inthelightofthesun I give myself a lot of grief over the type of childhood we are providing our children. (We don't have a backyard or even live in a house, we have no local Steiner playgroups or alternative schools that we can afford, this area is too wealthy and white to give a realistic impression of our greater society, we can't afford all the co-curricular activities we'd love our children to experience etc etc and on and on and on....) but today, as we swam in this glorious blue ocean, under the waterfall and through the spray and above the vibrant green sea grass with our lovely swimming instructor, my children shrieking with glee and excitement and boldly swimming off into the blue, well I didn't feel bad at all. For half an hour I felt they were the luckiest children alive. And I'm pretty certain they'd agree with me. Until I told them we had to home! 24h
  •   bettie_smith I think you are doing just fine...Those beautiful boys are given love and freedom to be themselves and that's all they could ever ask for. I think you are a great mum. 24h
  •   myrtles Um..... Hellllllo. Best backyard there!!! 🏻🏻 23h
  •   amyprior__ Your posts are so gorgeously full of smiling children, fun, games, making, friends, visiting, cuddles, experiences, kinship, love & family! I'm sure the sea is just one of the precious & abundant memories your babes are making xxx 23h
  •   onesheeptown It's all good 🏽 23h
  •   once_vintage_ I think you are providing a marvellous childhood! Money and entitlement cannot provide what you give xx 22h
  •   allitera_ stuff all that & pat yourself on the back for being gorgeous & real!! or move to tassie and escape that crazy Sydney mindset 22h
  •   danniosmond Your boys are so lucky, and what a way to spend the afternoon! You shower them with love and culture and creativity, and better yet, you are actually there, present for all the moments. You are such a great mumma xx 21h
  •   kafomurphy THIS is what life is about. Some days we are way down in the trenches and all the 'fluff' the world tells us kids need.... All they need is loving parents and days like this. Together. You are doing fine mama 20h

inthelightofthesun Help! Parents with shy kids!!! I need your tips! I'm totally unequipped to deal - Wolf and I have never been shy or scared to try new activities, we cruise through life like it's no big deal. Torsten had his first soccerjoeys class today and whilst he loves football and is pretty skilled at it too he was terrified to join in, tears galore, clingy etc and we spent the first half of the class refusing to try. Bribes of stamps and banana bread resulted in four awesome goals but I imagine bribes aren't the ideal motivation for a scared child. I just don't know how to emotionally support this situation?! Any tips most appreciated! 1d
  •   flowerpress One of my guys was the same in his first soccer practice. Just celebrated 10 years of soccer. think whatever keeps him doing it till he starts to enjoy it is fine! 1d
  •   dearolive Oh it's so hard, I always wanted one of those kids who raced off & didn't need me to hold their hand/provide clothing for them ti hurt their face into, but O was so reserved in unfamiliar situations ... just keep going, & join in yourself if you have to. Keep up the conversation about the class & what is expected etc - He'll probably feel comfortable in a couple of weeks xx 1d
  •   libbyg23 Lachie is like that - I've just come to realise that they will do it in their own time, when they are ready. Gently encourage but try not to get too disappointed/frustrated that they won't try - if he's anything like mine, they will dig their heels on further. 1d

inthelightofthesun A tree struck by 🌩 Tor's hammer ️ in a recent storm near a playground we infrequently visit. I had shown Torsten a pic on the Internet a few weeks ago and he remembered when we next went to the park. Their recall is amazing! And yet he still has a tantrum in the middle of the night when he wakes and want to be breastfed and I remind him we stopped that months ago... 1d

inthelightofthesun The brief moment this morning when these two weren't having tired tantrums... They didn't get to sleep til 9.30 last night because they were so busy playing/going crazy/chatting in bed/sneaking into the hallway/sneaking into each other's beds etc etc oh hot summer nights...you suck for parents of smalls 2d

inthelightofthesun A puzzles and cars kinda afternoon. Everyone is loving the s l o w pace of today 6d
  •   inthelightofthesun @ladymmoss ours is next weekend urgh I feel for you! I somewhat think we'll be even more tired though come Saturday 5d
  •   inthelightofthesun @dearolive it's part carefree part completely inefficient and wasted we're all so tired though. A week in hospital was not a great run up to the first week back, is it too early to start counting down til holidays?! 5d
  •   dearolive It's never too early to count down til holidays - & don't forget about mental health days, either! xx 5d
  •   ladymmoss @inthelightofthesun yep it's rough. We've done ok today even with it being a sleepover. My top tips. Wash the uniforms and hang them out first thing Friday arvo - get them folded and popped away Sat morning that way you can forget about them. Get school bags empty and ready. Feed the kids food alllllll weekend long. Not a single child chucked a mental, there was no sugar low nothing. I'm not really used to other kids so I wasn't sure what to expect so I just kept bringing out food. Fruit, carbs, fruit water, lasagna for dinner, your banana bread!!! The kids and I made it this morning to serve their parents for brunch!!!! Ham cheese croissants, that sort of stuff. Mine were out cold at 6 tonight and Mossy and I were down-timing out the front with a glass of wine and chips.? 5d
  •   ladymmoss And just remember it's one weekend out of an entire term. You'll survive xxxx 5d
  •   inthelightofthesun @ladymmoss oh you are SUCH a legend. What a pro! Bet they had the best weekend ever!! I certainly wouldn't mind someone bringing me endless yummy food all weekend so patting myself on the back because I did all your top tips regarding uniforms and lunch boxes etc already but as its only week one I have plenty of weeks to forget and fall down before terms end the one night last week I had a little meltdown and thought fuck it I'll do it all in the morning (lunch boxes, kitchen tidy, laundry etc) Tt woke up with gastro so I was extra extra behind. Learning my lesson - just do it the night before, I'm not a morning person, even when I'm at my best! Sigh. Still can't believe I'm a school mum now. 5d
  •   inthelightofthesun @dearolive yes!! Wish mum's could have mental health days I'll settle for moments I guess. I'm secretly looking forward to keeping him home just to skip drop off/pick up for one day! 5d
  •   ladymmoss Mental health days are the best I live for them xxx you are doing a bang up job already but yes those leave it til the morning days suck balls!!! 4d

inthelightofthesun Spotted, hung in a frame in the school office. I love reading. I remember reading the BFG for the first time in primary school all by myself in my bed, so clearly. I love that even though we may not be able to afford the sort of education that the majority of kids around here are treated to, I can still give my kids this - books, reading time and reading together, and know that it will enrich them. 1w
  •   ginnyandjude @inthelightofthesun I remember reading Matilda when I was about 7 in one night in bed with a torch under the sheets. I don't think I got to sleep til 3am! Have you read Boy about his life as a child? I'll lend it to you if you haven't. 1w
  •   inthelightofthesun Oh I used to love reading under the covers with a torch. My bedroom was directly opposite out toilet and I would sneak a book up my nightie and sit in there and read for hours most nights how good is devouring a book?! @ginnyandjude I haven't read it, I don't think. I'll see if it's on my shelf ️ xx 1w
  •   ginnyandjude It's the best @inthelightofthesun ! One of those rare joys of childhood you just don't make time for as you get older. Boy is great, it's written by Dahl and seems just as fantastical as his books. 1w
  •   missingfillmore We have a little RD museum near my parents home, the kids love it, especially story time. 1w
  •   allitera_ he captured my heart & mind as a kid & snozzcumbers & whizpops make us all laugh together now! 🏼🏼 1w
  •   greenmountainmomma Yes. 1w
  •   partshadefullsun I remember it too :) 1w
  •   eastridg You will all be pleased to know Dahl is still as popular as ever. I know, I repair the books :) 1w
