matt_in_trees A freshwater sponge in the genus Spongilla. It comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors, all of which depend on where the colony is growing in the water column as well as how much light it gets. The green coloration of this particular sponge is due to symbiotic algae living within its tissues. #sponge #aquatic #nature #adks #adironacks #kayaking #paddle #freshwater #life #green 1d

  •   tookiebird I'm going to the ADK tomorrow :) yay for nature. Hey I was wondering, do you do this for a living? I am considering changing my degree. 3d
  •   matt_in_trees @tookiebird where are you heading? It depends on what you mean by "living" haha. I make some money as a part time teacher and I write for a native plant nursery. Those pay the bills but I'm poor, which I don't really mind haha. I get to hike a ton and thats all that I care about. I'm currently in a masters program in community ecology so some day I hope to be making a true living studying the natural world :) 3d
  •   tookiebird That's great! Sounds like you are enjoying life which is all anyone can ask for! I haven't been which is why I think I want to change. I was thinking forestry management or natural sciences/conservationist. I really think my true passion is outdoors. So I'm trying to decide before my next semester. 3d
  •   matt_in_trees @tookiebird I couldn't imagine doing anything else haha. In terms of majoring, my recommendation is figure out what tract you want to go. Forestry is more of an economic path that would set you up for resource management. If conservation is your goal then I would recommend biology with a focus on ecology. 3d
  •   dbterrariums Wow, really beautiful! 3d
  •   visitadirondacks cool shot! 3d

matt_in_trees Despite copious rain and chilly weather, spending the last few days kayaking on this beautiful river was an experience I wouldn't trade for anything. #bogriver #adks #adironacks #kayaking #hiking #hikingporn #mountains #river 3d

matt_in_trees Saururus cernuus. A wonderful wetland species that belongs to that primitive family of plants, the
Piperaceae. #plant #wetland #nature #newyork #buffalony #hiking #botany #water

  •   angie__belle Wowsers! Looks like a sparkling snapdragon at first but nope! Very cool :))) 3w
  •   angie__belle Is it carni? 3w
  •   matt_in_trees @angie__belle its actually an orchid :) 3w
  •   angie__belle Got it...too cool 3w
  •   nimblenewt It's invasive where I live on Vancouver Island, beginning to outcompete our native orchids. 3w
  •   matt_in_trees @nimblenewt that is mighty unfortunate :( I wonder if it would do the same over here if we still had a lot of wild orchids? Though I do come across it from time to time in rich forests, I mostly only ever see it in poor soils and young woodlots. If I recall, you have some native epipactus out that way, correct? 3w
  •   nimblenewt We have Epipactis gigantea as a native, and a plethora of rein orchids. Where I see it most is in the habitat of the coral roots and Calypso bulbosa, though it is becoming a weed at work (even through landscape fabric) and in town too, in waste spaces and even the hot compacted areas that also host vetch and broom. Much more versatile than I would have suspected back when I first met it 10 years ago and was thrilled to see an orchid in the forest, even if it was not native. 3w
  •   matt_in_trees @nimblenewt Dang thats a real shame. I must admit, I am a bit bias towards any orchid growing in the wild, native or not haha just will have to keep an eye on this one I suppose! 3w
