joycesu “In the world of the dreamer there was solitude: all the exaltations and joys came in the moment of preparation for living. They took place in solitude. But with action came anxiety, and the sense of insuperable effort made to match the dream, and with it came weariness, discouragement, and the flight into solitude again. And then in solitude, in the opium den of remembrance, the possibility of pleasure again.” #AnaisNin 2w

  •   joycesu @sld7531 ALL the time. Actually my first reading of Twilight of the Idols, involved a lot of yelling and swearing at my book. I disagree with a lot of Kierkegaard and Kant and Rand but still manage to find a lot I agree with. And Nietzsche grates my not so inner feminist, but still I love a lot of his passion and ideas. What about you? 2w
  •   joycesu *^ apology for superfluous comma after “Idols.” 2w
  •   joycesu @sld7531 I think it's very important to be challenged and to think critically about what you're consuming. I don't think I can say that I love and agree with any artist/writer/philosopher/musician/etc 100% of the time and I think that's also the sign of a healthy curious and skeptical mind. 2w
  •   sld7531 that's really interesting! I go to a classical school (aka focuses on great literature) and so we read and discuss a lot of ideas that are unique for their time or even our time. Pascal's Pensees was one that had some really unique provoking thoughts, some of which I didn't totally agree with. When reading Kant's and many others work about the Enlightenment, I found I disagreed with many of them when they say to essentially disregard the teaching of others. while I think sometimes that is a good idea to prevent the passing down of bias or a general stalemate of social and scientific progress, (Newton, Copernicus, Kepler all broke away from their current knowledge to make incredible progress in science) it's hard to ignore the advice, expertise, and experiences of people who have done what we are about to do: live life. That irked me as I know of many wise men and women that I have helped me along in life. 2w
  •   sld7531 I agree with you about being an artist and disagreeing with something. If an artist never comes across something he/she disagrees with, I wonder if they are they really being curious enough, exploring the world they live in... I believe you can learn a lot about yourself by pondering what you disagree with and why, as opposed to what you agree with. learning what you disagree with gets to the raw idea behind what you actually agree with in a sense. 2w
  •   joycesu @sld7531 I totally agree with the idea of getting to know why... for everything. But boy do I have a problem with arguments in my head... it gets extremely meta to the point where I could argue why I agree or disagree with anything hahaha. Schrödinger opinions. 😛 2w
  •   sld7531 read this quote today which reminds me of your problem: "be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves." -Rainer Maria Rilke 2w
  •   joycesu @sld7531 Ha, love Rilke. That reminds me of Waking Life's "And on really romantic evenings of self, I go salsa dancing with my confusion.” 2w

joycesu “What, if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: ‘This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more; and there will be nothing new in it, but every pain and every joy and every thought and sigh and everything unutterably small or great in your life will have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence[…]’ Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: ‘You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine?’ If this thought gained possession of you, it would change you as you are, or perhaps crush you.” #Nietzsche 3w

joycesu “Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists... it is real... it is possible... it's yours.” #Rand 3w
