gail62 Isle of the dead is a graveyard for the penal settlement of port Arthur from 1833 to 1877. Around 1,100 ppl are buried there,convicts were not allowed headstones, and were buried on the lower part of the island. The high ground was for the officials, soldiers, and their families they had headstones. 3w

gail62 Memorial Garden for the 35 people killed in 1996 by gunman Martin Bryant, also wounded 19 others. The building is the shell of the broad arrow cafe where 20 people lost there life. 4w

gail62 Anzac Day, lest we forget.. A relative Leonard Cassidy. Was a pow of the Japanese in WW2. He died on the sandakan death marches, which 2,345 allied prisoners also died.only 6 Australian survived, all of whom escaped. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺 4w

  •   gail62 @jimmydeoliveira So many sad story's from war time, of the six that escaped two died only 4 getting back to Australia, l meet one of the survivors at an opening of a memorial monument for sandakan, people were showing Keith botterill pics of their relatives hoping he would remember them.was so sad. 4w

gail62 The church, it was compulsory that all 1,100 convicts attend church services here every Sunday.Most of the stonework and joinery was crafted by the boys from point puer boys prison. 1mon
