michelleobama “Reading and writing has become a safe haven for me. This is why I want to pursue a creative writing degree - it has been the most fulfilling thing I’ve chosen to do in life thus far.” —Claudia Owusu, of Columbus, Ohio. Claudia’s story begins in Ghana, West Africa where her mother left her at the age of 5. Reading and writing have become a creative outlet for Claudia and one of the things that have helped her #ReachHigher. Claudia joined the First Lady for the Beating The Odds summit where she had the chance to meet students from across the country who have also faced many hardships throughout their life. These students will always have each other to turn to for support as they step on to campuses across the country this fall. 1w

  •   felizhouston Hello MOST Honorable President and First Lady!!! I hope all is well with the both of you and your beautiful daughters as well as your families! My name is Feliciã Houston, I just wanted to thank the both of you for beginning the "Beating The Odds" (Reach Higher) movement! I am a student at Cedar Valley College and also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Zeta Omicron (The Vp of Leadership) here in Lancaster, Texas! I just came back from my first trip at Texas Region in Denton (UNT); I just wanted to personally thank you both for all that you do and for bringing awareness to the importance of education! I am a young women and mother that is beating the odds as well! Please know and never forget that all you do has impacted my life for the better which has allowed me to be better and do better for my five children! I wanted to share this poem with you so you can understand my appreciation for you two and all that you do!
"Why Me" I use to ask God, "Why Me"???" born into disadvantages, not really understanding.... No mother, no father, correction... they were there, they really just didn't care. Both, leaving me in the care of others; A women that I would soon grow to love as if she was my mother. A man that would provide and protect me, lead, guide, and direct me, in the right direction. My God sent angels, definitely two of my life's biggest blessings! There with them for 5 years, not knowing that those would be the best years! At the age of 12, my mother was released from prison. Little did I know, following her would lead my life in the wrong direction. But who could blame me for wanting my mother??? 1w
  •   felizhouston I was tired of being talked about for being less fortunate than others. After all, she did promise me that things would be better!! Those letters were nothing but lies, when she got out she suddenly changed like the weather. In the year of 2002, I was forced to stop going to middle school. My mother had given birth to a baby girl, with whom I would soon share my world!! She was a miracle baby, God had favored her GREATLY!!! Her system was full of heroin and crack cocaine, hearing the doctors explain, I thought would surely get my mother to change. The facts only remained the same. I just couldn't understand how I went from being an all A honor student, to my life being ruined, BY MY MOTHER! A child raising a child... I remember reading the back of the enfamil can, trying to understand, how many scoops to put in, her bottle. Many days of darkness in a house with no food, running water or lights, certainly caused me to focus on the more important things in life. At the age of 14, my mother signed for me to marry a man that was 10 years older than me. I was abused mentally, physically, and emotionally; which caused me to have very low self-esteem. I just wanted to die, I hated my life! Tears fell uncontrollably from my eyes, so many thoughts of suicide. So many days of walking in the rain and snow, praying to God, asking him to show me which way to go. Life only got worse for me, I became a widow at the age of 16, then later sentenced to 3 years in prison when I was 18. After giving birth to my daughter with my foot handcuffed to a bed and spending 16 months of my life confined in Seg, I understood that God had a plan with purpose for me. All of these things were predestined to be... The devil thought he had won, not knowing that my life had really just begun. Created for greatness, specifically one of God's chosen ones! I used to ask God, "why me"?? Oh, but now I clearly see!! -Felicia L. Houston
I am truly out to beat the odds and help others that have gone through the same, similar or even worse things than I have!! I am now a full time college student with a 4.0 GPA!! YOU ARE APPRECIATED!! @michelleobama 1w

One day he realized that he didn't want to be sitting on his parents porch at 21 years old like the other kids in the neighborhood, he needed to aim higher.
