jassschung Last night, I stood on I-80 during the #BerkeleyProtest in order to fight for the rights of my people, community, and future generations. Though on the one hand I've had positive experience here at Berkeley, this has also been the time when my race has been the most pertinent aspect about me. I've never felt so alone as a person of color on a campus where the black community is lest than 5%. I've never had to fight so hard to prove my self an intellectual being and resist stereotype threats about the Black community. A day has not gone by that I don't question why I am on this campus, and if I truly belong. Though I am privileged in the fact that I have never been a victim of police brutality, doesn't mean that I have the right to stay quite. This isn't a Ferguson problem, this isn't Berkeley Problem, this is an Everyone problem. We all deserve to be able to walk the streets without fear. We all deserve to have a justice system that actually protects us, and one that doesn't not tear down the communities that they are suppose to protect. I take to these streets to protest against police brutality, for those that don't have a voice, and so that my child, who will inevitability be born people of color, will have the right to be free too. I stand in the streets with my hands held high because we don't live in a country where everyone is free. Physically witnessing these protests; feeling these raw emotion as I stood in front of the police line, holding shaking hands in the air, hearing my fellow community members and allies pleading with the police to help us, help the people they are getting paid to protect, begging for answers my eyes have be opened to the wide spectrum of systematic change people are advancing towards in these assemblies because the institutions intended to serve us have become the threat. It's about standing up for what I know to be right. These issues seems to fall on deaf ears, so don't back down until our voices are heard. 1w

  •   breannesm You all should be tremendously proud of yourselves. I was driving home last night and the radio news came on. There was a segment about the protests in Berkeley. It mentioned the fact that although other protestors have returned home protests in berkeley still remain strong. Although we may not be on the same side of the debate i am so proud of you. I commend you for using your voice for positive change when those that surround us are consumed by pop culture and consumerism. I am proud that you are my sister. Protest on!! @jassschung 1w
  •   jassschung Thanks @breannesm That means a lot. Love you sis! 1w

jassschung Being apart of [M] Core this semester and [M]ovement in general had allowed me to grow so much as a dancer and to really come out of my shell. It has allowed me to challenge myself and has push me out of my comfort zone, in a good way of course. It has allowed me to experience all different types of dancers, and to truly appreciate my peers creativity, drive, and aspirations. I'm so blessed to have gave gotten the opportunity to work with such amazing dancers, choreographers, and people, and to have the opportunity to make some amazing friends.
Being a dancer, I've grown to appreciate my abilities, and inabilities. I've be love my body and the skin I'm in, and appreciate that though there are some things I can't do, I am still very able bodied and well. Dance has helped me to battle insecurities, my sadness, and daily frustrations and stress. It has given me an outlet and a way to find my inner Zen. Dancing has allowed me to share my passion when others, and to communicate or tell a story with my body when I can't find the words to express how I feel.
This Thursday and Friday, come join the movement, and watch The [M]ovement in our Fall 2014 Showcase and Zellerbach, so that you too can be apart of the wonderful journey each dancer has been on.
