mdpny We learn by practice. Whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing living, the principles are the same. One becomes in some area an athlete of God. --Martha Graham. Was a true honor to create this work with a great athlete of the gods, @tilstermonroe . 7h

mdpny As some of you who’ve been with me for a while know, in addition to NYC street work, I've posted a lot of yoga selfies (taken all over the city, as part of IG yoga challenges)…. The selfies are coming back for February (adding one evening post a day)…. and wanted to give a little insight on why:

Challenge: Extending my practice from the yoga room into the streets has taught me a lot about facing fear, and deepened my awareness and connection to myself, it’s not about ego or attention, quite the opposite. As a photographer, it’s added a huge challenge, being both the shooter and the subject, all while trying to make an image that works in telling a story.

Community: There are many worlds on IG outside of our normal interest base. It’s amazing to see people who came for the street work support the yoga and calisthenics work, and people who came from the yoga and street workout world who have supported my street work. None of us are just one thing. It’s cool to see the crossover talents someone has when they break the feed.

Inspiration: I’ve learned a lot from, and been inspired by, many people on IG. I want to give back where I can. The thing I’d heard most when people looked at yoga images was “I could never do that.” If you’d asked me a year ago if I’d ever post photos of me doing yoga on IG I’d tell you you were nuts. But I was inspired to embrace the challenge, and just maybe someone else will be too.

So, thanks for making it through this book of a post, and for having stuck with me (and continuing to through this challenge), even if it’s not your thing. Hopefully you will find value in the parts of myself I choose to share. Namaste. ----------------------------------------------------------Would like to give a big shoutout and thank you to my friend @dirtydav1 for creating this great photo. ----------------------------------------------------------The Feb 1-28 #ExploreYourWilderness challenge will be cool to explore in winter in NYC. Hosted by @TheGivingMom @EwanYoga @Lady_Jacks89, three amazing, inspiring yogis. And sponsored by: @Arthleticwear @Bohemian_Island @Braincandyink @Omshanticlothing @Solrayz_llc

mdpny Tonight I was tagged by my calisthenics brother @chris_kerber to share five non-fitness related facts about myself, so here we go: 1- I'm the oldest of a 7 child family, which I think has definitely contributed a lot to my fierce sense of independence and drive. 2- As a kid I always dreamed of working in radio, and I got that opportunity at the age of 15, after impressing the overnight DJ at the local top 40 station with mixes I'd cut together on two cassette decks. 3- In my late teens I threw raves and produced alternative music shows with my friends' bands. 4- I left home at age 17 and supported myself ever since, living on both coasts of the U.S. before I was twenty five. 5- I often find it easier to express feeling in images than in words. So that's little about me. I'm going to tag @icreatelife_ @misfitbarbie01 and @sigikolbe to share 5 non-fitness related facts about yourself! 3d

mdpny In this city of dreams focus always seems to be the most elusive thing. When you find it, hold onto it tight and treasure it. For with it, your dreams will be made manifest, and without it you will be left with only their fuzzy visions. Goodnight New York, may you dream your hardest dream tonight. 4d

mdpny Juno may have ended up being less exciting a storm than I'd planned on, but it made for a lot of great moments, like exploring the frozen city this evening with Manny (@emptyphoto) and Erik (@erikellingson), who's got the right idea here, it's time for bed! Good night New York. 5d

mdpny Sometimes you have a moment that completely humbles you. Just after braving the cold to catch sunset along the Hudson, I boarded a downtown train thinking how cold and miserable I felt. At the first stop a man about my age boarded, he was blind, disabled, homeless, and wearing very thin clothing. Life just needed to give me a little reminder about gratitude... for so many things I depend on every day, things that are not guaranteed, and that I sometimes take for granted. 'Help those you can however you can' that was the lesson I needed to learn today. 5d

  •   shoshb As a Canadian ---- I have to say "you call that snow!". Enjoy the beauty of the white stuff while it lasts 5d
  •   mdpny @shoshb I hear you! I grew up in the Rocky Mountain West, so this registers more like "it's going to snow tomorrow" more than "blizzard". Still hoping we get a 'real' one before the year is out! 5d
  •   shoshb We had a beautiful snowstorm in Toronto in early Dec- loved it. 5d
  •   cutearaaa Like your photo 5d
  •   slikric83 @mdpny I think it's that it took longer to clean up maybe. My backyard is still covered! 5d
  •   mdpny @cutearaaa thank you! 5d

mdpny Some hear 'blizzard alert' and think caution and hassle, for others of us all we hear is 'adventure awaits'. 6d
