fansterr Woodstock keychain as my identifier || I rarely shared the not so beautiful moments of China during my time there. Here's one. Taking a 15 hour train ride from Xi'an to Chengdu on a soft sleeper was something I thought would be lots of fun. The train food was terrible. The bathrooms were disgusting. The blankets and mattresses smelled like they hadn't been washed in years. I was not having a good time. But then I wandered into the other carts. The people in the hard sleeper section had no mattresses and no doors; it was open area with three hard sleepers stacked on top of one another. A few more carts down were the hard seats, all filled with people squeezed next to each other with some adults holding children. And the truly unlucky passengers stood or squatted in the open areas. We squeezed our way through the sea of people, inhaling what seemed like carbon dioxide. An experience like this makes you realize how fortunate you are, how big the gap is between the financially rich and poor, and the importance of spending New Year's with family, even if that means standing 15 hours on a train. I've also come to the conclusion that my living standards are a bit higher than the average person. Being a bit OCD/germy makes budget traveling really difficult. But I'm glad I got the opportunity to experience a sleeper train in China. The long ride to Chengdu, home of the world's pandas, is something I'll never forget. Next time, I'll be more prepared. | #西安 #中国 #Xian #China 2mon
  •   mojo_yu Nice! 2mon
  •   angelmyz I took a 23 hour train ride from Chengdu to Da Li on a hard sleeper with a 中铺(middle bed). I had been on these train rides back in elementary school and remembered it to be very fun, jumping across beds and acting like a monkey and all. But that 23 hour train ride last summer was something I'm glad I've done but would never do again for a second time. Since the space between each sleeper is so small, there's no way u can sit or do anything on ur bed . So I basically spent 17 hours on the tiny seat by the windows, moving my legs every 5 min out of the way for carts and people to pass by. Thank god for IPad and predownloaded movies, and my ability to understand Chinese. Eavesdropped every conversation near my area and people watched my entire ride. 2mon

  •   fansterr @meatballmylove 我的天啊!HSR/G-train for us next time. Never tried China's, but I really liked Taiwan's HSR. And yea, those hard sleepers look like a coffin space, so squishy!! 2mon
  •   jaynestarrz I feel you on the OCD Germy aspect trying to travel budget friendly...I feel you all too well. 2mon
  •   benjammin206 Last month I took the 40+ hour hard sleeper from Beijing to Kunming. Actually it was really relaxing, I hadn't slept that well in ages. 2mon
  •   fansterr @benjammin206 晕,you must've been hella exhausted. 2mon
