jamienbcnews A popular ice cream store in Gaza City on Wednesday. The small storefront was jammed with people, and young men behind the counter scooped and scooped. "They need anything cold," the store's owner said of his customers during an interview. Many in Gaza City have been without electricity since a power plant was hit last week. The store, like other businesses here, runs off a generator. It reopened for business Tuesday, at the start of the latest ceasefire. 3w

jamienbcnews Day two of a ceasefire that could lead to an end of the recent conflict in Gaza. People left their homes Wednesday and walked along Omar Mukhtar street, a main shopping drag. But few were buying. Money is tight here. Not far from this men's wear store, people lined up at an ATM machine, hoping to draw their salaries. The ceasefire has marked the first time that banks have opened since the start of the ground operation. 3w

jamienbcnews Young member of a fishing family at Gaza City's port. A 72-hour ceasefire began Tuesday, and with it a glimmer of hope. And so life sprang back along the sea, as fishermen tried the water and mended nets damaged over the month. Unlike other, earlier ceasefires, Israeli troops have pulled back to the border, and the other side, at least at the moment, appears willing to talk. 3w

jamienbcnews A three-day ceasefire collapses in Gaza on Friday, only hours after it began. Friday morning saw life return briefly to Gaza City's beach, before more violence pierced the fragile peace. The Israeli military says one of its soldiers is missing in Gaza and feared kidnapped, a potentially explosive development. Fire has been exchanged on both sides, and Gazan families have fled the city's beach. Here, a light moment before the collapse. 4w

jamienbcnews This narrow corridor leads to a building where we found a man clearing out his apartment. There was a gaping hole in the ceiling, but otherwise things looked as he left them. Plastic chairs stacked in the corner of the living room, near a dining table. A dresser, visible through an open door. The man said he poured thirty years of savings into the apartment. "Half the people are tired of Hamas after all of this,” he said. “The other half supports Hamas." Saturday afternoon, Shejaiya, Gaza. 1mon
