mark_knox "Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters."
~ Norman MacLean

  •   mark_knox @marymacdonald2 - I know what you mean. When I was a little boy and my dad and I used to head up there to fish and there's this one big curve where the mountains kind of come into view and more often than not my dad would quote that psalm that says "I will lift mine eyes unto the mountains- from whence does my help come?" He was taking it totally out of context of course but I knew what he meant because to him, as it is with me (and obviously with you) he felt closest to God when he was in the mountains than anywhere else-even his own church. 5mon
  •   mark_knox @tan_fox I would too, definitely. They're actually used to be people that lived up along the river back 150 or so years ago and I think all the time how lucky those folks were. 5mon
  •   marymacdonald2 So right! I really learned my love of the natural world from my dad. Isn't it interesting that both of our dads felt in the world of the Lord when in nature? One of my first stories has this line in it, 'Unto the hills, around do I look up, my longing eyes. O whence for me, shall my salvation come?' Interestingly, the character was singing this, while walking in the Cairngorm Hills (in Scotland). So, in nature. We received quite the gift I think. Much better for me than a minister most at home in the pulpit. So, enjoy the fly fishing. 5mon
  •   swtgapeach28 Little slice of heaven right there Mountainman! I could use a lit little bit of that right now 🌲 5mon

mark_knox One last abbey pic. I miss it already! 6mon
  •   mark_knox @chinupstandtall It's in New Haven, Kentucky. It's been there since 1848. You can do a silent retreat- doesn't matter if you're Catholic or even Christian- and the room and board is no cost except for whatever donation you decide to make. It's 1200 acres of serene beauty. 6mon
  •   chinupstandtall That's amazing! It's so beautiful! 6mon
  •   mark_knox It really is and the monks are awesome. 6mon
  •   mackennalynn Nice 6mon
  •   roselilyrose Looks like a lovely place in which to be silent. How long was the retreat for? It sounds so interesting! 6mon
  •   mark_knox @mackennalynn Thanks! :) 6mon
  •   mark_knox @roselilyrose The retreats run from Friday until Monday and then from Monday until Friday and every other week are "women only" retreats. It's absolutely gorgeous-I took several books to read from all I was there and I was reading on a completely different level because there was nothing distracting me and it was so beautiful where I was sitting. I highly recommend it. :) 6mon
  •   demonesslafreak Lovely !! 6mon
