duane_fernandez I get incredibly inspired, very jealous and maybe a little mad whenever I see Doug Menuez's photography. It never ceases to amaze me that a photograph can be that powerful. Doug Menuez is an award-winning photographer whose career over 30 years has ranged from photo journalism to documentary film. It's no surprise that I'm most interested in Doug's Fearless Genius series: A stunning visual history of the Silicon Valley technology boom, in which he was witness to key moments in the careers of Steve Jobs and more than seventy other leading innovators as they created today’s digital world.

It was this photograph of Steve Jobs that captured me. I needed to know more about the person behind the camera. Here's a portion of our interview: "The core of my process is not so much a process as a practice. When I’m shooting ideally I’m able to create a space for myself to disappear into a zen-like state of hyper awareness. I am watching and waiting and if I’m doing it right I get into a zone and moments happen right in front of me. Boom. This starts with humility and being open to my subjects and recognizing that I know nothing really, past experience gets you so far but today can be very different. And every photo that means something to me costs something, maybe a conversation, respect for your subject, or maybe your life."

duane_fernandez In a world where a bankrupt reality television star might actually become the commander-in-chief of the world’s greatest military and head of the sole economic and cultural superpower-the leader of the free world...you just have to stop for a second, turn off the noise and enjoy the finer things in life. Like breakfast fucking tacos. I'm completely baffled that there aren't breakfast taco shops on every corner, maybe if there were the world would be a better place. Then perhaps America can be great, not again, but for the first time.

duane_fernandez Backing up hard drives and stumbled upon this photo from back in the day. I met @stereo13_CBS skateboarding on Larchmont in 1987, I met @picksterone at my little record shop in Tucson, sometime in 2002, and for a night in 2007 our creative paths crossed in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

duane_fernandez The legendary Series @LandRover and Defender has been built continuously in Solihull, UK, for 68 years. On January 29th, as the last Defender was produced at its famous Solihull production facility, our latest project completed her first round of upgrades. With many, many more to go, I'm excited about this project because there will be an assortment of adventures and stories to come. We'll be documenting this journey in short essays, drawings, photos and videos. More soon.

duane_fernandez I'm excited to officially announce my partnership with @Adorama! I get a lot of questions from all types of photographers about the best cameras for entry level shooters, people transitioning into professional work, travel, the best gear, lenses, strobes, light panels, studio equipment, etc. I'm very excited to have a reliable partner that I know will take care of anyone who decides to jump in and buy something new.
I've been working with their team to put together a comprehensive list of my gear and my favorites- cameras and equipment I use for travel, on location or in the studio. If you're interested in what I carry in my bag, you can check out:

The lens featured here is my favorite lens of all time: the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM. It goes with me everywhere and has NEVER let me down. It's a super fast, ultra sharp, all-purpose lens you will keep in your collection forever.

duane_fernandez Spent part of the holiday break roaming the country side in search of a bald eagle. I've only seen two or three out in the wild, and it was always just a glimpse. I heard stories of a handful of eagles sitting, watching, hunting and nesting along the Arkansas River, so I picked up a variety of maps and did some research.
I thought this might be a fun new holiday tradition, so I created an eagle journal, jotted down notes and sketched out some maps. After a few weeks of this, I set out with my trusty camera, not knowing that I had been a little too naive about the whole deal. It turns out, eagles don't just hang out waiting for you to take their portrait.
I spent three hours systematically covering every quadrant of my AO. Having not seen an eagle by this point, not even a trace, my enthusiasm started to wane. The weather started to deteriorate as well; rain and photography don't mix. I decided to look around one more bend before calling it a day. Nothing. I felt like I was on a fool's errand, what was I thinking?
I started to head out of the estuary and make my way back home, and that's when I saw something out of the corner of my eye: a massive silhouette sitting on the highest branch of the biggest tree in the lot. She was about half a mile north, off the path. I jumped out, grabbed my gear and slowly made my way into position. I'm sure she was watching me, but she didn't act like it. She was playing it cool up there, occasionally looking the opposite direction, letting me know she didn't care. I was about 50 feet away and my heart was racing; eagles are absolutely breathtaking and MUCH bigger than I could ever imagine.
I looked through my camera, and just before I was able to get her into focus, she was gone. I was devastated. I watched her fly across the open field, and just as I was about to sob, I saw her bank and land in a tree just on the other side of the meadow. I immediately noticed that this was her home. It was a glorious tree. Her nest was gigantic, something straight out of Narnia. I didn't notice it at first, but on the other side of the nest there was another silhouette, of equal size.

duane_fernandez Form follows function. Kawasaki’s 300-hp, 998cc, Liquid-cooled, 4-stroke in-line four, supercharged Ninja H2R is an engineering masterpiece. I’m grateful I finally got to set my eyes on it, but now I’m curious to know how it’d feel on the track.
Important note: It’s not often that a bike comes with its own official guidelines. Including, but not limited to: [1] The Ninja H2R is a closed-course, riding-use-only model and is not manufactured for use on public roads, streets or highways. All usage of this vehicle should be limited to riding on a closed course. [2] Parts designed specifically for the H2R are for closed- course riding use only and cannot be purchased without proof of H2R ownership (product registration, VIN confirmation, etc.). [3] The exhaust sound level of the H2R at the time of factory shipment is 120 dB/A using Auto Cycle Union (ACU) guidelines. It is the owner’s responsibility to confirm that noise regulations of closed courses permit vehicles reaching this level of exhaust sound. Changes to the exhaust system may alter performance and sound level. [4] As a closed-course, riding-use-only model, specific procedures must be followed when riding and maintaining the H2R. Vehicle Tires, do not replace the tires on the H2R with any other brand and model than those offered as standard equipment - Front: Bridgestone, Racing Battlax V01F Soft. Rear: Bridgestone, Racing Battlax V01R Medium. Kawasaki does not approve Bridgestone Racing Battlax V02F & V02R tires for H2R usage. [5] Tire Warmers: To prevent loss of tire grip, always use tire warmers to heat tires prior to riding the H2R. Cold tires do not provide sufficient grip and may cause loss of vehicle control and/or a crash, which could result in injury or death. [6] Vehicle Storage: When storing the H2R, always use front and rear motorcycle stands that keep both tires off the ground. This will prevent tire deformation and adverse impacts on performance. [7] Vehicle Maintenance, in addition to regular periodic maintenance, service inspections are required every 15 hours of engine operation above 8,000r/min (rpm).

duane_fernandez "I've always been drawn to stories about impossible love -- Anna Karenina, Pride & Prejudice, The Human Stain. I love David Sedaris, Joan Didion and Zadie Smith -- writers who look at the darker corners of life with striking candor. Two books I return to again and again are Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, perhaps because reading about situations that are so foreign to me allow me the space to feel recognition. That which is too similar can feel stifling. Oh, and I like my books voluptuous. I deeply respect economy of language, but I want my books juicy and symphonic, their sentences teeming with words and more words."
