heidiyounggrasshopper I walk for Ruthie. Ruthie was my Mom. But she became Ruthie once she forgot she was Mom. I often said to people who thought it very tragic that my Mom couldn't remember me anymore that I happily traded my Mom knowing me for my Mom no longer knowing she had Alzheimer's Disease. The day she quietly slipped from the horror of moments of lucidity knowing what she was losing to that place where it was just all gone. I read a quote recently from ‪#‎SethRogen‬ "I think until you see it [Alzheimer's] first hand, it's kind of hard to conceive how brutal it is." It was one of the more poignant things I ever read. So on point.
Ruthie passed in 2012. I've since walked silently with several friends who's loved ones were taken by ‪#‎Alzheimers‬ and when I say I've walked silently it truly is a walk of just being there.... you don't want to say too much lest they be spared some horror you endured but at the same time you need to be there. To help them choose laughing over crying. To choose small joys over the tragedy. Remember them for the amazing person they were and care for them as Alzheimer's strips them down.
Ruthie was an amazing woman. Kind. Patient. Loved to cook. And I will always remember her in the kitchen with a festive apron doing what she loved. My Mom won recipe contests in the 60s, made flaming desserts at dinner parties in the 70s, my favorite meal "Chicken like a Turkey" for every birthday I ever had, Cooking was her thing. I remember little signs of uncooked potatoes in the soup. Stoves not turned on or not turned off. The small foreshadowing that evolved into sitting with her and handing her each ingredient and reading the recipe line by line so she could still make a pie. I remember her sitting and picking blueberries for hours with the kids. I remember her sitting and chopping or some other small task so she could still be in the kitchen and part of what she loved. I remember the small dignities we tried to preserve.
I also remember her wrapping her arms around my neck and sobbing because she was just so scared. Read more and #donate to #ENDSLZ http://act.alz.org/site/TR/Walk2014/?px=5682449&pg=personal&fr_id=7390
