insufferablevegan Check out this photo that @dylandevei sent me from the @wholefoodsmarket in Huntington Beach. This might be the best worst one yet! 3mon

insufferablevegan Kudos to @robinsveganlife for noticing that @Justins dark chocolate peanut butter cups -- which I've eaten and enjoyed and which have carried a "vegan" declaration on the label -- now say "contains milk." Here you can see a screen grab from their website one minute ago and on the right in a circle is the word "vegan." Justin's has responded to the @robinsveganlife post with some confusing and contradictory answers. The gist of it seems to be that the product has not changed but that because of shared equipment issues they have changed their wording from "may contain milk" to "contains milk." That's seems to me to be a big difference, and I don't see how any product can claim it's both "vegan" and "contains milk." I await a better explanation from Justin's because so far each attempt at explaining things just digs a bigger hole. #vegan ? 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @anitivoni Thanks for calling and posting. 3mon
  •   anitivoni @insufferablevegan you're welcome!! 3mon
  •   fightinganhedonia It has palm fruit too so f***k it 3mon
  •   staciewaleyko Still a little confused why the FDA says "contains traces of milk" is okay and Justin's decided to go with "contains milk". I love supporting companies with vegan options but if it makes my life easier I'm just going to buy products that don't have milk listed as a (possible) allergen. Someone made a really good point earlier. What if they start adding milk to the recipe? It's going to be a harder change to spot since the allergen list is now useless. 3mon
  •   cassiedlr Oh no! I like these too. Thank you for the heads up. 2mon
  •   monster_and_girl Yeah j read that. Its just a weird decision. I'm familiar with "made on equipment shared with" or even "may contain traces of" 1mon

insufferablevegan This is the Farmers Market burrito at Poquito Mas. It changes seasonally but so far has always been vegan. This season it's charred corn, kale and zucchini. I don't really like Poquito Mas but this is pretty good. #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan Well, that's the worst photo ever! It was dark inside the Blue Dog Tavern in Sherman Oaks and here's the result. But I wanted to post a photo from here to let you know that I was pleasantly shocked to learn that there are some items on the menu that are marked "100% VEGAN!" Two salads and this sandwich, "The Q Vegan Special" which is "local vegan multigrain bread layered with hummus, avocado, vine ripe tomatoes, cucumbers and fresh basil." It wasn't anything special but it did the trick. I paid a dollar extra for garlic fries which were okay. There is also vegan chili on the menu and a friendly staff. Perfect for westsiders meeting up with valleyites. #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan This is the special dessert today at Native Foods. It's the "Mint for Mercy" cookie sandwich to benefit Mercy For Animals. A good cause indeed except we're the ones who need mercy because this dessert is DISGUSTING. It's like a cookie filled with toothpaste. I mean, seriously, what is going on @nativefoodscafe? Is anyone tasting this stuff before it's served to the public? Could this entire chain be heading into the toilet any faster? Yikes! #vegan 3mon
  •   absoluteperfectshawn ...its an utter shame that the quality of their food is quickly turning out terribly. I used to rush there for a Reuben or a Chicken Run Ranch. Lean times. What happened? I heard their head chef is a meat eater and is deliberately driving the food into the ground. 3mon
  •   absoluteperfectshawn @larayaz yeah, it looks no bueno. 3mon
  •   s.unhone.y Gross. 3mon
  •   plantbasedfatkid Damn, that sucks! It sounded good too. Thanks for the heads up! 3mon
  •   kmbustos1023 @insufferablevegan what the hell am I looking at!? 3mon
  •   robinsveganlife @nativefoodscafe The people aren't happy! Bring back chef Tanya. 3mon
  •   jessydelp They just opened @nativefoodscafe in Washington DC and I was able to go to their practice opening, and got to order an app, an entree, a side and a dessert (for free) . They still have kinks to work out but the food was pretty good. I hope that it doesn't go down hill like the one where to go to seems to have. 3mon

insufferablevegan Haven't had one of these since I was a kid. I don't even think I've SEEN one of these since I was a kid! It was good. And lasted about a second and a half. #vegan 3mon
  •   southernvegangirl I used to love these!!! 3mon
  •   karenmahseredjian Yuum 3mon
  •   tortadefrijoles Mmmmm...corn syzurp 3mon
  •   westonde At least this vegan. I was looking at some salted planters at the mini mart and they had fuckin gelatin, of all things, on them.... I really don't know wtf gelatin is doing on peanuts. Lol 3mon

insufferablevegan I cooked! (Kind of.) I bought one of those bags of Trader Joe's pizza dough and went to town on it. I used Basiltops vegan pesto, San Marzano diced tomatoes, fresh mushrooms, Nary Dairy's "Roasted Gilroy Garlic" cashew cheese, and Phoney Baloney's new apple fennel coconut bacon which gives it a sausagey taste. It was good! #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan One of my most trusted sources recently tipped me off to the arrival of Veganlicious desserts at Viva La Vegan. I don't know anything about this company -- do you? There's not much to go by on the packaging -- just a mysterious hotmail address! No indication whatsoever of where this company is located -- is that even legal for packaged goods? Anyway, the real news is that while their regular food isn't bad -- see my other photo -- their desserts are AWFUL. I mean, these make the Bites of Luv stuff seem like Vegan Treats. This was one of the worst chocolate chip cookies I have ever had in my life, and it was $3.05! I don't ever eat packaging materials but this is what I'm guessing they taste like. Imagine making cookies out of dust and air, and then using the world's strongest vacuum to remove every molecule of moisture. It's like it was freeze-dried! And the brownie -- also $3.05 -- was worse. It tasted hollow even though it wasn't, and had even less moisture than the moistureless cookie. The baklava -- $4.75 for two pieces -- was a little better than the other two items but not even remotely approaching good. I'm curious if anyone else has tried their stuff. #vegan 3mon
  •   green_tati So glad I didn't buy their stuff over the weekend here in R.C. 3mon
  •   piraffe Tears. 3mon
  •   eugenezevegan Just cause it's vegan... Doesnt mean it's good! 3mon
  •   michysfoods They're based in west lake village. They were sampling the other day and I liked the falafel and hummus. Desserts weren't great. 3mon
  •   tortadefrijoles I like Bites of Love... 3mon
  •   klean_slate Now tell me how you really feel.. 3mon
  •   ceeteevee BAKLAVA! :O 3mon
  •   westonde Ouch!!! 3mon

insufferablevegan There's a new brand at Viva La Vegan in Santa Monica that I haven't seen before: Veganlicious. There's not much info on the packaging about them -- I thought that by law packaged goods sold at stores have to tell you where the company is located? Anyway, they make both desserts and other food, like this hummus, falafel and pita chips that I bought. The first thing I noticed is that they are reasonably priced, which isn't always true about the vegan food I see at that store. The hummus was $5.75 for a huge 15.5 oz container, the falafel was $5.40 for six pieces, and the pita chips were $2.80 for a big tub. The hummus grew on me. Pre-packaged hummus is rarely tasty -- the Haig brand is one of the few good ones that come to mind, and there's lots of good hummus to be found in area restaurants, like at Dr. Sandwich or my favorite, Sunnin. The falafel didn't thrill me but Ms. Insufferable liked it. And the pita chips were a little on the too-thin side. But overall not bad for store bought food. #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan I got the new So Delicious candy corn and pumpkin spice coconut milk ice cream pops as soon as they hit the shelves at the Whole Foods in West LA on Barrington so that I could report back to you people! I first saw the candy corn ones in the IG of @shawnbannon and then soon after @losvegangeles but I hadn't seen them on the Westside till now. I liked the pumpkin ones better. #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan They now have all five flavors of Phoney Baloney's coconut bacon at Viva La Vegan in Santa Monica! I think the candied one is my favorite. #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan I really like the Nary Dairy cashew cheeses. The Roasted Gilroy Garlic one is my favorite. I saw them at the Co-opportunity in Santa Monica for only $7.99. They used to be $9.99. I have to be careful now because I can eat a jar real fast! #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan Here's some ice cream from Scoops Westside. This is Cap'n Crunch and, hiding to the left, salty chocolate. The Cap'n Crunch is a flavor that sounds good but the cereal pieces always get soggy from the ice cream. It's the only mix-in ingredient that ever seems to fail in their ice creams. I got it though because I have learned that it's always best at Scoops to get that day's flavors that are in the top containers rather than the previous day's flavors which they keep underneath, because unfortunately their vegan ice cream looses it's wonderfully creamy texture by the next day. #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan I got this to-go from the Vegan Joint in West LA. They had a bunch of desserts from the vegantiramisu.com people, but then I saw three others that looked different, including this one. I asked and was told that these three were indeed from a different source. I asked where they're from and was told: "They're made by Thai people." The sticker says: "Cookie n Cream Chocolate Cake, organic wheat flour, organic soymilk, organic sugar, cocoa, oil, Joe Joe's." It was terrible. #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan This is the "Chicken Dinner" at the Vegan Joint on National Blvd in West LA. All the menu says is "deep fried with kamut batter." Someone else wanted this and I got to try it. It's not my thing. It didn't taste like gardein so I'm guessing it's some kind of Taiwanese fake meat. And it had a sweet taste to it. Also, I thought it's strange that an unhealthy deep-fried item comes with steamed veggies (which were good). This dish also usually comes with "grilled potatoes" but we asked if we could get garlic fries instead. The garlic fries are a $1 add-on to burgers but they charged us $2 with our dish. Whatevs. The fries were pretty good. But I don't get this item. #vegan 3mon
  •   turtelled Looks like it's trying too hard to be "normal" 3mon
  •   veggiealchemy This is a pretty common entree at the dime a dozen vegan joints. I've seen this same dish, grilled potatoes and all, offered at vegan house, green leaves, and now closed truly vegan. 3mon

insufferablevegan This is the wonton soup at the Vegan Joint in West LA. It's "spinach, wheat flower wonton, (soy) shrimp and garlic." Someone else got this and I tried it. It was good. #vegan 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @veggiealchemy I think it might be my favorite of these Bulan/veSTATION type places. I liked the pho and wonton soup -- that's what made me ask. 3mon
  •   veggiealchemy I've been really hooked on Happy Family in Monterey Park lately. Vegan Chinese is especially hard to find. Of the Thai places, I like Bulan best. Haven't tried veStation yet. 3mon
  •   fish_0ut_0f_water that looks so so good! 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @veggiealchemy I've been to Happy Family a couple of times. What are your favorites there? 3mon
  •   veggiealchemy The crisp fried oyster mushroom, and the blackened shiitakes with water chestnut. Wonton soup is good too. 3mon
  •   stacymichelson @insufferablevegan @veggiealchemy happy veggie had their first location in HB and it was all of my friends and my fave of all the Asian places. Owners were sweet and lemongrass chicken was the popular dish. I haven't been since they moved to redondo though. I imagine its the same.. 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @stacymichelson The owner is so nice! 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @veggiealchemy Thx, I will try those next time! 3mon

insufferablevegan Chow Mein at the Vegan Joint in West LA. (There's also one in Woodland Hills and one on Fountain at Vermont.) It's "flat rice noodles, tofu, broccoli, bean sprout, celery, onion, cauliflower, cabbage and carrot." This was okay. The noodles were greasy -- this is the part where @stacymichelson says, "They're supposed to be greasy!" -- and this dish was just so damn white! Not that color affects taste but... It kinda does! #vegan 3mon
  •   turtelled Yeah it doesn't look great. The cabbage looks like iceberg lettuce, I thought this was a salad. And I love chow mein... 3mon
  •   veganinyourcity This looks boring. Does okay mean boring? 3mon
  •   stacymichelson @insufferablevegan pad see ew is what I say that about, haha., But i do like a greasy chow mein. This dish is weird-- I've never seen a chow mein with wide rice noodles.. and where's the bok choy? I feel like that's key to chow mein. Anyways, In the case of this dish color does let me know how bland this is, and I'm sorry for your loss. More like chow mean 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @stacymichelson hahahahahaha 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @veganinyourcity Sometimes! 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @grass.is.greener That's tough for that area during the week. Flore has breakfast but doesn't open till 11 M-F. Localita/Locali opens at 8 in Hollywood and downtown with their well-known "Badass" breakfast sandwiches but it's mostly a takeout thing with sparse tables. The Vegan Joint at Fountain & Vermont has breakfast all day but doesn't open till 11 M-F. Kitchen Mouse in Highland Park is good and has breakfasty food and opens at 8 Tuesday through Sunday. I see there's a place in Silver Lake on Sunset called Millie's Cafe that opens at 7:30 every day and has a vegan tofu scramble that sounds good but I've never had it. 3mon
  •   grass.is.greener Most helpful. Thank you so much, @insufferablevegan! 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @grass.is.greener Any time. 3mon

insufferablevegan Made my first visit to The Vegan Joint. I know, it took a while, but those are not the kind of menus that appeal to me. It was a decidedly mixed bag. These are the fresh spring rolls with peanut sauce and they were excellent. #vegan 3mon
  •   jvlcasting @insufferablevegan Eh I hate the vegan joint. Glad you found something that tasted good. 3mon
  •   veganfatkid There are definitely some underwhelming spots in LA...this may be one. 3mon
  •   kellybone I too am a fan of these Fresh Rolls ;) 3mon
  •   mrsnikkiv I used to like the one in Woodland Hills a lot, but it's when I was a new vegan and didn't really know any better. 3mon

insufferablevegan I was walking past Safron & Rose, the Persian ice cream place on Westwood Blvd., and decided to go in on a lark to see if they had any non-dairy options. I saw this sign and was shocked. I asked the guy if it was dairy-free and totally unprompted he replies: "It's completely vegan"! I asked if it's the only vegan flavor and he says we usually have two but the other already sold out. Then he tells me they're thinking of starting a separate vegan menu with five flavors! Oh, and it was delicious! A little bit thick like a taffy but a beautiful interesting taste. #vegan 3mon

insufferablevegan I think I'm the Jared of Ike's Place! This is the vegan version of the "Not So Sloppy Ike" and it was a recommendation from my Ike's vegan mentor. It's vegan meatballs, vegan cheese, and BBQ sauce, and to that they added Frank's Red Hot sauce, red onion, banana peppers, lettuce and avocado on Dutch Crunch bread! It was really good and I think I might just let them recommend stuff from now on! #vegan 3mon
  •   whitenebula Where is Ike's place? I've been to the one in SF. Is there another? 3mon
  •   whollyvegan "the Jared of Ike's Place"... Ike's is great! 3mon
  •   insufferablevegan @whitenebula This one is in Westwood Village near UCLA. It opened last week and is their first Southern California location! 3mon
  •   whitenebula Ohhhh, cool! 3mon
  •   melissaislame I love having you come in!!! And I'm so glad you enjoyed it! We actually had someone come in later today who heard about us via your Instagram so thank you! 3mon

  •   insufferablevegan @melissaislame Thx! You are always so helpful and I really appreciate how you always make sure that everything is made correctly! Ms. Insufferable and I really enjoyed our sandwiches today! 3mon
