Munro Leaf, The Story of Ferdinand
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A hike today reminded me of the day my mom surprised me with Munro Leaf's book, The Story of Ferdinand. She would read it to me almost daily, and not before long I was able to read it on my own. I think Ferdinand's story appealed to me so much because though just a bull, he was aware of who he was, and he never let that faulter, despite what the other bulls were doing. He was unwaveringly himself, nothing more and nothing less. As a young girl I struggled with my sense of true self, Ferdinand didn't, and for that I admired him. I've always been quite the overthinker. My mind was always in turmoil asking questions like "who are you? What exactly makes you, you? Why are YOU here and what is the point in the greater scheme of things?" Though I still don't have all the answers, with the help of life experiences/choices --both the good and the bad-- I have developed a strong sense of my authentic self, and I do the best to my ability to stay true to it, thus allowing me to discover more about myself and grow as a person everyday. Today was just another reminder to keep doing what I've been doing, because I am ultimately happy with the person I have become. I may be weird, or awkward, I may talk too much, or not enough, my clothes may not be the best, nor my eyebrows, but I am ME and I am okay with that because no matter what there will never be another one of me, and I intend on taking full advantage of that. Remember not to assign yourself or let yourself be assigned to a mold, and (as Iyanla Vanzant would say) don't commit acts of violence against your authentic self by emmulating or comparing yourself to others.As regurgitated or as cliche as it sounds, stay true to yourself.
