heatherlilleston there is a very different feeling between looking up at a blue sky and looking up at a foggy sky ... even when it is cold out, there is a certain unnameable feeling when you gaze up a blue sky. its mesmerizing like watching a newborn baby do basically anything. for a moment we are reminded that the mind can rest in an emptiness that feels like a fullness at the same time, focused and yet with a panoramic view.
today we are focusing on the buddhist mantra "om mani padme hum". this mantra reminds us that through practice we remove the dirt that is clouding our inner treasure chest of jewels, which in turn clouds our perception of ourself and others.
once we have polished our inner jewel, and the clouds have passed, others in our presence can see their true reflection and are reminded of their potential to overcome negative attributes like pride, jealousy, passion, ignorance, greed and hatred.
chanting this mantra, whether outloud, with a prayer wheel or silently in your mind, is said to remove your internal clouds as well as attract to you others who are doing or have done the same. #mantramonday #yogaforlife @colleensaidman

heatherlilleston paschimottanasana ::: one of my all time favorite poses, and one of the few poses that we practice commonly today that is listed in the hatha yoga pradipika, considered by some to be the first written collection of the physical practices of yoga.
for lots of good advice on how to prepare for this pose, read @colleensaidman 's #focusfriday post.
I write this as I sit in bed on the major kickoff weekend to summer, missing my first class in montauk because my voice is completely gone.
for a yoga teacher, your voice is your major tool. I have showed up for class before under all sorts of circumstances: on crutches, with no sleep, jetlagged, pms, emotionally distraught, you name it, you can still teach a good class ~ but when the voice is gone, well it just isn't possible.
fortunately, there is a good side to everything, and so even though I am gazing out on this beautiful day from bedrest, I am reminded of how healing the silence is. this moment when I am forced to be silent (which for those of you who know me know I like to talk) is a challenge, but its potency is gold.
paschimottanasana, when you drop into it, brings you this great silence. once you have propped yourself up enough and found a good medium in the pose, it has been my experience that you can rest here for a long time. so long, in fact, that you dissolve into a kind of silence, that when finally interrupted, you realize you were in. its that spontaneous kind, like my lost voice, where it takes you, and you simply have no other choice. photo by: @zakbush, my class covered by sweetheart @ashes76

heatherlilleston Swaha ~ the art of getting out of our own way and giving it up to something bigger than ourselves ~ often we reach a point when we have to trust all our efforts and let what unfolds, unfold ~ when we practice the art of #swaha or when we say this mantra, we are letting go of the endless push to get a specific result, and stating to the universe that we trust whatever the outcome may be ~ it is a very liberating statement because it allows us to widen our narrow perspectives on things, to actually receive the fruits of our actions, which could be greater than we could have imagined on our own ~ swaha opens us up to what we may not have known before ~ it widens the stars in the sky ~ and releases the burden of control #mantramonday for more on this special mantra go to @colleensaidman 1w

heatherlilleston it is what you are inwardly that matters. your inner peace and joy you have to earn. it is much more difficult than earning money. no university can teach you to be yourself. the only way to learn is by practice. discard all you are not and go even deeper. you will find that what is left is nothing which the mind can hook on to. you are not even a human being. you just are - a point of awareness, co-extensive with time and space and beyond both, the ultimate cause, itself uncaused. if you ask me "who are you?" my answer would be: "nothing in particular. yet, I am." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj 1w

heatherlilleston after a long car ride to the country for my family reunion, one of the best things I could do is twisting ~ a great way to circulate and detox the body from sitting for hours ~ #parivrittatrikonasana also known as #rotatedtriangle is today's #focusfriday ... read @colleensaidman 's post for more juicy recommendations on this particular twist.
one of my main suggestions is to get the front thigh and hip to reach towards the back leg until you feel the belly hollow out naturally. this means that there is enough length in the waist and spine to twist, massaging the organs and stimulating the digestive system.
as you are moving into the pose, use the top hand to press the thigh and outer hip back. once the belly hollows, lengthen the crown of head forward and reach the top arm up.
when the legs ground back thoroughly, the torso is free to spiral around safely, allowing you to gaze up to the blue sky of possibility

heatherlilleston Yoga Sutra 1.2 Yogas-Citta-Vritti-Nirodhah
Yoga is the restriction of the fluctuations of consciousness ~ Georg Feuerstein translation

I always wondered about this sutra. Was it claiming that the state of yoga is experienced when we actually stop the mind from thinking? Is this something that we want to do? And is it possible?

I have read many translations of this verse, some claiming that the fluctuations end or stop altogether, and some that explain that it isn't that the mind actually stops, but that we cease to identify with the fluctuations, so for the practitioner, the thoughts do appear to stop, or at least recede into the background.
Can you let the thoughts recede into the background? Can you lean so far back into center that you no longer hear the movements of the mind?
Investigate this by leaning far back into the back of your skull, into the support of your shoulder blades, and let the thoughts continue on ahead, until they either stop or become so distant you can no longer hear them.
And then leave a comment and tell me what happened. #mantramonday @colleensaidman

  •   colleensaidman It really does help. A lot of the chatter come from desperation and trying to push ahead. Leaning back is quieter and allows for more listening and less useless chatter. Thanks for the tip 2w
  •   gracelee1022 Remind me to tell you abt birthing and how breath brought me to the center. How I tried to exit the body to escape the pain but it didn't work..bc to exit I slammed against the pain. But to follow the breath (I used ujjayi) to the center, it was peaceful there and I hid from the pain. 2w
  •   deviyogastudio I love this post and teaching. Beautifully translated through your own personal experience. Thank you for sharing this concept. xx 2w

heatherlilleston My friend and beautiful student @carolhan has organized #NewYorkersforNepal to raise money and provide support for those who have lost everything in the recent earthquake.
Please consider making even the smallest donation. We are all on this planet together, and we never know when we will be the ones who need the help of others. Include yourself now in the larger community at hand. Don't wait till you are on the other side.
The death toll is still climbing, at 7,803 right now, with 403 people unaccounted for. This is a community that has, by and large, lost everything; their homes, all of their belongings, and in many cases, their wives, children, husbands, their entire families. Even though we're far away, we can still reach out and help. Please contribute if you can, any amount makes a huge difference.
Link to donate in my bio. 100% of funds will go to AmeriCares, who has a team on the ground in Nepal.
