  •   vanisayeed @quinn.frankel @olselim never doubted the good intentions #respect but I wonder about @kellywearstler perception of the culture...really how does one define industrialization - a fast internet connection ...an organic farm...a cottage industry and in all honesty we would not have been having this conversation without a certain type of industrialization! So ya go figure how people perceive things!! 1w
  •   jlinldancer To all who replied @quinn.frankel @olselim Regardless of KW's intentions, I still feel that using the word "primitive" to describe another culture is dicey at best. It is never about just the one usage - KW might be the most amazing person in the world and I would still take issue. Words have histories, and in this case the history involves using it against people for negative effect. In colonial times, the French and English (and others) had good INTENTIONS, even believing that they were doing God's work by 'shepherding' and protecting these exotic folks. So yes, I agree. Context is definitely a huge part of meaning, but we don't always get to define those boundaries. And I frankly don't want to define them in a way that erases such important events. 1w
  •   lostinarles @olselim @eagemini As a professional travel writer that is specialized it tribes, traditional cultures and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, I will add with all respect that a) it is definitely not ok in this day and age to use the word "primitive" when describing a fellow human being and b) in this case, we actually really do need to be - or at least I want to be - very politically correct as it is exactly the kind of awareness that needs to be raised in order for us all to find a bit more peace in today's society. I don't doubt for a moment that KW did not mean harm (her genuine willingness to connect is evident in these photos) so all the better reason to be aware that the term is no longer appropriate. Even the most remote tribes that I have covered -say the Surma in Ethiopia - while living in a manner that is similar to that of the Bronze Age, they hold a very, very complex society that is highly regulated within their traditions! Pre-industrialization no longer has anything to do with the term now that our knowledge of what such traditional societies are like has, mercifully, grown. And as @jlinldancer wisely has said, history has - hopefully - evolved to where we are starting to understand that we are #onemankind. 1w
