ericbcutler Great story on BBC.com about nonprofit LuckyIronFish.com. On a Cambodia trip, a doctor saw that iron deficiency impacted the health of half the women & children, so he came up with this fish (lucky symbol in their culture) made of iron that after cooked in water/soup, supplies 75%+ of needed iron. Up to 3.5 billion people suffer from lack of iron.... sometimes it's the simplest concepts that can improve the most lives. 5d

ericbcutler Agree on both unique points. If we want revenge, throwing a 21 year old into our prison system for life sounds like punishment to me. 6d
  •   oe76 Then again he will be a drain on resources, but I respect both POV 6d
  •   ericbcutler @oe76 amazingly enough, with our appeals system it's usually costlier to keep someone on death row than their average life sentence. I always assumed otherwise 6d
  •   oe76 @ericbcutler Christ, me too. What has complicated things has been the refusal of some European corporations to supply the drugs required for lethal injections carried out in the States. 6d

  •   geishacreations Agree. Let's not create a martyr. 6d

ericbcutler fbf to 2012, running late to a meeting & tripped over the gas pump because I am an idiot, shattering my elbow. Only other person at the station pulled up & said, "Mondays, huh?" then drove off. Nola felt my pain. 1w

ericbcutler Why spend so much on a purebred when you could have gotten a free shelter cat that pisses all over your goddamn house and then acts like we're both cool with this situation? 1w

ericbcutler For the 100th anniversary of Metamorphosis, BBC enlisted Benedict Cumberbatch to read this bizarrely amusing Kafka tale. Episode one was just released today, so if you've ever wondered what it's like to wake up as a bug, now's your chance. 2w

ericbcutler However ridiculous this magazine cover is, offering 140k employees a free four-year online education at ASU with 20+ hours work/weeks seems like a positive move by an otherwise soulless corporate beast like Starbucks. 2w
  •   danarel Starbucks has strict rules against visible tattoos. 2w
  •   sweetspotvapors Good deeds typically go unmentioned....as soon as they become public information I become skeptical that they are nothing more than marketing hype. For example some folks want the whole world to know they helped feed the children. Philanthropy should be anonymous, or its just self promotion 2w
  •   sweetspotvapors Also "online degree" doesn't look that impressive on ones resume. I have been watching MiT open courseware for many years now, and despite infinite resped for Leonard Suskind Inhardly think I am a qualified "quantum physicist". Practical application can't be fulfilled online... 2w
  •   ericbcutler @noonesboy @danarel @sweetspotvapors As every step is ultimately calculated in how it will benefit shareholders, there is no doubt that there is a spreadsheet with the short & long term marketing benefits reaped by this employee 'benefit' to Starbucks (and ASU). Additionally this will build an artificial pool of potential candidates for low and mid-level positions within the company, further savings. Nevertheless, if every company around their size created similar programs, I can't imagine we'd be worse off, and I will still occasionally visit them out of convenience, certainly not quality or taste. 2w
  •   sweetspotvapors Education can never hurt...the problem is in defining education. If uts simply gaining a piece of paper to further ones self.promotability then boo....of its a more thorough understanding of the world we live in then yay....sadly that is ip to the individual...and any company requiring a uniform and practicing gross consumerism leaves me little hope for the latter...but that's just the opinion of a grumpy old man 2w
  •   sweetspotvapors Who obviously can't spell for shit.... 2w
  •   kevinypn It cracked my shit up when I saw this cover when this issue came in the mail. 1w
  •   robertbiter Yeop this issue is sitting on my ottoman 1w
