kb2001 In the spirit of South Bay Scavenger Hunt -- @sbscavengerhunt -- who can guess where this is? I'm open to the official @sbscavengerhunt using it in one of their searches if they want to, too. 2d

kb2001 THE FALL OF 18-200

We all cringe when we read of photographers dropping their nice equipment. I didn’t drop my Nikon D300—I slammed it into the asphalt.

Hear me out before you judge me.

I’m not a pro, but photography is a pretty passionate hobby. I’ve sold some of my work here and there, and I’ve been able to buy some equipment from the proceeds. I bought my camera and all my lenses used, however—I’m not that successful in selling my work at BERGENphotography.com

Long story somewhat shortened: I’m walking across the street to shoot at the beach. Carrying my D300 in my hand with my camera bag on my back, I start to cross the street and notice a car has just turned and is heading my way. I decide to pick up my pace, and the next thing I know I’m stumbling and struggling to get upright, but I can’t recover, and here comes the curb of the center divider straight for my face. My chin crashes into the curb, my shoulder slams into the pavement, my elbow and knee are bloodied and bruised, and my sweet D300 is painfully jammed into my palm as it cracks loudly against the asphalt.

I am not a klutz!

I’m actually very coordinated. I never fall. I don’t even kick table legs with bare toes in the dark. Turns out the doctor does an EKG that afternoon and discovers “PR Syndrome” (I had never heard of it, either). He explained it as “an electrical problem” with my heart that caused me to black out for 1-to-2 seconds, enough to put me horizontal. He made an appointment with a cardiologist whom he wants me to see “ASAP.” My body is gonna heal. I’m not so worried about my heart (although my friends and family are freaked). I’m just sick about my lens. It’s been two days, and I just had enough nerve to look at my equipment. Miraculously, my camera seems to be working. My Nikkor 18-200mm lens on the other hand . . . it’s in several pieces of broken plastic, and I can see bent circuit boards and such gaping from areas that shouldn’t be visible. I can’t afford to replace this workhorse of a lens (think medical bills). I used it for 90% of my shots. I think it’s going to be a while before I make more pictures with my DSLR.

  •   eastonslight Glad you are okay @kb2001. That would crush me to wreck a lens like that, but you can alway replace it. #livetoshootanotherday 3w
  •   kb2001 Aaron, big thanks for the support! And I was just thinking last week how I oughta call you up and go shoot down there! @eastonslight 3w
  •   jamesd3rd Unfortunate about the lens but something like that can be replaced, borrowed or rented. If you had hit our head on the curb, it could have been far more serious. You dodged a serious bullet plus learned something about your heart that was unknown. Good you're OK. 3w
  •   kb2001 Thanks, James!! @jamesd3rd 3w
  •   rsimms9 Hey Kevin I've got a first gen 24-120 AFS VR that I never use. Not quite as versatile as your 18-200 but it's yours if you want it. Just collecting dust in a drawer. 2w
  •   kb2001 Wow! That's awesome, Randy!!! I think I'll take you up on that generous offer. I believe I still have your Lensbaby, too. 😇 @rsimms9 2w
  •   pixelmama Glad you are ok! Ideally feel your pain. I sneak a peek at my trashed 24-70mm 2.8 at least once a week. and she'd another tear. Signed: I am a Klutz! 1w
  •   kb2001 Trina, thank you for commiserating with me on this! @pixelmama 1w
