directher @THR: When Oprah Winfrey was filming The Butler, her co-star David Oyelowo handed her a DVD of "Middle of Nowhere." He said, 'You have to watch my friend Ava's film,' "recalls Winfrey, 61. "I did and immediately Googled her. I remember I liked her glasses and her countenance. There was an energy about her that came right off the page. I knew immediately we were going to be friends." Since bonding at Winfrey's Montecito, Calif., home in May 2013 ("I created an entire Mother's Day event at my house just so I could talk to her," laughs Winfrey), Ava DuVernay has seen her relationship with the media mogul morph from awestruck fandom — "I was not myself around her for a year. I was weird and awkward," she says — to trusted partnership, as Winfrey took on the role of producer and co-star in their lauded best picture nominee SELMA. The two now are embarking on their next shared venture, a dramatic series for OWN, Queen Sugar, in which Winfrey also will star. "The series is about reinvention, self-discovery and calm in times of chaos — themes I was attracted to before Selma," says DuVernay. "Also, all the best people working in film today are now working in TV. McQueen, Fincher …" Chimes in Winfrey with a smile, "And DuVernay." #wow #love #respect 2w

directher "Black films can't travel overseas." That same old tired lie was proven wrong yet again tonight. We enjoyed a gorgeous gala premiere of SELMA at the Berlin Film Festival, complete with sold-out crowd and standing ovations. Over a thousand moviegoers gathered in that German venue, all focused on the work of unapologetic black artists. I'm jus' sayin'. Onward! #berlinale15 3w
  •   taurusvirgofan I fell in love with Selma as I sat there in the theater with my 14 old son. I thought it was brilliant and moving and perfectly done. I love the cast and felt u couldn't have found two better p to play Martin and Coretta. What a beautiful tribute to them and all the ppl during the civil rights movement. 1w

directher My first Grammys was a blast! @Common + @JohnLegend were exquisite on stage, closing out the show with class and style. Lots of love for SELMA from fellow artists on the floor of Staples. And an excellent afterparty with friends and freshness by @djdummy. Can't beat that. Good times. xo. 3w

directher My most meaningful night of the whole awards season happened two days ago in LA thanks to the African-American Film Critics Association Awards. The brainchild of Gil Robertson and hosted beautifully by @nischelleturner, the night was filled with good friends and good vibes. Beautiful speeches by Chaz Ebert, Tyler Perry, Gina Prince Bythewood, Stephanie Allain, Tessa Thompson, Debra Martin Chase and Susan King moved me. David Oyelowo's Best Actor acceptance speech had me in full tears. The great directors Julie Dash and Neema Barnette presented me with the Best Director Award which was extremely emotional to me coming from them. And Kathryn Bigelow presented the Best Film Award to SELMA much to my great, great surprise and great, great delight. Oprah kept me company as my tablemate throughout the evening and I was so grateful to have my first chance on any stage this season to tell her how much she has meant to my life. An incredible evening. I thank every single person who made it so. A blessed memory. Thank you, #AAFCAawards. xo. 4w

directher A little over 200 British interviews between the both of us in three days. Plus, the European premiere, six photo shoots and five public post-screening conversations, including a Parliament screening in the House of Commons. London was no joke. Very lovely. Very warmly received. If you've got people on that side of the pond, let them know that King and his comrades are coming to town next weekend when SELMA opens in the UK February 6. xo! 1mon

  •   monomutapa Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU @directher for being so thoughtful, relentless and uncompromising in your vision and collaborative spirit in making #Selma. It's 02:26 in Stevenage, England and I finished watching it 3 hours ago and I don't think I've yet fully comprehended and processed the magnitude with which this film has penetrated my being. You have succeeded in making a truly astounding piece of art, a poignant and unforgiving re-telling of history and a portrait of a man, of a movement and of a state of consciousness that the world so desperately needs right now, that I so desperately needed. I honestly can't tell you how much of a shift you and your collaborators have caused in me and I thank God for your staunch efforts and your undeniable talents just as much as I thank God for Dr Martin Luther King Jr and all the leaders of the civil rights movement - for that's what everyone who took part in any way was, a leader. Selma not only speaks to the racial and civil rights injustices of it's time but it speaks to social change across all cultures, races, religions, sexual orientations and communities today and you have opened my eyes to that and for that I thank you. This little black boy from Zimbabwe truly and sincerely thanks you for honouring the love, sacrifice and spirits of Dr MLK Jr, of all our brave forefathers and of those who stand together for equality, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You have validated and inspired me ma'am not only as a person of minority ethnic origin, but as a member of society and as an aspiring filmmaker: and I must add that you have done so in a truly stylistic, breathtakingly aesthetic and cinematic fashion! You have given me a new found sense of purpose and responsibility for myself, for the gifts God gave me and for my fellow man. May God bless you and continue to grow the already flourishing garden in bloom that is Ava Duvernay. Much love and respect goes out to you, David, Mama Oprah and all the amazingly talented people who collaborated to make this film a reality #SelmaIsNOW #GLORY 3w
  •   directher Thanks all! Thanks, @monomutapa! 3w
  •   ms_king_of_queens I took my mum to see Selma as an early valentines date tonight! We just got home... We're just in awe! This film I have no words! There's a glory about this film! As I sat and held my mums hands I knew It was a moment I would never forget! The night we watched Selma! Life changer! I'm inspired to give the world all that I've got! Thank you @directher 3w
  •   monomutapa @directher your humility is inspiring but like my aunt always says "The truth is for free!" so no need to thank me, you all deserve the recognition and good things coming at ya! 3w

directher "And present gratitude
Insures the future’s good,
And for the things I see
I trust the things to be;
That in the paths untrod,
And the long days of God,
My feet shall still be led,
My heart be comforted.
O living friends who love me!
O dear ones gone above me!
Careless of other fame,
I leave to you my name.
Hide it from idle praises,
Save it from evil phrases:
Deeper than written scroll
The colors of the soul.
Hail to the coming singers!
Hail to the brave light-bringers!
Forward I reach and share
All that they sing and dare.
The love of God and neighbor;
An equal-handed labor;
The richer life, where beauty
Walks hand in hand with duty.
Ring, bells in unreared steeples,
The joy of unborn peoples!
Sound, trumpets far off blown,
Your triumph is my own!" My friend, you are loved. Happy, magnificent birthday to you. xo
