maplesyrup To see a world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower Hold infinity in the palms of your hand and eternity in an hour.

  •   binkdub One day this fall we woke up in Ottawa and suddenly all the green ginkgo leaves on every tree we passed had all just fallen off overnight, it seemed vey mysterious! Usually they don't fall off until they are yellow, but I think it was just suddenly too cold! @minkwilliams 1mon
  •   binkdub I don't even know if these are ginkgoes now I don't think they are!! Oh well it's a good story. 1mon

maplesyrup To learn the history of Catholic Virgins is to learn the history of colonization. La Virgen de los Remedios was brought to Mexico by the conquistadores.
The Virgin is considered to be “Spanish” and a patroness to them and to the indigenous who adopt Spanish ways. She was proclaimed as the “guardian of the Spanish Army.” The purpose of this was to counter Miguel Hidalgo's use of the Virgin of Guadalupe (which was an image of the Virgin discovered by a Mexican peasant) as a symbol of his independence movement.

  •   bemusedobserver Colonialism at its best! 1mon
  •   maplesyrup @bemusedobserver Indeed, it's interesting to be in a country where it is still so blatant! I find it easier to forget about its history when I am in America. 1mon

maplesyrup The church you see on the top of what looks like a big hill is actually on top of the pyramid Tlachihualtepetl in Cholula, the worlds largest pyramid, which you can see an excavated part of on the bottom.
The Franciscan monks tried placing a cross in the temple on top of the pyramid three times. Each time it was struck by lightening. Finally they razed the temple and using the stones of the pyramid, constructed the church dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies that you see a later version of here. I am standing in the courtyard that contains three alters for sacrifices to Quetzalcoatl.

  •   kauffy Meat stands are so weird hey @maplesyrup In Thailand, Greg and I went on a hike and the guides stopped to get the other couple we were with, some meat. (We're veg) There was this little flag on a rotating device that swooshed the flies off the meat and as soon as it passed, the flies swarmed again. Ick! I don't know why, but the scene has always stayed with me, and your shot reminded me of it. It's quite overwhelming seeing carcasses. 1mon
  •   maplesyrup @kauffy I've seen the exact thing and been equally as turned off. For what it's worth, this one seemed "cleaner" 1mon
