drandallblythe Syracuse, NY, 7.30.15. I call this one "What the fuck, dude?" I was going for coffee with @joledo yesterday when I heard a saxophone playing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"- I looked over and across the street was this dude with a mohawk blowin' away. Dude could rip the sax too, so I got out my camera and a dollar and walked over and put the money in his sax case. The dude said "Thanks!" and kept on playing, and I snapped two photos. Then he noticed me taking pictures, stopped playing, looked at me with this kinda grumpy look (the very second I took this photo, btw), & said "What's up man?" "Just doing a little street photography," I said. "What's up with the tips?" he then asked, pointing at his sax case. I was about to jump a little salty with the dude until I noticed he had a bad eye- I had walked up on him on his blind side, I think, & he didn't even really see me put a dollar in his case. Sometimes you gotta take stock of a situation before you react- RESPOND, don't REACT, if possible. "Dude, I just put a dollar in your case. I ain't gonna do you like that," I said (& I wouldn't have- I ALWAYS tip buskers if I take their photo, & and often do even if I don't have a camera, UNLESS they are playing some of that annoying-ass terrible hippy jam noodle music, in which case I want to do them like John Belushi did the guy with the guitar on the staircase at the toga party in Animal House). "Ah, right on," he said, then we gave each other a dap and I was on my way. I didn't get a good photo of him playing the sax, but I like this one anyways. #leicadluxtyp109 #tipyourlocalbusker 21h

drandallblythe Syracuse, NY, 7.30.15, "Nature Fights Back" #4. The plants had started in a little on this building behind my hotel, but most of the damage here seems to be from rain, snow, and wind. I wanted to go inside, but our tour bus was parked right beside it- if the cops came & I had to jet, it was a little too close to home base for my comfort. This building obviously hasn't had much attention paid to it in a bit- roof is disintegrating, brick is falling to pieces- it's not a new building either, so I'll bet it was constructed pretty sturdily. Leave anything unattended, and the environment will destroy whatever you build in the relative blink of an eye- nature has nothing but time. #impermanence #leica #leicadluxtyp109 1d

drandallblythe Syracuse, NY, 7.30.15, "Nature Fights Back" #2. Syracuse had a lot of buildings with plants growing all over them. This church downtown looked quite beautiful with so much ivy on it, but it really made me wonder about how long it would stand without periodic repointing (by the way, taking out old brick mortar and putting in new is called "repointing" for those of you not in the construction biz). Do they ever clean the ivy off? Does it just die on its own in the winter? I dunno, as I am a Southern man and it doesn't get that cold for long periods of time where I live. Any Yankee brick masons got an answer for me? #leicadluxtyp109 1d
  •   tstags Most ivy are deciduous plants. They'll lose their leaves, fruit, etc in the winter and will push new growth in the spring. The main branching of the ivy stays and just keeps growing 1d
  •   mkianka2 That's awesome man, hope you enjoyed your day off in Cuse. I'm loving your book so far, first book I've read in years and I can't put it down. It's definately making me want to read more and feed my brain. 1d
  •   danielbedford This looks like St Marys Cathedral at Hyde Park Sydney....been so long since venturing out for architecture shoots - used to get the skateboard out and just roam the city after midnight 1d
  •   duncanarmstronghill This reminded me of some beautiful images of manmade structures destroyed in storms or broken apart by trees, listening to Reclamation now @drandallblythe 1d
  •   the_raccoon_up_north they usually leave the ivy on buildings year-round. it'd be too much work to take it all down and put it up again. 1d
  •   thecrownedprinceofpsychedelia Ivy stays all year round unless major construction needs to happen 1d
  •   pixiekemp I remember going past this with my mum!! Amazing building right at the edge of NY City I need to go there again hit the CARNEGEY DELI!! They do amazing burgers 22h

drandallblythe Rockin' a little DJ set at the after show backstage barbecue last night on @sidthe3rd's Casio Trackformer mini-turntable portable DJ rig thingy. Those things are pretty cool- technology is so crazy these days. Sid said "Gimme your camera" so I put it on full auto & handed it to him. Somehow, even on full auto, all the pictures he took of me came out crazy & blurry with light trails- I don't know how he managed that, but it looks cool. #photobysidney #leicadluxtyp109 #djstarscream #wheelsofsteel 2d

drandallblythe Ok, despite the fact that we are both on a long tour, both of us are out here rocking our asses off every night, and both of us are now in full-on CAVE MAN mode, Corey "Ducklips" Taylor and I have discussed our writerly alter-egos and we realize that the book reading portion of our fans might want to get our terrible scribbles on copies of DARK DAYS and/or YOU'RE MAKING ME HATE YOU, sooooooo...... we are gonna do some signings on this run on our "days off", starting this Monday, Aug 3rd at 7pm in Cambridge, MA at..... THE HARVARD BOOKSTORE. Yes, that's right, Mom (because I know you are reading this), I'M GOING TO HARVARD! So Monday at 7 pm, we'll be at Harvard for a BOOK SIGNING. That means we will be signing BOOKS ONLY, not CDs or tshirts or your neighbor's baby or your weed smoking device or whatever. That's why it's called a book signing- we are coming to sign books- OUR BOOKS, not a collection of Penthouse Forum letters or whatever. Why are we doing books only? Well, because the Harvard bookstore said so, and the last book signing we did together in LA lasted THREE SOLID HOURS- Corey just barely made it to his solo show in time that night, because we refuse to turn anyone away. This is not a ticketed event, but to get in you have to have at least one copy of one of our books bought at the Harvard bookstore- why do they have to be bought at the Harvard bookstore? Because the Harvard bookstore is hosting the event and wants to make money, that's why- makes sense to me. You can stop by and get a copy in advance from the Harvard Bookstore (SAVE YOUR RECEIPT), or they will be there for sale that day. See ya Monday at 7pm at Harvard, y'all! This tour is about to go IVY LEAGUE! (Yes, you can get your picture taken with us while we sign your book) #darkdaysyouremakingmehateyoubooktour #twoterribletastesthattastegreattogether #summerslaststandtourfrontmensidegig #DARKDAYS #YOUREMAKINGMEHATEYOU #wegetstupid #leicadluxtyp109 3d

drandallblythe Why do we pay to lose control of our situation? Why are humans attracted to things that scare us? To my knowledge, no other species purposefully endangers itself on a whim. I love roller coasters, and even though I am fully aware that there could be a malfunction with this unnatural steel contraption that could send me flying to my death, I ride them when I have the opportunity. It doesn't make sense, really, when you stop and think about it. I also like jumping out of airplanes, skateboarding downhill really fast, and surfing big waves during hurricane season- all of these things put butterflies in my stomach. I wonder if primitive man got a charge out of hunting really dangerous animals, or walking super-sketchy cliff side trails? Is it buried within our genetic code somewhere, this attraction to fear? Or is all this thrill seeking the result of living in a sanitized, safe and sedated, disconnected-from-life-itself modern society? Who knows? Not me. But I wonder about it. #leicadluxtyp109 3d

drandallblythe As you can see, @willadler is DEADLY SERIOUS about his coffee game. He brought this crazy-ass espresso maker-rig thingy out on this tour, & a milk frother & a hand-cranked coffee bean grinder- it's mad scientist-crazy. He's deep into it- DEEP. You can't even drink regular coffee from catering around him or he will insult you. "Look at you, drinking that bitch-ass coffee juice" he will say, then taunt you with his awesome drink- what an elitist asshole- but he DID make me an awesome cappuccino with the coffee he was making in this picture. Our friend @paulbtbam (Paul, guitarist of Between the Buried and Me & sometimes member of lamb of god) owns a coffee roasting business, @parliamentcoffeeroasters, & sent Willie out with a bunch of small batch roasted beans- COFFEE SPONSOR! It's awesome, & the beans are rad, so thanks Paul & @parliamentcoffeeroasters for the hook up! Check Parliament Roasters out if you want some dope fresh beans- they ship outta Charlotte, NC. #caffeind #deathbeforedecaf #leicadluxtyp109 #parliamentcoffeeroasters #thankspaul 5d

drandallblythe Y'all know I don't talk about my band much here- it's not my thing, this account is for my photography & other creative endeavors- but I must take a moment to speak about something that irked me recently, as I felt it was a bit insulting to our fans & the metal scene that supports my band (especially the females). "What happened was metal chased girls away because what happened was metal aged. Metal got gray, bald and fat."- this generalization was recently made by Mayhem Fest cofounder Kevin Lyman about OUR METAL SCENE- I call BULLSHIT. I wanted to wait until we were on tour to address this, soooooooo.... looking at the HUGE crowds we have played to on this 4 band bill so far (all singing along to our METAL songs & with PLENTY OF GIRLS in attendance), I gotta laugh- I ain't the youngest dude in the world, but from my vantage point, the METAL SCENE appears to be doing just fine. I, a dude from the punk scene of the 80's (AHEM... punk rock existed long before Warped tour, btw- I know, because I WAS THERE) who somehow became the singer of a METAL BAND, just became a nationally best selling author- I've met PLENTY of younger fans who have bought my book, & many were FEMALE. Lamb of god, a METAL BAND, has a new album out- at this very second, we are in a VERY TIGHT race with Jill Scott (an awesome R&B singer I am a fan of who has a HUGE audience) for the VERY TOP slot of the Billboard charts, & if enough folks buy the album before Thursday, we will have our first #1 record- Jill Scott has a much larger fan base than us, but metal fans actually BUY RECORDS- even if we get a #2 or #3 (AGAIN, by the way- not our first top 10 debut), it will still be HUGE. There's TONS of YOUNGER METAL BANDS too- the metal scene is ALIVE & HEALTHY, & it will continue to GROW & the younger bands WILL become headliners, if the fans support it- so far, that DOESN'T seem to be a problem. So sorry, metal isn't watered down pop BULLSHIT for the teeny bopper masses, but it is HEALTHY. So thanks for coming out, buying our records, & singing along, y'all! Thanks for forming new bands & keeping it alive! We appreciate & love you! We ain't pretty, but we are definitely HERE, & I'm not bald or fat. 5d

drandallblythe I must take this moment to thank everyone who has picked up my book, DARK DAYS, so far. Yesterday I got an email letting me know that I may now add "National Bestselling Author" to my previously dubious string of credentials (now I can put it on my business card right before "Four Time Grammy Loser", hahaha- STATUS!!!!). Because of you kind people, DARK DAYS landed #21 on the Publisher's Weekly list of the 25 top-selling non-fiction hardcover books in the entire country of the United States of America- this is by the numbers, folks. I wrote a book, the best book I could at the time. I put everything I had into it given the amount of time I was allotted (deadlines, deadlines). I did the very best I could to artfully tell a true story (& hopefully a USEFUL story- this is VERY important to me). I tried my hardest, & I am proud of my work. But YOU PEOPLE made me a BEST SELLING AUTHOR. YOU! You who bought my book! I can't tell you what this means to me. I honestly can't- it chokes me up. It's actually a dream come true for me- and I mean that VERY literally. So thank you. Just thank you. #DARKDAYS #nationalbestseller #youpeoplearethebestandmeltmyheart #leicadluxtyp109 #morebookstocome 6d

  •   diego_r777 @drandallblythe I just watched As The Palaces Burn and it's crazy what you all went through, I love that all your friends, fans and loved ones stuck by you through out the whole thing. They even show Corey talking about that first show you did with @lambofgod & @slipknot in Iowa, and how you had cleaned your self up. Having been through such a crazy moment, you handled that situation so well. Very inspiring, like with your music and your photography, you can feel the deep emotions. I started to really get into @lambofgod a little over a year ago and I've just been watching the interviews, the live concerts on YouTube, learning songs on guitar, and finally, last week on Friday I went to my first concert, the first date of your new tour, the first day your new album came out, it was as if there couldn't have been a better timing. So excited to pick up your new book (& yes also Corey's!) thank you so much for making such rad music, for being such an awesome guy, I really look up to you guys and admire you!!! @drandallblythe @willadler @adler_chris @lambofgod 3d

drandallblythe Final post in today's "behind the book" photo series- my editor Ben (@bschafer714) in his editor's office. The photo is a reflection from an antique Federal-style mirror- I love photographs of reflections. It's good for me to document the process of my first book and its release- one day, many books from now, when I have gotten my writing chops sharpened to a razor's edge, I will look at these photos, & remember myself as a relatively young 44 year old man & first-time author, & I will remember hanging out with my editor in West Hollywood the first time I ever had a book signing in LA. Good times- thanks @bschafer714 for taking a chance on me as a writer! DARK DAYS is in it's 3rd printing now, the reviews have been great so far, and the support has been phenomenal from you, the readers. Thanks so much for reading my first book! #leicadluxtyp109 #DARKDAYS #readanddestroy 7d

drandallblythe Like I said in the last post, my editor Ben (@bschafer714) worked with Allen Ginsberg for a long time. Ginsberg (besides helping to redefine American poetry), was an obsessive documentarian, taking photos of everything & keeping every little scrap of paper he had ever written on. I stopped by Ben's crib in Hollywood to see how an editor lives- have you ever thought about someone you know who lives far away & tried to imagine what their house looks like? I definitely did that with my editor- in my mind, Ben lived in a tiny apartment with books stacked to the ceiling, an ancient ashtray overflowing with cigarette butts on an old desk over-flowing with manuscripts, & possibly a cat. Kinda like a more punk rock version of the set of "Masterpiece Theatre" (maybe because Ben used to live in NYC, where apartments ARE tiny). In fact, Ben's place was pretty spacious & very neat (but there were a lot of books- I would have been severely disappointed otherwise). He even let me take this off the wall & shoot it- it's a photo (printed from the ORIGINAL NEGATIVE) of Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs- Allen Ginsberg took this photo & gave it to Ben. The inscription describing it at the bottom is handwritten in an ink pen. For you non-literary types, this is a historic photo of two Beat-generation writers- the Beat writers HEAVILY influenced rock and roll. It was INTENSE for me as a writer, a photographer, & a musician to hold this thing! The living room of 206 E. 7th St in Manhattan (where this photo was taken) must have been a cool place to be at that time... #leicadluxtyp109 #readanddestroy 1w
