fslmama august 31
who's the mom who give the worst advice?
<-------- this one. :/ so, i told my boy to pick up a gopher. who knew they had teeth that can bite through concrete? obviously, not me. big time mom fail. oops doesn't even come close.
thankfully after the pain subsided and the tears were wiped away we could begin to laugh at the story. the final day in august 2015 will go down in wheeler history as the day seth was bitten by a gopher after flushing him out of his tunnels with a water hose. and ps, it was all mom's fault.
pick it up and put it in the bucket, she said.
gophers have no teeth, she said.
lies. all lies.
grateful for on call nurses and antibiotics, and a boy who is forgiving.

fslmama I'm supposed to be a working mama. Yes, I know I am a work at home mom, but this month I was supposed to be starting a real, 8-5 job outside of the house. That was always "the plan". Get the baby in kindergarten and I would go back to work. I even had the perfect opportunity to do so this year when the boys' school counselor retired. She had been teaching me her job for the last two years when I would go up to volunteer in her office. But that's when photography came into my life.
It was agonizing making the decision to pursue this new found love and talent for documenting moments in others' lives. We were tired of living off one teacher's income, which you know is scraps here in Oklahoma. Don't get my wrong, I am on my knees thankful that God has taught us how to be frugal and not live above our means, but I have to be honest to say the struggle is real tough sometimes.
I can imagine Daryl was a little disappointed when I begged for one year to take a chance to grow my business. The plan we decided on 10 years ago flew out the window on the hopes my love for documenting the everyday would help support us.
This past month was tough business wise. Bookings were slow. Inquiries came and I was passed over. The hurt and doubt started to make me cave. It's so hard not to take this business personally. Did I make the wrong desicion? I was ready to hang it up and head to the want ads.
And then I had a dear friend pray for me. I get teary when I think about our friendship and our talks. I love how she challenges me to keep my eyes and my business eyes on God. After so much uncertainty, I felt peace. I hope to be the same friend to her.
I have so many business lessons to learn. They don't teach you that stuff in graduate school for psychology.
So, who knows if this will be the year of booming business. I'd like to think so. It's what I'm hoping.
But this past week has been amazing. It's actually been huge. Most likely my most successful week yet. So I'll take this momentum and pray it continues. (and ps, thanks to each of you who support my business in different ways. I am grateful.)

fslmama When something is truly amazing, I often can't find the right words to express my feelings. I just know i am so fortunate to have found my church home in @lifechurchtv
I first heard of LC in college when some people i knew from high school were attending. they drove over an hour to attend and i never understood why. they were what i called churchy. i decided then that lifechurch was full of the "jesus freaks" and i wasn't one of them.
i spent most of my college and young adult life running from god despite knowing that was the last thing i should be doing. knowing what i know now, i can look back and realize that was the holy spirit trying to call me back.
i had to laugh when i met daryl eleven years ago and he was attending a lifechurch campus. but hey, the cute boy i like was going, so i went with him. it still makes me teary to think of how much my life has transformed in these past several years.
last night's @lcsisters event was so great. loved sharing it with my bestie who went with me despite not feeling 100%. i love that i was able to connect friends who genuinely care about me and will pray for me and my struggles, and i can do the same for them. big thanks to @lctvmoore for hosting this awesome event and @amygroeschel for sharing your heart and God's truth. Maybe i'm one of those "jesus freaks" after all.

fslmama A mother’s treasure is her daughter and she will love her more than her life same as a daughter loves her mother since the very day she opened her eyes. -unknown
I loved sweet Violet's hospital session. Her grandmother was there to welcome her earth side. These tender moments between mother, daughter, and new baby girl are some of my most favorite I've photographed. Such love to be witness to!

fslmama It was a day filled with working for my favorite couples. I finished working on this wedding and will send it out on Monday. I met a sweet couple to deliver a big ole canvas for them to display at their wedding next month. And I booked a summer 2016 wedding with an awesome couple.
I am so SO honored to play a role in preserving their wedding day memories.
And remember, I'm adding on a FREE engagement session for all couples who book their wedding before the end of August. Visit the link in my profile to learn more and contact me.

fslmama Good morning, my friends both new and old! I've made so many new IG friends lately, so it's the perfect time to join in on #FridayIntroductions and today's #risingtidechallenge!
My name is Allison Wheeler. A few years back I picked up a camera to photograph my boys, and am now fortunate enough to have turned my hobby into a business! I really am drawn to photograph raw, organic moments that happen naturally, whether it's at a wedding or between families. I share my work here on my page and #poetryandprosephotography. You'll also see lot of daily life out in the country with my three boys. Lots of dirt and creatures. Haha!

And just a couple of quick fun facts, I was on Wheel of Fortune in 2002 and won $15k! My 15 minutes of fame. I have a masters degree in counseling. After tons of prayer I chose to pass up a job opportunity at my sons' school this year to pursue building my business. Continuing to pray for guidance!

fslmama babies no more.
so much anticipation going into today. excitement woke each of you before dawn, and only little nervous feelings expressed. waves of worry washed over me, but immense joy soon followed. i'm the lucky one to call you each my boy. raising you has been my best everything. watching you three grow into these precious young men, my favorite thing of all. it hurts my mama's heart that you are no longer my sweaty, chubby little babes, but knowing god has laid out a perfect plan for you makes your growing up bearable. i love you each immensely. happy first day of school.

fslmama It's been a crazy busy day. I finally get on to Instagram and am so thankful for super sweet @taviaredburnphoto for sharing my work this morning as a part of today's #risingtidechallenge. Thanks so much!! Y'all need to head on over to her feed and show her some love. She's not only one of the MOST talented birth photographers in the metro area, but she cares so much about building up the #communityovercompetition ideals in our area and chose to lead our local #tuesdaystogether group.
So continuing in the spirit of sharing some of my favorite local photographers, here's three of my faves.
@keidralejeunephotography is my photo twin. We started in the business at the same time and have developed such a true friendship. We shot our very first wedding together in 2012 as serious newbies, and Ive loved working side by side with her during the dozens of others since.
@teena4 is also one I can call a true friend. We met years ago when our boys were babes. Now I can't take credit for all the skills she's developed, but she was the first person to take my photo classes. I've LOVED watching her grow as a confident artist and taking on sessions of her own. Proud of you!
And finally, @kimberly_walla rocks my socks off! We met at a #clickinmoms walk a couple years back and I've been in love with her work since. You can find one of her awesome images in the CM Voice collection!! Woot woot! Always love getting to hang out with her and be inspired by her creativity.
Tap to check out their work! You don't want to miss out. :)

fslmama The last day of summer vacation.
It's 65 degrees (awesome gift from God!!), there's no mosquitos, and it was the perfect day to visit an alpaca farm.
The couple who own the farm were the perfect hosts. The boys learned so much and enjoyed interacting with these adorable creatures. My middle boy was trying to strike up a deal for one of the babies.
We've had a fantastic summer. Can't believe school starts tomorrow. Gonna miss my fellas!

fslmama One year ago this little boy was born with a terrifying birth defect that needed immediate surgery. I met him when he was a few weeks old when I photographed him and his parents in the NICU. Thankfully he was healed and has been thriving at home since being released.
I was so excited when his mama asked me to photograph him in celebration of his first birthday. No more fitting place to have his session than at the children's hospital that changed his life. Such a miracle boy! And my goodness, he's so darn cute!!

fslmama Spent the early morning hours with this sweet couple documenting some moments before they welcome their baby boy.
Wish I could talk more people into meeting me for a sunrise session. The light is perfect and the weather is cool. And you have the rest of your day ahead of you when we finish. :)

fslmama I met the sweetest little lady today. She was born just after midnight, so she was only hours old when I was asked to come to the hospital to document her precious first moments. I love all the families I get to work with. Capturing these moments fill me with so much joy. 3w

fslmama It's that time of year when I love to try a lot of different recipes for the upcoming school year. Quick dinners, nutritious lunches, and easy, filling breakfasts. The this morning's chocolate banana quinoa bowl topped with strawberries was loved by all. Definitely a keeper. 3w
  •   msmithttu01 That looks amazing!! 3w
  •   michelle.huber Recipe please?? I'm always on the lookout for new ones too. 3w
  •   fslmama @michelle.huber @msmithttu01 so so good! I subbed regular milk for the almond milk and only used the bananas in the quinoa. 9 Ingredients

    1/2 cup quinoa
1 1/4 cup almond milk, divided
    1/2 cup water
    Sea salt
1 banana, 1/2 mashed, 1/2 cut into slices
    2 teaspoons honey
    2 teaspoons cocoa powder
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    Fresh mint
    Directions

Bring quinoa, 1 cup almond milk, water, and 1 dash salt to a boil in a small pot.
Reduce heat to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until all liquid has been absorbed, about 10 minutes. Remove quinoa from stove and transfer to a bowl.
Mix in mashed banana, honey, cocoa powder, and vanilla. Stir until evenly combined. Pour remaining 1/4 cup of almond milk over quinoa, and garnish with banana slices and mint. 3w
  •   michelle.huber Thank you so much for sharing! Was one batch enough for the 4 bowls? Or did you have to double it? 3w
  •   fslmama @michelle.huber I doubled and had a bit leftover. 3w
  •   msmithttu01 Thanks Alison!! 3w
  •   hollyvonlanken oooh I'm going to have to try that! 2w

fslmama I'm not in many photos. I don't really mind it, but when you are the one behind the lens it's a bit difficult to trade places.
It was (and will continue to be!) important to me to get in the frame with each of my boys this summer. Tonight I finished up with this guy.
I will forever cherish these images and the moments spent alone with each of my fellas. #fslmamaandsons
