juniperridge Follow our founder @crawlonwetdirt for posts like these - "I started juniper ridge at the farmers markets fifteen years ago. I didn't know anything about business- I was a hiker and a backpacker and just deep into wilderness. I've struggled w depression my whole life, and being out there on the trail, smelling the plants and the dirt and and the air, harvesting mushrooms, backpacking the desert trail, picking huckleberries in the redwoods and on a rainy early fall day and making jam ... those are the things that made me feel whole again. Being out there on the trail isn't just a hobby for me, it's everything, it's what saved me. It's the closest thing I have to church, the thing I can get lost in, where I don't matter anymore and all the anxious ramblings of my mind fade softly into the sounds of the creek I'm sleeping next to ... I didn't know anything about business, I just wanted to make something real and beautiful from the wild. But in the early days it was a total money loser- distilling the wild into perfumes and soaps? No one else in the world does that and for good reason, it's incredibly expensive and difficult. They say you do things for love or money in life, I always do it for love, and I was deep in love and had no choice but to keep going. I kept working away in the dark, struggling on my own as a one person company for the better part of a decade, learning about perfume distillation and the plants, borrowing money from parents, aunts, uncles, endless credit cards, making every classic first-timer mistake and inventing new ones along the way, then bankruptcy, ugh it was a rough time ... Juniper Ridge is flying now and 2014 was the year I let go, stopped worrying about money and started having fun again, falling in love w the wild and my biz all over again. Money is just something that comes and goes in life, and it seems the less I pay attention to it and just focus on the beautiful thing, the more money gets thrown at me. I don't care about anything anymore but having fun, digging deep into the wild and working w people I respect and love. That's it, that's my biz plan these days, and Im going to do a lot more of the same" 1w

  •   nbcrossings I woke up with a start this morning, realizing one thing missing in your outstanding enterprise. There is no reverence in the moment of taking. There is a snatching. Honoring cones in the smelling, through the shared proceeds, and into the felt experience of every consumer— and more I'm sure. But there is no sacred reverence at the point of taking. And, there should be, each and every time. Permission should be asked; a pause to truly hear, a touch of thanks given, a bowed heart, a holy awe. Once, dying of a brain tumor ( unknown, but since removed) I was kneeling slowly before each plant as I moved along a row of organic squashes. I did what the farmer wanted, manipulating mindlessly on. A part of me was in grayer though, actively in prayer. I heard, out of the blue: "If you would listen to us, it would be the equivalent of freeing the slaves." I feel more is being asked of you. Please embody, even more deeply a new form of reverence for our Commons. We, and our earth, desperately need this new form of ministry. Show us the way. Thank you for your good work- Nancy 4w
