hernewleaf What an awesome year 2015 has been - finished my masters degree, passed my certification exam, got my first job as an OT, completed my conversion to Judaism, married my best friend, traveled halfway around the world, celebrated friends' marriages, spent precious time with family, and enjoyed about a million smiles and laughs. 2015 was also a tough year as I had to say goodbye to my grandfather, but it was amazing to see my family come together in support of each other. Can't wait to see what the next year will bring! #2015bestnine #bestof2015 1mon

hernewleaf I’ve come to learn that December is often a complicated time of year for Jewish people. For most Jews, Hanukkah is not a very significant holiday, religiously or culturally. Hanukkah is NOT Jewish Christmas, and there is a lot of fear in the community about it becoming overblown, over-commercialized, or misunderstood.

The way I see it is this: regardless of the origins of the holiday, modern Hanukkah is about giving. It’s about family. It’s about tzedakah, or charity. Hanukkah is a time of year that many non-Jews are interested in learning more about Jewish tradition and rituals, and it is a time when we can share so much more than, “It’s not a very important holiday.” So with that I say, bring on the Hanukkah spirit!

Your Hanukkah fun fact for the night: Hanukkah candles are meant to be displayed in a window so that anyone passing by may see them and be reminded of the miracle of Hanukkah.

  •   thecookiebatch Love this! One of my BFFs is a Catholic married to a Jew. It has been fun to see them blend their family traditions and it has been really great for me personally as I learn about the Jewish holidays and traditions--year-round--through the two of them. Great post! 2mon
  •   lattelove Thanks for sharing! Can I ask what is meant by the 'miracle'? Would like to read more about Hanukkah! 2mon
  •   hernewleaf @lattelove When the Jewish people were forced from the temple by the Greeks in Jerusalem, a group of Jews knows as the Maccabees moved in to reclaim the temple. They only had enough oil to light the Temple's menorah for one day, but a miracle happened and it lasted for eight days, long enough to take back the temple. That's why we light candles for eight nights during the Festival of Lights! 2mon
