jerilile Mayans. The only indigenous American society to create a complete written language, the Maya achieved a great level of sophistication in architecture, math, art and astronomy. Among their many accomplishments, the ancient Maya also invented a calendar of remarkable accuracy and complexity.
Maya influence spread from the Yucatan Peninsula to Honduras, Guatemala, and Northern El Salvador to as far away as Central Mexico. Despite the decline of the Classic period and the Spanish colonization of the Americas, the Maya people and their culture never disappeared. Today, the Maya form sizable populations throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and maintain a distinctive set of traditions, customs, and beliefs.

We experienced some of their history on a cultural adventure that educated and enlightened us. On our tour we witnessed the reality that faces the remarkable people as their ancient culture collided and blended with the modern world.
We began our adventure in a small, contemporary Maya community built up around the remains of this ancient settlement and visited one of the small ruins located right in the middle of town. It was amazing that this was just sitting in between the small houses/huts that the locals lived in. A cultural experience I will never forget.

  •   wjbva On a similar note...I always remember a story from my parents took to Mexico City environs and seeing the temple of the sun. The comment that stuck with me was the fact that despite the many wonderous ancient temples and structures unearthed the tour guide pointed to nearby mounds and others more distant and said this (what had been uncovered) was but a fraction of what remained to be uncovered and revealed. He said there weren't enough resources to attempt more excavations...and so the hundreds of mounds remain for future generations. 19h
  •   wjbva Forgot to mention this tour was in the late 80s and they saw the temple of the Sun and Moon 19h
  •   jerilile @wjbva yes, exactly. I bet there are so many more to be uncovered. This one happened to be in the town that the tour guide lived in. He knew so much history behind it. It was amazing to see how the families lived. They make their own jewelry and other items to sell to help pay for food and living expenses. It meant more to me to buy from them knowing that it would help them out. 19h

jerilile The Temple of the Descending God. In the center at the top it shows a carved representation of the Descending God which the Mayan people worshiped. The image is like a child being born with its head down. This image is not only found at Tulum, but throughout Mesoamerica. The frequency of this image throughout several ruin sights indicates that the story of a Descending God was so significant to the Mayans that it was taught throughout the land.
This temple was built in alignment with the morning star, the planet Venus and the sun. At the vernal equinox, the light shines through the temple and illuminates the inner Holy of Holies and shines directly under the Descending God announcing his coming to the earth.
It has been determined that Tulum was occupied during the late Postclassic period around AD 1200. The site continued to be occupied until contact with the Spanish was made in the early 16th century. By the end of the 16th century, the site was abandoned completely. I am so glad I got to experience this in my lifetime, and it will be a memory I will cherish.

jerilile The ancient name of Tulum was Zama, meaning ¨place of the dawning sun¨. How it got this name is obvious as this ancient Mayan city is situated on a cliff which faces east toward the beautiful turquoise waters of the life-giving Caribbean. This is surely one of the most scenically beautiful of all Maya archeological sites.

Tulum was a city of main importance between 1,000-1,600. This was a place for the elite of the Maya world. At first glimpse one might mistake Tulum for an ancient country club, with its beautiful grounds and sweeping views of the sea. If one explores deeper, however, this illusion is disturbed by the presence of a large twenty foot wall that surrounds the site which bespeaks of the need for defense against invaders from both land and the sea. Tulum is one of the first cities that the Spanish Conquistadors encountered in Mexico. It was the only thriving Mayan city they found. Intimidated by its size and grandeur they didn´t stay to visit.

Tulum has a number of interesting structures from the ancient Mayan world. Graceful columns and elegant carvings give one an appreciation for the architectural achievements of the Maya. Some of its main structures are the Temple of the Frescoes, the Castillo pyramid and the Temple of the Diving God. Unique corner masks grace the outside of the Temple of the Frescoes. Inside are fantastic 13th century murals depicting ancient ceremonies. One of the few surviving images of the Mayan goddess of fertility and medicine, Ixchel, can be found here. Red paint still clings to the stucco on the outside of the temple. It is believed that at one time all the buildings in Tulum were painted red.

  •   jerilile @ssmajda That's fantastic! 🏼🏼. There is so much history here. I'm so glad I endured the ferry ride to get there. And she might get to see the huge turtles laying their eggs on the beach, which would be so awesome. I took a lot of pics of the buildings and will be posting more. 🏻 4d

jerilile If you want another good reason to visit Tulum, in the Riviera Maya, Mexico here it is…from May to October it is Turtle Nesting Season! Every night, after the sun comes down, the amazingly huge mother sea turtles amble slowly up the beach, dig their holes and lay their eggs. It’s a truly spectacular sight which can be seen at most sections of Tulum beach. I was just there so didn't get to see that. I guess I will have to go back during that time.

jerilile I usually don't post pics of me, especially after being on a ferry ride from h..., on a red flag water day, yes, I lost my breakfast on that boat, but we arrived to this, a python. I'm usually afraid of snakes, but after that boat ride I just took, (I really thought I was going to end up in the sea, the waves were so high), I had no fear at all. I actually put him around my neck, but I haven't downloaded those photos yet, so pardon my disheveled look, I was happy to see anything on land. @instagood #instagoodmyphoto #ig_energy

jerilile I looked up as we were walking to the beach at the Tiki beach in Grand Cayman and saw this on the branch of a tree above me. It's a Mexican spiny-tailed iguana - Ctenosaura similis.

There are 13 species belonging to the genus Ctenosaura. The Mexican Spiny-tailed Iguana, also known as the Black iguana, is one of the largest and most conspicuous lizards in Central America, ranging from southern Mexico to Panama.
If you look under the chin of most iguanas you will see a large loose flap of skin. This is called the Dewlap. The Dewlap can be moved in or out. The iguana sticks out its dewlap if it wants to show off or warn attackers. The dewlap also has many blood vessels running through the shallow skin. If it is a hot day, the iguana can stick out its dewlap to let heat escape. If it is a cold day, then the iguana can stand in the sun and stick out its dewlap to absorb as much sun rays as possible to warm up it’s body
Most animals have 2 eyes, but an iguana actually has 3 eyes! Their third eye is called the Parietal eye and it is found on the top of the iguana’s head. This eye does not see detail and color like our eyes, but it does see light (photoreceptor). The iguana uses this eye to recognize if it is sitting in sunlight or in the shade. This eye can also detect movement from above, so it could be vital in the early warning that a predator is over head!

jerilile Traveling to the Mayan ruins which is near Othón P. Blanco which is one of the ten subdivisions (municipios) of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It had a 2010 census population of 244,553 persons. Its municipal seat is the city of Chetumal, which also serves as the state capital. After Hurricane Dean in 2007, the government build these little brick houses to replace the houses that were destroyed. The problem with these brick houses is that in the summer, the temperature gets in the 100's Fahrenheit, which makes it impossible to live in them because of the heat and no air circulation. #at_diff #cs_reality #discoverearth #earth_expo #earthslocations #earthpix #easytripfinder #ecletic_earth #globe_travel_ #great_image #greatesttravels #ic_adventure #ic_thecity #ig_planet #igworldbestshots #instasyon #insta_international #instanaturefriends_ #loves_world #places_wow #postcardfromtheworld #travel_captures #tv_travel #worldcaptures #worldclassscapes_ #worldingram #worldplaces #world_shooters #world_specialist #worldtravelphotography 7d
