juliawhitten when going into work is the most relaxing part of the day, 1) that says a lot about my day and 2) that says a lot about my job. thankful that after the most stressful/busiest of days, I am paid to spend time in a restful place selling music and making art. even if that art is posters taped onto a window.
you'll just have to stop by to see the hidden gems in the design!!!!!

juliawhitten patiently (impatiently) awaiting my scans to come back from our trip to big bend NP and realizing that this will be the last roll I send off to be developed for a while...because the rest of this semester I'll be the one spending hours in the dark room developing my pictures! I'm so looking forward to coming full circle with photography and understanding every step of the process. it's math. it's chemistry. it's art. I'm so thankful to be able to round out my undergrad career studying something I am most passionate about -- black and white film photography.
this photo was taken with a digital camera and is one of the very few night pictures I've taken. I'm not confident in nighttime pics, mostly because I'm usually shooting in film and don't trust my light math, but with a digital cam in hand, lo and behold, I can take a thousand pictures until I'm satisfied. I like the way this one came out. thanks for the help @ejs_eliza and @mcevans11

juliawhitten 2015 // thinking back on the year….it was quite the ride. I made it all the way down to patagonia in argentina, back up to the sierras in california, and so many places in between. most of the year I spent in transit, living out of my suitcase, always planning for the next move. I spent 6 months of the year on airplane mode, held two jobs, volunteered at a garden, dj-ed on the campus radio, identified trees on tuesdays, took an art class, learned more about national trails, forests, and parks, attended weddings, traipsed around our nation’s capital in the snow, traipsed around my parents' town in the snow, cut the sleeves off my shirts from the heat, cut my hair off, died my hair purple, got a nose ring, attended countless shows and galleries and festivals and markets, hitchhiked, was complimented by a homeless man (recently), made new friends + strengthened existing friendships, and more. but 2015 was a hard year. it was so hard. however i’m not dwelling on those negative things now because they shrouded much of the year and i’m not letting them into 2016. 2015 was a year of discovery and explorations, in all senses of those terms. I’m remembering how the Lord revealed his faithfulness in unexpected ways. the lenses through which I view the world have changed profoundly. so as 2015 ends, I’d like to think that acknowledging those changes is an asset. something else for my toolbox that I can hone for better navigation throughout the new year…and the years to come. \\
the photo? you guessed it, the #johnmuirtrail. carly snapped this pic of me hiking donahue pass in the snow/fog.

juliawhitten it's the twelfth and final day of tuscaloosa!! (I'll actually be in town most of tomorrow but I'm leaving so whatever)
to celebrate we're having a party and we've invited all my favorite guests: rain, hail, wind, and tornadoes.
I've already been to birmingham and back for coffee with my fave @rachel.a.sims & now I'm editing my short film. this still image is a glimpse into what I've been working on.
in just a little while the party will start and how convenient it is that I get to celebrate at work!
but in all seriousness, please pray for the people of tuscaloosa to stay safe and that I'll be safe at work waitin out this storm 🏼️
& thanks for joining me in my #12daysoftuscaloosa !!

juliawhitten on the eleventh day of tuscaloosa I met a dog named gizmo at the arboretum. he was a speedy lil hiker + the cutest pup. he and I discussed the plan of action for finding his owner and also I told him he looked like a little fox. I think he understood everything I said. we found his owner and I went to work. every day is its own little adventure.

juliawhitten on the tenth day of tuscaloosa @jm_kern taught me how to bake bread. you have to mix the ingredients, knead the dough, let it rise, roll it out and roll it up, let it rise again, and then bake it. it takes a long time but it's simple.
kind of like most things in life. I love learning from bread.
I had a day off today so before these two loaves were even a mix of flour and yeast I decided to slow down and cross off a few things from my birmingham bucket list. of course I went to a record store (can't stay away) (charlemagne in five points south) and a library in the forest (thx for suggesting @joweedidntstartthefire and @vwess). I love slow windy rainy days like today and how they balance out the more hectic + stressful ones. thankful to be here in tuscaloosa and can't wait to be back with my whole fam on christmas morning. maybe I'll bake everyone some bread.

juliawhitten I know I know, technically I missed a day. but I'm still awake so it's basically still Saturday right?
on the eighth day of tuscaloosa, I couldn't get out of bed. I really wanted to be productive and clean out my car and read my book before work so I set my alarm for 7. but I didn't get out of bed until 10. now I know some of you wake up later than that every day and don't give it a second thought. but I'm a morning person. when I wake up "late" to me, I find it hard to muster the motivation to do anything productive at all for the remainder of the day. so waking up at 10, even though it didn't really require effort, was hard, because I knew the rest of the day would be.
but sometimes you have three days in a row where you can't get out of bed, and it's okay. today I went to work, edited my short film, wrote a little, read a little, cleaned a little, and laughed and screamed a lot with friends watching the polar opposites of movies and dancing in between.
waking up at ten was worth it for the day that followed. on the eighth day of tuscaloosa I decided to take my own advice and be okay, be at peace, and know every day is its own little story, unique and meaningful just like the next one will be, regardless of when I wake up.

juliawhitten aaaaaaand on the sixth day of tuscaloosa,
virginia left.
she & davie are simply the best for letting me stay at their place.
the past few days with virginia being around have been great. we sure did laugh a lot. I loved drinking (juice) with her and talking about collective naps and the government and music and frank the cat. until next time, @vwess. thanks for everything and merry christmas.

juliawhitten on the 4th day of tuscaloosa I left town and joey weed --yes, THE joey weed, the enigma, the icon, the guru and connoisseur of all things everywhere -- showed me around birmingham. we climbed (drove up) a mountain, ate mexican, toured some villages, listened to justin bieber/the elf soundtrack, and overall were filled with cheer. thanks @joweedidntstartthefire for being a great great great pal
