kamsmith @altonbrown for a great meal and beverage in Boise, look no further than this place, Bar Gernika. The croquetas, Alton, are reason enough to visit Boise... You have to have a croqueta and a solomo sandwich. #ABRoadEatsBoise #boise #idaho #basque #upperleftusa 6d

kamsmith A snippet of the brewer's dinner last night, butter poached Maine lobster bisque and an amber from 12 String Brewing. There were four other courses and beers after this, all of them were too good to take pictures of. @altonbrown #ABRoadEatsSpokane when you all get here check out Central Food and 12 String Brewing. 1w

kamsmith I've driven this rig as my daily for a sum total of a month now. Likes: air suspension, diesel torque (all vehicles of this size should be diesel), fit and finish, toys (radar cruise control, automatic everything, the keyless entry/go and the instrumentation). Dislikes: the seats have zero support, the infotainment system has regular fits of not working and finally, the gear selector is flat out idiotic but all in all, I actually like the vehicle. #jeep #grandcherokee #diesel 2mon

  •   beero509 What happened to the BMW? 2mon
  •   kamsmith @beero509 it was taking a break while we were house sitting. I'm back to driving it now and it feels like a toy compared to the Jeep. 2mon
  •   carcounsel "all vehicles of this size should be diesel" - you sound like me. :) 1mon
  •   kamsmith @carcounsel it makes total sense, I've been saying it for years and finally people have caught on. 1mon
  •   carcounsel That too sounds like me. 1mon

kamsmith My niece Charlotte is the best baby. She thinks I'm pretty cool too. And I like schlepping her around with in the baby bjorn. She just holds on to my fingers or hands and looks around cooing at things. It's pretty great. 2mon

kamsmith How we dine. USDA Prime ribeye. Roasted Brussels sprouts with Rosauers house smoked bacon. Oskar Blues Gubna for cooking. Foundry Vineyards 2010 Artisan Blend for dinner. Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Whisky for dessert. This does not suck. #food #wine #beer #craftbeer #scotch #whisky #dinner 2mon

kamsmith @carcounsel #CarCounselCalledIt and so it begins. 2mon
  •   carcounsel Or is that ends? Thanks for noticing - the gall of pubs drumming up traffic with a "breaking" story. Ugh. I feel partly responsible, but also ignored. Back in 2000 the M brand manager previewed the E46 M3 to a select group of M owners and BMW loyalists (yes, I was both for over a decade!) He asked if all wheel drive would be acceptable, and I alone in the room - by then one of the first M5 owners so contrasting that to our 95 M3 - said yes, but only if they planned on continuing to add firepower at the expense of the age old M recipe instead of holding the line on or even reducing power and spending on weight savings. I urged them to consider the latter, but said "do anything but continue down the path you're on." Then as though to spite me came E60M5, E90M3, F10 M5 F80 M3 and finally now some light at the end of the tunnel, although not the light I'd wanted. (At least they took my other suggestions: Dynamic Traction Control, M preference buttons, a back button for iDrive, and the tweaks made to the E46 MCR, ZHP, and ZCP to heart. My theory then and now: if it has / needs staggered tires and invasive traction and stability control to not be a grenade with the pin pulled, you've done something wrong.) 2mon
  •   kamsmith @carcounsel that is an absolutely fascinating story. It's storytelling like this that I want to read in motoring journalism. Not the conjecture based clickbait that inspired this post in the first place. I have no problem with all wheel drive in an M car, I do believe that it should be an option because it isn't necessarily appropriate for every driver. I was wondering if you could clarify for me the fork in the road you referenced during the E46 conversation. Is it the softening of the original M formula? Because I feel as though BMW has abandoned everything their cars stood for back when the first M cars were made. While they did have some more sophisticated technology, their cars were still made for being driven. Now it's apparent that their profit margin is the impetus for everything they do. Pandering to everyone with a fat enough pocket book for each model range rather than concentrating on making each car a genuine pleasure to drive. Now I'd imagine a majority of M cars sold won't be driven by enthusiasts but rather by people who want the proverbial Joneses to know their place in the food chain. BMW has reduced their heritage into a novelty reference they use when it's convenient to give credibility to whatever niche they're trying to fill this week. #enoughalreadyBMW 2mon
  •   carcounsel That is very kind of you. Not since I wrote up the 1 series M for Edmunds has someone reminded me that there is a place - nay NEED - for my style of longform in today's 'journalism'. Your comment comes at a good time, as I am currently planning my coming months. 1mon
  •   carcounsel What I was referring to with the E46 (and to a great extend even the E36 M3 evolution/3.2) was the abandonment of that age old magic recepie of 200hp engine, 300hp suspension, 400hp brakes. The E46 was a motor uber allies car, with everything from the slow rack to the highly staggered tires to the switchable throttle to the M variable diff trying to keep you from wrapping its B pillar around a pole. It also seemed a car that was meant to do better in the hands of the press at Jerez than in the owner's hands on the road - that diff is a perfect example given it makes for self sustaining drifts but not many owners I know like roasting their tires regularly. As BMW moved away from this balance of strengths they in essence ceased being M and started being more AMG. That's my grievance with the current crop of M cars. If the niche filling BMWs were to BMW like the Macan was to Porsche, I'd be using my #enoughalreadyBMW hashtag a lot less often. 1mon

  •   kamsmith @carcounsel thanks for clarifying. That totally makes sense, I can't really think of anything intelligent to add. Your insight to the automotive industry is something that would have kept me subscribed to the big magazines. I think it's funny that the ways we consume media has changed so much in the last five years. I'm excited to see what you have planned in the next few months and I'll gladly read your work. I have to say that it's people like you who I look up to in the auto industry. I would love to start a career in the industry but have no idea how to start. The fact that I'm reticent to move out of the northwest probably doesn't help either. 1mon
