isebrand 10 acres and a hydrogen bomb. Built in 1963, the is now the only existing Titan II nuclear ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) launch site in America, Airforce Facility Missile Site 8 (571-7), in Sahuarita, Arizona. It is now, thankfully, the Titan Missile Museum; the #warhead (which was in the conical nose that the USAF called the "re-entry vehicle") is inert, with the site's silo doors opened halfway and a large hole in the re-entry vehicle so passing Russian satellites can verify the missile remains non-threatening. From 1963–1989, this silo was manned by 4-person crews on 24-hour watches, in a state of constant readiness, as was the case with crews at dozens of other nuclear missile silos in the US, in case the order of the President of the United States came down the chain of command authorizing a retaliatory nuclear strike against the USSR. The Titan II carried a 9-megaton warhead which could cause 100% above-ground casualties within a 3.65-mile radius of where it exploded. It was accurate to within about 1 mile. We had about 65 of these warheads but more than 100 Titan II #rockets because they were also used for the space program's Project Gemini. The Titan ICBM program was replaced by the Minuteman missile system which was much more precise and thus used smaller-yield warheads. #titan2 #misslemuseum #coldwar #deterrence #usaf #icbm #strategicaircommand #defcon #hbomb #projectgemini #wargames #firstcontact 4w
  •   isebrand Oops, a clarification is required: the warhead is not inert, it is *removed*!, therefore the missile is inert as a weapon—not to mention that there's no fuel in the rocket, either, of course. (The fuel used by Titan was highly toxic.) 4w
  •   ianlogandesign Not sure that one should like that 4w
  •   isebrand @ianlogandesign It's a sobering place; I think it is extremely important to preserve it. A 20something from Columbia was along with our group, and it was a very eye-opening experience to him—that the US and CCCP were poised to annihilate each other and much of the rest of the world. If you're born much later than about 1980, chances are, you know about as much concerning the Cold War as I do about the latest hit Xbox game. 4w
  •   isebrand Colombia I meant! €#%* autocorrect strikes again! (But it makes a better story perhaps if he'd been a Columbia University student.) 4w

isebrand The Yankees have got George III and the Redcoats on the run! Detail from George Mossman Greenamyer's "New Jersey on Parade" (2002), in the New Jersey Transit area of Pennsylvania Station, #NYC; a whimsical mechanical installation of forged, fabricated, and painted steel celebrating New Jersey, including Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas Day, 1776. The installation's figurines slowly parade carousel-like past the viewer on two tiers, the upper one of which can't be seen in these photos. Other objects in the work include a likeness of the first modern submarine, which was made in Preston. On the Revolutionary Soldiers' boat it reads, "We've nothing to fear when Washington's near!" #newjersey #njtransit #PennStation #americanrevolution #redcoats 4w

isebrand Quite. "Mrs. Lushington" (1774), by John Hamilton Mortimer (1749–1770), at @yalebritishart, which is the largest collection of British art outside of the UK (so, obviously, I love the place). Mary Lushington was, of course, married to The Rev'd Dr. Henry Lushington, vicar of #Eastbourne, clearly, and of #Bexhill, naturally, in the diocese of #Chichester. But then she died. 2mon
