harlemsfashionrow #WorkFashionWednesday #WFW Her name is synonymous with legendary style, design, and exquisite detail. THEE costume designer to call when a filmmaker needs to tell an authentic story through a characters’ attire and accessories. @RuthECarter, a Class of '82 Hampton University grad, got her start in the theatre and in Santa Fe Opera house in her hometown of Springfield, MA, and she fondly remembers getting her 'big break' as a feature film costume designer from @OfficialSpikeLee on the classic set of School Daze in 1988. Thereafter, she worked on a number of films with the award winning director including Do the Right Thing (1989), Mo' Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), and Malcolm X (1992). Her portfolio today reads like that of a Hollywood A-Lister, with credits in over forty films, including classics like I’m Gonna Get U Sucka, The Five Heartbeats, Jungle Fever, What’s Love Got to Do with It, Sparkle, and most recently known, @BeingMaryJane on BET.
Carter has worked with legends like Steven Spielberg and has dressed bankable leading men from Denzel Washington to Josh Brolin. During her 30+ year film career, Carter has racked up two Oscar nominations & received the #ABFF Career Achievement Award in 2002. She says of her job, "I love many aspects of fashion history. There’s something magical about each period." And you might agree that there's certainly something MAGICAL about her! Curtsy to you Ms. Carter! harlemsfashionrow #TBT #ThrowbackThursday In 2013 HFR was asked by @CocaCola to present the collections of multicultural designers at @ESSENCE festival. This was one of our most incredible experiences to date! A standing room only audience while @KimberlyGoldson, @bethuneman Joseph Bethune, and DeidreJeffries showed their beautiful collections. We look forward to being back on the ESSENCE stage!

harlemsfashionrow #WorkFashionWednesday #WFW Audrey Livinia Smaltz was Harlem-born on June 2, 1937. Growing up in the Harlem River Houses with neighbors like Dr. Alvin Poussaint, Bob Moses and David Scott, Smaltz attended P.S. 46 and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Girls Junior High School. She worked as a model and fashion commentator after graduating in 1955 & later went on to become an art major at the City College of New York.
She became "Miss Transit" on November 25, 1954 in Jet Magazine, modeled for Bloomingdales in her early days & even worked with Lena Horne as a junior fashion executive. Ms. Smaltz would go on to be personal assistant to Eunice Johnson and eventually a commentator and producer of the Ebony Fashion Fair shows. She titillated audiences with her moxie and proved herself the single most unforgettable commentator in the history of the Ebony Fashion Fair. She also served as the fashion editor of Ebony magazine reporting on haute couture and prêt a porter trends from Italy, Paris, Japan and the U. S.
In November 2011, she married her partner of 12 years, 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist Gail Marquis. And their love story is certainly something to swoon over. Her current philanthropic work includes board membership at the Black Fashion Museum, Dress for Success, the Gracie Mansion Conservancy, Fashion Group International, and BRAG!
She's also CEO of Ground Crew, a backstage management company for the fashion industry. Smaltz is known by insiders as the go to person to help get runway shows ready–from dressing models to making sure hair and makeup are whipped to perfection. Her clients include Oscar De La Renta, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Bill Blass, Gucci, J. Crew, Adrienne Vittadini, Vera Wang, and many more. Audrey has also acted as an advocate, mentor and guide to many fashion greats including Patrick Kelly, Stephen Burrows, Scottie Barrie, Naomi Sims & HFR's own Brandice Daniel!
She is the embodiment of First Class Style & Grace, and we are excited to shine the spotlight on her Magic today! Much love to you, Miss Audrey Smaltz #HFRNYC #HFR2016 #iLoveFashion #HarlemsFashionRow #FashioninColor #WorkFashionWednesday #WFW

harlemsfashionrow 20 years ago, our highlightee for #WorkFashionWednesday attended the BRAG annual gala as an intern, while a student at the Univ. of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and also working at GAP. Today, she serves as the Senior VP & General Manager of women's apparel/accessories at @tommyhilfiger & is one of the highest ranked Black executives in fashion. Her name? Shawuan. Johnson.
This #WFW patroness strutted to the top of the fashion industry by merging her sense of style with her savvy business smarts. She says hard work is the cornerstone of her career in fashion & wouldn't change that for anything. What's most admirable about her story is that she's had such a longstanding career in an industry that doesn't represent much for people of color. "I'm encouraged about what's to come in the future for fashion. I'm hopeful, that the young people who are rising up the ranks in fashion, will come after my job." We see Johnson as a light that continues to empower African American in fashion & we are proud to welcome her as our #WFW!! #HFRNYC #HFR2016 #iLoveFashion #HarlemsFashionRow #FashioninColor

harlemsfashionrow @TiffanyReid_ is a NY native and who's love for style & fashion started at a tender age. Both her mother and her grandmother were always the most stylish ladies in their inner circles. Today, that's also the case for Ms Reid and it's why she's our feature for #WorkFashionWednesday!! As the new senior market editor at Cosmopolitan, she joins the magazine from Allure where she worked as a dynamic fashion market editor with years of experience working creatively in the magazine industry.
Reid earned her degree from Temple University in 2009 and landed roles at W Magazine, InStyle, and Allure before she started hanging her hat at Cosmo. She says about her sense of style and love for fashion that “it came natural, self-expression was just easy”. And effortless is EXACTLY how we would describe her. She encourages anyone looking to break into the fashion industry to know their stuff. “Do your research,” she said. “It is important to know the history and what came before you. That is something I am constantly educating myself on." Couldn't have said it better! Curtsy to you, Ms @TiffanyReid_!! #iLoveFashion #WFW #workfashionwednesday #harlemsfashionrow #HFR2015 #HFRNYC
