreadaloha #mensgrooming #mensfashion #menswear #gentleman #theartofbeingagentleman #faithandfamily #fatherhood #fellowship #motivationalspeaker #inspirationalbarber #shaveparlor #oldschoolbarber #traditionalbarber #tonsorialartist #dadlife #singledad #godisgood #walkinfaith #aloha #alohaspirit #countyourblessings #bethankful #teamsolofa #samoan #aspiretoinspire 4d

mjsolofamensgrooming Happy Monday everyone! Hoping everyone has started their new week off on the good foot, rested from the weekend and excited at the opportunities that lay ahead. Remember life is full of choices,....you can choose every morning to wake up willing to look good and feel good and do your best in the hopes of living your best life now, OR you could just settle for whatever you get, for wherever you are, for however you currently live....the choice is always yours to make. 🏽#spreadlove #spreadaloha #livealoha #mjsolofamensgrooming #mjsolofa #groomingmentobebettermen #notetoself #inspiration #motivation #dailybread #motivationalspeaker #walkinfaith #faithandfamily #groomingfortheheartandsoul #happinessisachoice #godisgood #countyourblessings #bethankful #wordoftheday #quoteoftheday #dailyquote #inspirationalbarber #alohaspirit #aloha #dadlife #singledad #blessed #manoffaith #faith #letgoandletgod 5d

mjsolofamensgrooming I love this photo I found online, because it reminds me of the advice that my Dad once gave me when I was a young boy. As a consummate gentleman, business owner and salesman, my Dad could always be seen well dressed, even wearing a shirt and tie and sport coat in American Samoa's intense heat and humidity while he went out on sales calls or to meet with his clients. His advice to me was "Son, always try to look your best because you'll never get a second chance to make a first impression." You don't have to spend a million bucks to look and feel like a million bucks, you just have to make a conscious effort to dress for success, dress for the job you want, and dress for the best first impression you can hope to make. Love and miss you Dad,...thank you for molding me into the man, father, son, brother, gentleman, and businessman that I am today. 🏽️Sunday's bests! 🕶🏽 #mjsolofa #mjsolofamensgrooming #groomingmentobebettermen #spreadlove #spreadaloha #mensgrooming #mensfashion #menswear #gentleman #theartofbeingagentleman #faithandfamily #fatherhood #fellowship #motivationalspeaker #inspirationalbarber #shaveparlor #oldschoolbarber #traditionalbarber #tonsorialartist #dadlife #singledad #godisgood #walkinfaith #aloha #alohaspirit #countyourblessings #bethankful #teamsolofa #samoan #aspiretoinspire 5d

mjsolofamensgrooming Life is a journey that will have you traveling through some tough terrains. Sure there are smooth roads and pathways, but more often than not, we find ourselves having to navigate up rocky hills, down steep cliffs, and over uneven surfaces and potholes. For some, life's journey is a sprint to the end, and the spills and falls over the uneven terrain are wounds to be dealt with after crossing the finish line. For others it is a marathon that takes endurance, perseverance and patience, and while it takes longer to get to the finish line, you will have experienced the beautiful landscape, the majestic scenery, and likely you stopped just to catch your breath and reflect on how far you've travelled. I travel through life at a donkeys pace, because while stubborn at times, a donkey to me represents hard work, and a willingness to carry even the heaviest of loads on its back through the toughest of terrains. There are no shortcuts, you have to work hard in life and be prepared to journey through the challenges and hardships of jobs, careers, family, friendships, relationships, and even faith. However you choose to journey, however you get to the finish line, persevere and try to enjoy the scenery and appreciate your travels along the way. Remember there are no shortcuts or substitutions for good old fashioned hard work. Have a blessed new week ahead everyone. 🏽#spreadlove #spreadaloha #livealoha #mjsolofamensgrooming #mjsolofa #groomingmentobebettermen #notetoself #inspiration #motivation #dailybread #motivationalspeaker #walkinfaith #faithandfamily #groomingfortheheartandsoul #happinessisachoice #godisgood #countyourblessings #bethankful #wordoftheday #quoteoftheday #dailyquote #inspirationalbarber #alohaspirit #aloha #dadlife #singledad #blessed #manoffaith #faith #letgoandletgod 6d

mjsolofamensgrooming Last day in the Parlor for the week, and looking to close out strong with good fellowship and friendship and aloha spirit with our clients. Just a friendly reminder to love the life you live, to be comfortable in your own skin, dare to be different and unique, and embrace your individuality. Be a big kid, keep life simple, have fun, and don't be scared to fall or fail,...just be resilient, pick yourself up and get back in the game like kids do. Do you, be you, and then go out and share the amazing person that you are with the world (stretchy pants optional!!). Oh, and look both ways before you cross the street! mjsolofamensgrooming I originally shared this post almost 3 years ago, and the advice is still true to this day.
-------
Some of my peers and colleagues may disagree, but this is a philosophy that I live by as a Barber. I will be the first to admit that as a perpetual student of the Trade, I am just an average Barber and no doubt there are many a Barber who can cut circles around me. However, the only person any of us should be in competition with is ourselves, trying to be better than who we were yesterday. Every client that steps into your chair for the first time has had their hair cut somewhere before and circumstances have brought them to you. While their expectations may be of a high standard because of their previous Barber, focus on doing the best job that YOU can do given the parameters of what they have asked for. Will it be the best haircut they've ever had? It may quite possibly be,...and it may not be. But if you tried your best, both in skill and customer service, you can always be proud of your effort and integrity, which goes a lot further to a paying client than just the quality of the haircut. Food for industry thought. 🏽#mjsolofa #mjsolofamensgrooming #groomingmentobebettermen #spreadlove #spreadaloha #mensgrooming #mensfashion #menswear #gentleman #theartofbeingagentleman #faithandfamily #fatherhood #fellowship #motivationalspeaker #inspirationalbarber #shaveparlor #oldschoolbarber #traditionalbarber #tonsorialartist #dadlife #singledad #godisgood #walkinfaith #aloha #alohaspirit #countyourblessings #bethankful #teamsolofa #samoan #aspiretoinspire

mjsolofamensgrooming So many people go to their graves bitter and angry, waiting for an apology they felt was owed to them but which they never received, many times from someone who unknowingly wronged them in some way, or who never thought twice about what happened and kept going on with their own lives. Life is too short to waste precious seconds, minutes, hours, days and in many cases, years, for that "I'm sorry" that will just never come,....so let it go! Free your heart of the anger and bitterness and resentment so that you can live a happier life, because I can guarantee that whoever supposedly owes you that apology has been living their life without any idea that an apology was or still is owed. 🏽#spreadlove #spreadaloha #livealoha #mjsolofamensgrooming #mjsolofa #groomingmentobebettermen #notetoself #inspiration #motivation #dailybread #motivationalspeaker #walkinfaith #faithandfamily #groomingfortheheartandsoul #happinessisachoice #godisgood #countyourblessings #bethankful #wordoftheday #quoteoftheday #dailyquote #inspirationalbarber #alohaspirit #aloha #dadlife #singledad #blessed #manoffaith #faith #letgoandletgod 1w

mjsolofamensgrooming Back to the business of men's grooming today in the Parlor, excited always at the opportunities to build relationships with new clients, strengthen relationships with my colleagues and returning clients, and in the process provide some decent haircuts and beard trims and shaves as a byproduct of the great fellowship that happens within the Parlor's four walls. mjsolofamensgrooming Facebook reminded me of this photo I posted 5 years ago today, of "The Boss" @jordyyjade doing her homework after school at the first Barbershop I worked at. Those were long days for her, because I'd have to go pick her up from elementary school at 3pm, and bring her back to the shop where she'd have to wait until I got done with work at 6pm. She never complained, she'd stop her homework to sweep the hair or fold the towels, and all the while she knew it was just something that we just had to do. I always felt bad for her on those long days, but it was the sacrifice we had to make with me being a single Dad and not having anyone to lean on back then to help me with her. She and I have since been blessed with our own Barbershop for almost four years and her days of coming into work are long behind her as my work schedule is now based around my days with her. Quality of living as a Barber isn't always measured in dollars and cents, but more importantly it is measured in the quality of time you get to spend with your loved ones. My colleagues work as much or as little as they want, because I insist that they be available to their family's first....for that is time none of us will ever get back. Thank you @jordyyjade for being so patient and supportive and encouraging during our journey together, Daddy is so proud of you and I love and appreciate you! 🏽#mjsolofa #mjsolofamensgrooming #groomingmentobebettermen #spreadlove #spreadaloha #mensgrooming #mensfashion #menswear #gentleman #theartofbeingagentleman #faithandfamily #fatherhood #fellowship #motivationalspeaker #inspirationalbarber #shaveparlor #oldschoolbarber #traditionalbarber #tonsorialartist #dadlife #singledad #godisgood #walkinfaith #aloha #alohaspirit #countyourblessings #bethankful #teamsolofa #samoan #aspiretoinspire 1w

mjsolofamensgrooming Life's journey is like navigating a set of monkey bars. Each rung represents a period or chapter in our lives that we must touch & experience on our way to the next rung, and we have to let go of one to get to the other. As little kids, Monkey Bars are hard to navigate for the first few times. We need our parents to boost us up, hold us & bare our weight, praising us the whole time for the job we did. We're encouraged not to hold onto the same rung too long or we'll grow weak & consume all our energy. We're encouraged not to be scared to let go with one hand so as to swing forward and grab the next rung. "Keep moving, you have to let go, reach and grab the next one, you can do it!!" are the words we often heard. The same advice holds true for our life's journeys. In order for us to grow into better versions of ourselves, we have to keep moving forward & letting go of past rungs (a failed marriage, an unhealthy relationship, the loss of a loved one, a dead end job, bad investments, fallout with friends and family, etc). There is no joy, excitement or reward in holding on too long & you'll eventually expend so much wasted energy that you'll let go and fall short of the journey. These were all things you had to experience in life, but only for a short period. They'll make you better & stronger but will by no means define who you are today or tomorrow, and you'll better appreciate the things/people that will replace them in the future. Today I pray you find the courage & strength to let go of past rungs, & swing forward & grab on to new fulfilling jobs, healthier relationships, a rejuvenated marriage, better friends, smarter financial dealings, stronger faith,...keep moving forward with God holding you up, & be a better version of yourself & enjoy the blessed life that you deserve. "Keep moving, you have to let go, reach and grab the next one, you can do it!!" 🏽 2w
