jorgeq "It's been years and years, since I last ate beef. Not necessarily by choice but we Cubans don’t really enjoy it anymore…it taste too much like metal, hahaha" said Elmer, 42, with a slight sense of humor which I failed to grasp at first until he elaborated on the statement.

In Cuba, only the state is allowed to slaughter cattle and sell the meat. Citizens who kill a cow - even if they raised it themselves - can get a 10-year prison sentence (hence the metal taste Elmer mentioned). Anyone who transports or sells a poached animal can get locked up for 8 years. Today beef is found almost exclusively in state-run restaurants catering to tourists and dollar-only markets beyond the reach of most citizens.

This obvioulsy when on to make clear why chicken, pork and goat was the most prevalent type of protein we encountered everywhere, either people selling it alive like Elmer or served deliciously in a meal. #ShotOnMoment #StoryPortrait

  •   kirstenalana Oh wow. Yeah I wondered about that but couldn't get anyone to be that honest with me during our trip. 3h
  •   jorgeq @kirstenalana Yeah, I almost found it like cheating the fact that I'm fluent in Spanish so I was obviously able to connect with people pretty quickly and quite frankly, everyone seemed to be open about anything. Awesome experience without question! 😀 3h

jorgeq There's nothing as beautiful as knowing that regardless of what day it is, you'll almost guaranteed to be treated to gorgeous sunsets to close the day. Thank you Miami. 4d

jorgeq I don't think there was no other place which shows more of Havana's soul or that attracts more locals and tourist than the long 5-mile stretch of coastline called El Malecón. Many Cubans do fishing, others simply sit along the seawall itself taking in the beautiful sunset while the more adventurous ones do a little diving.

When I asked Federico, one of the teens diving, if there’s any other place in Havana where teens tend to go to kinda have fun and just hang with friends, I loved that none of his answers even closely resembled to what a typical teen would answer. Instead, it had a lot more to do with enjoying what you have for free which was standing in this very place, enjoying this epic view. #ourcuba #ShotOnMoment #CreateYourMoments

jorgeq The reality is, I too was guilty of wallowing in all the ruin. The abandoned homes, the crumbling buildings, the overgrown gardens. Unless you chose to drive away from Old Havana, there was no turning away from the decay. It's there. It's everywhere and in spite of it all, I couldn't help sense that the people I met along the way carried themselves with the mentality of "I ain't leaving here no matter what" and that to me takes a special breed of people. #CreateYourMoments #ShotOnMoment 1w

jorgeq Back in the states after 4-days in Cuba while still trying to make sense of such an amazing experience not to mention the stories & photos to compliment such an epic journey. #ShotOnMoment 3w

jorgeq I love showing up to a place thinking it’s going to be one way and having all sorts of preconceptions, and then in even a painful and embarrassing way, being proved wrong. I like that. If you can get a little smarter about the world every day, it’s a win.

Tomorrow I'm embarking on this amazing 4-day trip to Havana, Cuba via a 1hr charter flight from Miami. I'll be off the grid for the time I'm there and quite honest it's not a bad thing especially when there's so much to be taken from a place that finds itself in a position where they welcome those who come while striving to preserve who they are. #OnaBags #WhereONAGoes

jorgeq Pool time it is. Haven't been to Miami in years and while it may seem like there's a lot of vacant spaces to rent for potential business there's also a lot of construction happening with new hotels. #ShotOnMoment 3w
