kateausburn Open-cut coal mines in the Hunter Valley are expanding to be closer than ever before to established towns and villages. This is the case in Bulga where Rio Tinto's Mt Thorley Warkworth (where mining commenced in 1981) is now seeking to expand through endangered woodland and Indigenous cultural sites toward the Bulga village. The village is home to ~350 people and is about 3.5km away from the mine at present. "It's my job or my home and I'm siding with my home." I spent some time today with Paul Harris, a Bulga local who works at the Mt Thorley Warkworth coal mine. Rio Tinto want to expand the mine so close to the village that the state's independent planning body has said "serious consideration" should be given to moving the Bulga village. The community have been fighting to stop the mine's expansion for over five years. The expansion plan has twice been rejected by NSW courts, but late last year Rio Tinto resubmitted an expansion proposal so the community's battle continues. Tomorrow Premier Mike Baird will visit Bulga briefly to see the mine, the village, and to meet some of the locals. 1w
