ericbcutler Something to remember when [local sports team] is pushing for a new stadium. 2w
  •   skyy_wauka My they do a great job of increasing taxes 2w
  •   wescrout And an unfortunate direct reference to our stadiums (plural) here in mid-sized Cincinnati. Sigh... 2w
  •   alvarolazo That's do to bad deals and poor development. But there are good stadium deals out there. Look at petco. 2w
  •   ericbcutler @alvarolazo there's no doubt that East Village has improved with Petco, but San Diegans are paying for it. From VoiceofSanDiego.com "When voters OK’d the construction of Petco Park in 1998, boosters of the project promised that new condos, hotels & shops nearby would drum up enough new cash to cover the cost of the ballpark. But a decade after the Padres’ first game there, the city’s spending millions to pay off the stadium. Annually, about $14 million – roughly 8 percent of city tourism taxes – is now being funneled toward Petco Park operations & related bond payments. That’s after the city collects rent & other revenues from the Padres." 2w
  •   alvarolazo So tourism taxes are paying for it right? Same tourism that benefited from the ballpark. I don't think we take into account all the money and jobs created outside downtown. Eventually it will be paid off right? And the city wins aswell as Padres. I mean the development in that area is not even finished. We still have barrio Logan and a little north. Those are jobs and development that will benefit the city and bring in more tax money. Like any business u need to reinvest. The ballpark is an investment and San Diego has def benefited from it. Look at comic con, def a direct result of The development of petco park 2w
  •   ericbcutler @alvarolazo it's a fine line. Padres attendance continues to trend downward probably due to lack of funding for star players (obv San Diego doesn't control that). Could that $14MM/year be better spent on roads, schools, etc? Again I would say Petco is more a best case scenario for a new stadium, a lot of cities are a lot less fortunate and get saddled with 5-10x more debt. If you watch this complete segment (YouTube stadiums John Oliver) he covers a lot of that, including the Chargers. I do not think a new Qualcomm would offer the return that Petco has had, unless Chargers cover a higher percentage of construction which is unlikely. They seem pretty interested in heading to LA. 2w
  •   alvarolazo I have seen the segment and it's clearly one sided. he left out the good stadiums projects like petco. Of course I would love more money for schools and roads but in order for us to get more revenue we need to invest in projects like petco and the convention center. Like I said before, there are good projects and bad projects. Lots of bad deals out there due to bad planning and negotiations. As far as schools go I don't think it's money that's the problem. We spend more per student than anywhere else in the world. Unions and and school districts aswell as a culture in our youth that does not seem to care about school is the problem in my opinion. That's a different discussion altogether. But as far as the chargers, they are def gone. I would be too. SD did not want to invest in them so bye bye. 2w
