dregs_one Last week my 6th grade students led a workshop for other middle schools on using art to resist police brutality. They did great! I hope I'm inspiring some of the next generation of artists & activists. @5elementssf 18h

dregs_one Deep meditation next to flowing water underneath redwood trees. Exactly the temporary escape I needed from a city that has been overdeveloped & consumed by greed. At least now I can navigate the concrete jungle with a bit more calm in my heart. I just have to promise to myself to make it back to nature more often. 2d

dregs_one Rest in Power to THE KING Shaheed Akbar aka The Jacka. Losing this Bay icon 1 year ago today still hurts. One of my greatest moments as an artist was vibing out to my beats with him in my studio. I'm blessed we got to cross paths. He continues to be dearly missed. 1w

dregs_one Why did I see so many people complaining about the protests on the bridge today? Some even commented, "they are disgracing the legacy of Dr. King" or "MLK didn't give his life for this!" The worst was people responding to #BlackLivesMatter with "That's not MLK's message, he didn't believe in separating people by race!" Ummm.... 😦😦😦 proof we need critical education around race issues; and also shows how the establishment has twisted MLK's legacy by not portraying him as the radical activist he really was. 3w

  •   zenrastah These clowns really have no idea who he was. He had no problem with shutting it down! I wish they hadn't killed him once he started getting more radical. I still have a dream that him and Malcolm would have teamed up. 3w

dregs_one As beautiful as it is to see so many honoring MLK's legacy, it's bothersome to also see how many people are misunderstanding of his beliefs & actions; & even worse to know that today many whose principles are in direct opposition to MLK are using his name for the wrong purposes. Study his life. Read his speeches. Go beyond what we are taught in the textbook. This may sound controversial but one of the biggest myths we are taught about MLK & the Civil Rights movement is that he & a few other "messiahs" were solely responsible for making change. Some are blaming the current state of Black America on a lack of new leaders. The reality is that MLK was one of millions of Americans who took a stand for the rights of oppressed people. Although he played a critical role as a minister, spokesman, & organizer, I think he would agree with me when I say that it was average, everyday people who stood up & made the change. This is what's needed today, more than ever. Everyone can fight & push the struggle in their own way. But I will forever be appreciative of Dr. King for bringing so many folks together. Finally, for all of you out there misusing this man's name & legacy, you will not get away with it, in this life or the next. That includes non-profits who enable the system rather than challenge it, corrupt politicians taking photo ops with children, & especially the representatives & agents of the very same US government that had this man assassinated. His work is not complete, post-racial America is a myth, & MLK's dream is not yet fulfilled. I am absolutely positive that he would want us all to keep going. Thank you, Dr. King. 3w

dregs_one I will never understand why some would rather see white & gray patches on a blank wall than the lines & colors that express the culture of those who surround it. 4w

dregs_one Conversations with my Pops. Today he told me about my great-grandfather who was a janitor at City Hall in Chicago. He raised my dad on the Southside, and even though he was near-illiterate he always pushed my father to get his education. In fact, today I learned that he wanted my dad to be a lawyer. Although that never happened, as I'm preparing to go to law school it seems like my great-grandfather's wishes are being fulfilled. This speaks truth to the indigenous concept of the 7 generations, that our lives are connected to and affected by our ancestors and our offspring. The fact that I'm in this position is the result of centuries of struggle by my ancestors. My struggles will only bring greater success to my unborn children who will one day inherit this legacy. This is a picture of my father at age 18, the first person in his family to go to college. 1mon
