jamitchell JUST A TOUCH OF GREEN Desserts at Japanese restaurants are tricky. There is not a strong tradition of desserts in Japanese cuisine. But Americans aren’t happy without a nice dessert to finish the meal. Mochi ice cream is the standard solution. But Hinoki and the Bird do it different…and better. This is miso mochi with togarashi. A little sweet, a little savory…all delicious. 5mon

jamitchell FRESH GREENS AND BEANS Hinoki and the Bird is perhaps my favorite “newer” restaurant. It’s not “fusion”; it’s true to its Japanese roots. But the creative use of fresh California ingredients makes for an outstanding and very meal. The yellowtail carpaccio (with avocado, blood orange and fava beans) was one of my favorites. 5mon

jamitchell ROLL GREEN ROLL Our good friend Keiko made me a birthday cake. Well, less of a cake than a tower of Japanese roll cakes. Her baking is organic and made without sugar. It is perfectly sweet and very light. Thanks Keiko! 5mon
