jetharrington When I first dyed my hair purple, people had many ways to describe it. I said I wanted mermaid hair - as someone who craves the sea, salt air, and the sound of waves as my lullaby, mermaid sounded right. Some folks called it unicorn hair, and I could totally get behind that as well. As it's gone darker, I started calling it muppet hair. I think some worried I was being disparaging, but I embrace my muppet-like aspects with my whole heart. As the little hands of summer are slowly pulling the days longer again, I'm ready to return to the lighter shades: less muppet, more unicorn and mermaid. Yesterday this little delight from @kristinamarieking showed up in my mailbox. It's a cookie cutter, to add to the collection we've built over the years. Kristina has recognised and celebrated the unicorn in me, since long before I had purple hair. Thank you, lovey. 🦄 2d

jetharrington Last week: I heard an interview with Irin Carmon - Notorious RBG - on the Call Your Girlfriend podcast; and @kristinamarieking sent me the Medium essay from @elleluna that later became a book - The Crossroads of Should and Must. A couple of days later while wandering through a bookstore, I came across both books. I love the portability of a digital reader. But some books are so gorgeously designed, so rich with images and artwork, they call out to be held in the hand. So help me, I've answered the siren call of books time and again. #noregrets #paperbooks 1w

jetharrington I'm drawn to the lake nearly every day this time of year. It is a place to witness the incremental changes of this slow-moving season: soon this will be a carpet of lily pads, but for now, it is open close to shore and the water birds skate in and out on invisible landing strips. The lake reflects the mutable sky, showing me the same breezes that cause the clouds to shift. Despite the grey, this somehow offers cheer. 2w

jetharrington The rain soaked me through today, and I needed two towels to dry the dog. Still, the lake was beautiful- and not even in a bleak way, like Wyoming in January. It was actually beautiful: mist rising, reedy marsh around the edges, the surface of the lake a Spirograph of circles forming and reforming into each other. I love this lake in all its seasons. 3w

jetharrington I like to write in coffee shops - where people come and go, life gathers 'round, a peal of laughter rises in one corner, a toddler's shriek from another. I enjoy the cup of coffee to be sure, but buying it is akin to paying a bit of rent for this corner of a table in this particular town square. Today we shivered when the door opened, gusts of damp chill settling in our bones. Not so the little one who discarded these boots just inside the door. She sat at a nearby table with a pink and chocolate treat in front of her, swinging her legs in untethered delight. 3w

jetharrington Moss grows everywhere in the forest, tiny green star bursts. Ferns, too: they climb the tree trunks, reaching for scant rays of light. It is fundamentally dark here today - and most days, this time of year. This sight from the weekend, when the sun peeked out briefly, cheers my PNW heart and reminds me to wonder. 4w

jetharrington Savvy, Grover, and me. Once I embraced my true Muppet nature, delightful and unexpected things started to happen. People aren't always sure what to make of me, but then, that's not really new. I like this added colour in my life. 1mon

jetharrington Sunday morning. When the wind is biting sharp, come in for a cuppa and conversation, sink into the comfy chairs by the fire. And then say hello to the homeless woman wearing mismatched slippers and a hospital ID bracelet who is taking some brief shelter from the cold. She doesn't actually want the hot cocoa in front of her, but it gives her a place inside. Slip her a bill if you have some to spare. It's cold out there. 1mon

jetharrington We have a kind-hearted neighbour who grows roses and puts up trains in his yard for his grandkids. Most of the year his looks go unremarked. But in December, his bushy white beard gets noticed. A lot. He takes it all in stride and doesn't seem to mind the pointing, stares, and whispers.
We don't get much snow most years in the lowlands around Seattle. Sometimes not even in the mountains. This year is an El Niño year, though, and there's snow in them thar hills!
Last weekend, our neighbour took his pickup truck into the Cascades and filled it with snow. The kids tunnelled through a huge pile on the grass in his yard, and then he built a snowman at the gate for all to enjoy. Complete with candy canes. It is a bit odd to see a full snowman when all around is grass and bare sidewalk, but the kids are charmed. Cheer points: 1000.

jetharrington Yesterday I took some time to scroll through all of my photos from the year, and I'm so glad I did. There were good things there I might not easily recall without those images. One of my favourite things about Instagram is that people tend to share images here of things they are happy about, things they *want* to remember. The images I captured were of beauty and inspiration, moments that help tell the story of my one precious life. And in 2016, I want to do more of that, with more focus, and share more here. #2015topnine #memories #celebration 1mon
  •   jetharrington To be clear, yesterday I was looking at *all* the photos I took in 2015. Top Nine only looks at the ones I posted to Insta, and picks the ones you liked best. Thank you for the hearts! 1mon
  •   elizabethrosestanton The one in the middle just slays me! 1mon
  •   jetharrington @elizabethrosestanton Thank you! Me, too. We were out Iron Horse Trail with Savvy on a long line. Summer fun! 1mon

jetharrington When your sister-friend pulls the card on game night that represents her obsession, you take a picture for posterity. Even if that happened in April and you didn't post it until December, even if game night devolved to #CaH shortly after that picture was taken. #gamenight #antarctica 1mon
  •   shiploadofwilco5 Was this...our game night??? Gosh we need to plan another one! 1mon

jetharrington I made a new Christmas gnome this year. For a short time, she lived on our tree, soaking up love and magic from our family, before she travelled to a little three-year-old friend who lives far away. The tiny bell in her cap rang with wonder and cheer as I wrapped her in tissue. I hope that tiny bell rang for everyone who handled the box along the way, Polar Express-style. 2mon

  •   jetharrington @austinhafer V cool that you are familiar with the artist. The street art in Brooklyn is awesome. We saw such a range in Athens as well, but never on the ancient buildings, only on contemporary ones. 2mon

jetharrington I don't even know what I was originally looking for when these options popped up. I read through them, snickering, until the last one, when I thought, "Wait, what? ARE there snakes in Hawaii?" #ohgoogle #arethere 7mon

jetharrington I've been listening to Kristina sing the songs from Avenue Q since she was in high school. My last full day in Manhattan with her included a matinee of the show, and it was the perfect thing for the moment. Perfect for now. I couldn't have seen this with anyone else. #fornow #avenueq #xtinajet 7mon
