earthhourofficial #madeinEarthHour [16 of 60] | Amassing more than 1.5 million supporters across the country, Earth Hour Indonesia leads the way as a year-round, youth led movement to promote green lifestyles. They mobilse people for issues related to public transport, reduction in paper and tissue, reduction in use of plastic, tree planting and energy saving. More than 31 Earth Hour teams across the country have become change-makers for cities, from Banda Aceh to Makassar and all in between. Documentary, film, photography, art and performance are used to engage different sectors of society in their actions, and their tagline #IniAksiku! Mana Aksimu? has become a movement in itself. WWF-Indonesia hosts an annual Earth Hour Schools event (Kumbang) towards the end of the year, where the key organisers from across the cities meet to set the focus for the next year’s Earth Hour activities. On April 22, a social media campaign #Gara2EH (Because of Earth Hour) was established to crowdsource all of the outcomes achieved by the movement in the country. In fact, this campaign inspired #madeinEarthHour!

WWF used Earth Hour 2013 as a platform to collect their pledges! The ground breaking commitments should lead to protection of the Brownsberg Nature Park, sending a message of hope for the biodiversity of the country. The commitments are especially important as small scale mining is recognised as the biggest threat to the three tropical rainforest states by the recently launched Living Guianas report.

earthhourofficial #‎madeinEarthHour‬ [13 of 60] | A massive 565 kg of recyclable waste was collected from citizens by a team representing the city of Satu Mare in WWF-Romania’s edition of Earth Hour’s City Challenge. This coupled with their environmental action plan led to Satu Mare being named the winning city this year.
Each small team from the 13 participating cities implemented an environmental action plan in March. This year, the winning team was led by ACT4U, a youth organisation. They showed great creativity and dedication, conducting 27 activities including recycling workshops, performances, exhibitions, presentations and planting drives for green spaces in Satu Mare.
In the past two years, WWF-Romania has pushed beyond the hour through this local city challenge campaign, inspiring citizen action to impact the local environment. Bistrita won in 2012 and Timişoara took the crown for Romania’s Earth Hour city in 2013.
In the first two years of the competition, 22 tons of recyclable waste was collected in participating cities!

earthhourofficial #madeinEarthHour [12 of 60] | Hong Kong’s skyline creates one of the most spectacular lights out displays from around the world. This year, about 2.8 million local residents and 3,900 organisations celebrated Earth Hour.
At the same time, 320 schools pledged support and were equipped with information about Hong Kong’s Ecological Footprint. WWF Hong-Kong (@wwfhk)
also launched ‘One Earth Mission’, an ambitious campaign that targets ‘clothing’, ‘food’, ‘housing’ and ‘transportation’ consumption that contribute to Hong Kong’s Ecological Footprint. The four-week campaign began with the ‘Ocean Smart’ mission, that aims to stop the consumption of unsustainable seafood and reduce food waste across Hong Kong. In the final week, the mission focused on travelling – people were encouraged to spend some time in nature and discover the natural beauty of Hong Kong’s Country Parks.
Significant changes in government policy have recently occurred which echo WWF’s call for a city-wide lifestyle shift towards sustainability. The Hong Kong government announced an internal dining policy which bans consuming shark fin and bluefin tuna at any official occasions. This follows the removal of shark fin and unsustainable seafood from the dining menus of many public organisations and large corporations!

Dutch ESA astronaut André Kuipers celebrated Earth Hour 2012 from his seat on the International Space Station, about 240 miles above the planet. This photo 'Light infiltration in the Alps' was taken by Kuipers and released during Earth Hour on Saturday 31 March 2012. In 2013, Canadian astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield live-tweeted Earth Hour. Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko sent a video message from space shortly before the lights were turned out by hundreds of millions of people celebrating their commitment to the planet. This year, Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin recorded a message from the International Space Station, reminding us that Earth looks beautiful, but fragile from space. We should all do our part to protect it. Image ESA/NASA

earthhourofficial #madeinEarthHour [8 of 60] | In May, around 40 #EarthHour community ambassadors from #Australia met for Camp Earth Hour, a #climate change workshop on the #GreatBarrierReef’s Heron Island. The organisers were from different parts of the country, taking their involvement from Earth Hour event organisers to all year round climate action champions. This is firefighter Dean McNulty from Queensland, who shared how firefighters are on the front lines of climate change. The workshop built on the “Lights Out for the Reef” campaign from earlier this year, which turned the world's attention to the Great Barrier Reef. Climate scientists, community organisers and locals living on the Great Barrier Reef shared stories with all in attendance, and now all are ready to take their action and build the Earth Hour movement throughout Australia. earthhourofficial #‎madeinEarthHour‬ [7 of 60] In a huge win for conservation in #Paraguay, the government extended its Zero Deforestation Law until 2018. This is aimed at stopping further clearance of the critically threatened #AtlanticForest. The Forest Conversion Moratorium project (FCM) and a step towards the Zero Net Deforestation in Paraguay came after @wwfpy (WWF-Paraguay) used the 2013 #EarthHour platform to mobilise support for the third extension.
For #EarthHour 2014, members of WWF-Paraguay delivered another 20,000 signatures from citizens to authorities to require that the zero deforestation law be enforced. A bike powered concert event in the capitol Asunción also took place on March 29 this year in celebration of this outcome.
