joolyhart @agrphoto takes a moment on the fourth pitch traverse on #estrellita (5.10b), #elpotrerochico, #mexico. Our last day was the best weather day but the worst day there for many other reasons. As time starts to separate me more and more from those horrible rappelling accidents, I can't help but wonder when I will find the silver lining. #climbing 4d

joolyhart One of my favorite shoots last year was a #cyclocross race in #colorado, where this guy (@weibelt) was competing for the first time and ended up nabbing third place! Although he was slower on the technical uphill and obstacle sections, his road cycling background helped him smoke everyone on the straightaways. Just proves that you never know how good you'll be at something until you try! #cycling 1w

joolyhart Within 6 months of working for @climbingmagazine, we found out that we were getting bought out by the same company that owns @backpackermag. Since my life goal with outdoor journalism had always been to work for #backpacker or #climbing, it was kind of a dream come true. About a year later I found myself on a sweet backcountry ski trip to #Iceland with some of my adventure writing heroes, and to top it off, I had skied less than 5 times prior to this trip! Got to share a tent with this badass little lady @bastonek, who was breastfeeding at the time and showing me day in and day out what it is to be a true badass lady adventurer. Grateful for the many adventures my job has afforded me, and psyched for those to come! 2w

joolyhart I used to think only a few months of my year would be filled with the chaos of nonstop travel, but I'm slowly surrendering to the realization that this chaos IS my life, year-round. And you know what? I'm OK with it. // #chamonix, #france. June 2014. #climbing 2w

joolyhart Wrapping up my last day at the #orshow, psyched to get back to training and #climbing on a regular basis--after another trade show of course! @agrphoto wrapped up a project this past December that was one of those where the grade definitely does NOT represent the difficulty! Here he is on Millipede at #horsepens40 in #alabama. 1mon

joolyhart Headed to #outdoorretailer for a few days of back-to-back-to-back meetings in a huge conference center with recycled air, too many people, and bad food. Thankfully my memories of #elpotrerochico, #mexico, and all the cool trips this job has afforded me will keep me smiling as I sprint from booth to booth. #climbing
Thanks @agrphoto for the photo!

joolyhart Remembering the better times in #elpotrerochico, #mexico. @paulcreme strolls through the canyon with Estrellita and Los Lobos Canyon looming in the background. That place sure was ridiculously beautiful. // December 2014. #climbing 2mon

joolyhart Seeing the bird while you're #climbing is never a good thing. While this was a body recovery mission, we had no fucking clue what horrible, life-changing events lay just a few hours ahead. While rappelling off Estrellita in #elpotrerochico, #mexico, a member of the party directly below us fell about 300 feet from the top of the third rappel. We called an ambulance from where we were on the fourth rappel and knew there was little to do at that point but get ourselves down safely. Fellow climbers with medical training rushed up and tried everything, but the young climber from Arkansas was gone. Several dozen more climbers came up to assist with body recovery, only to be hassled for hours afterward by the Mexican authorities for moving the body. No one can believe two climbers died in two days in separate but similar rappel accidents here, a place where there are only two deaths since it has been developed. Although it is heartbreaking and terrible, I'm impressed and incredibly inspired by the climbing community's ability to rally and come together to help out in every little way possible. Y'all rock. Going home with a heavy but full heart. #rockclimbing 2mon
  •   defrome Julie, any link to more info about either accident? We were just down there and want to check on friends. 2mon
  •   team_smell_bad Thank you for the write up @joolyhart . The second victim will be sorely missed in the Austin climbing community they most recently called home. The ride home from Potrero has been a sad and reflective one. 2mon
  •   juandiego_reyes @hollandmike thinking about you dude, hope you're ok. Send me a message when you can so I know you are. BE SAFE! 2mon

  •   joolyhart @team_smell_bad Would you mind sending me an email (julieh.ellison@gmail.com)? I'd like to write a news story for Climbing about the incidents, but I'd like to get your opinion on if his family would want us to share his name and info. I saw y'all pull out today and can't even imagine how everyone is feeling. Sending love and positive thoughts your way. 2mon
  •   agrphoto @team_smell_bad sending all my positive energy towards your group and community. Let us know if there is anything at all we can do to help. 2mon

joolyhart @agrphoto coils his rope on the top of Yankee Clipper, a 13-pitch 5.10 in #elpotrerochico, #mexico. After a super-experienced climber died yesterday by rapping off the end of the rope, mood here is much more somber and plans have shifted. Stay safe out there friends! #climbing 2mon

joolyhart Red on #redneck. Today was an interesting day of #climbing to say the least. Although @agrphoto and I both quickly dispatched nemesis rigs, I still proceeded to get unnecessarily frustrated that I didn't immediately send two other climbs at my limit. I let myself get mad, pout, and generally be, well, a butt. Thankfully this guy right here pulled me back to reality and reminded me that climbing and being outside is not only fun, but a privilege that not everyone gets to enjoy. Gonna spend the rest of my life trying to make this my #mantra. Thanks, Altie. // #horsepens40, #alabama. December 2014. 2mon
