johncurley We got to meet Karen MacNeil this week, whom you may know as the graceful, elegant, James Beard-award-winning author of "The Wine Bible" and other titles. Or you may know her from PBS, where she won an Emmy for the television series "Wine, Food and Friends." But what you may not know about her is how she got her start. ... She had no leg up or insider's advantage in the industry. Quite the opposite. She ran away from home at age 14 and landed in NYC a few years later with $6 in her pocket. She had to talk her way into getting a room at the Y that first night in the city. .... But by the end of the next day, she had lined up three low-end jobs, one in the mornings, one in the afternoons and one in the evenings. She survived with the help of food stamps, new friends, and her innate tenacity. ... As she was trying to break into the writing world, she pinned nearly 300 letters of rejection on the walls of her apartment. She shopped at thrift stores on the Upper East Side to cultivate a look of refinement even though she had virtually no money for clothes. ... And now here she is, running the Rudd Center for Professional Wine Studies at the Culinary Institute of America in the Napa Valley, among many other activities. She's encouraging and thoughtful, and quite kind to newcomers. ... She achieved her success by being tough, smart and perseverant, qualities she no doubt still possesses, but ones that wouldn't immediately leap to mind when you watch her charming a roomful of strangers. ... Sometimes you meet the most deeply inspiring people in the most unlikely settings. 2w

johncurley here's Wayne. He was buying flowers at a little market near the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland last night. He had quite a look, so I asked if I could take a picture. "Women choose ME," he said. "They like a man who dresses nice and has a little money." The woman at the stand said she'd heard that he had two girlfriends. "I'm a hot shit," he said. "I'm pushing 59, and I have gray hairs like you," he said, pulling off his hat. "I like you." I like you, too, Wayne. Happy Valentine's Day. 3w
