directher Thanks to MovieMaker Magazine and Michele Orange for featuring SELMA on the cover of your Winter edition! The fact that the issue launches at #Sundance15 is particularly lovely for me. My old stomping grounds! We appreciate the love. xo 2d

directher A heartfelt thank you to the legendary, lovely, lively Henry Louis Gates for inviting me and SELMA to Harvard earlier this week. For calling the film "masterful." For defending its place and its intention. For championing my voice. For reminding folks that history is in the eye of the beholder and that the gaze of women and people of color matter just as much. You are one of this country's foremost African-American historians, and you highly recommend SELMA. Thus, this smile and this hug. xo. 3d

directher Here is a small note that they will never see, but I must post it anyway. Projecting a film that I made with my comrades in the White House for the President and the First Lady - for THIS President and First Lady - was as stunning an experience as I've ever known. The first film to ever screen at the White House was "Birth of a Nation" or as it was previously titled "The Klansman." That was in 1915. Last Friday, "Selma," a film about justice and dignity, unspooled in that same place in 2015. It was a moment I don't have to explain to most. A moment heavy with history and light with pure, pure joy all at once. President Obama's introduction of SELMA in the presidential screening room, the quality time he and the First Lady took with us before and after, the stories he shared with my editor and cinematographer, the praise she gave our dear cast, the handshake he gave my father, the hug she gave my mother, the laughter, the smiles, the extra time they gave us all long, long, long beyond when we were scheduled to go, the warmth, the respect, it was just beyond exquisite. "I'm proud of you," she said to me. "We're proud of you," he added. I'm proud too - of them, of us, of the film, of this moment in my life. Who knows what lies ahead. But what has already occurred is food and fuel and fire and freedom. To President Obama and First Lady Obama, it was a dream I never dreamt, a dream seared in my memory like a scar from a fight won. The kind you look at every now and then, and just nod and smile. I thank you. xo. 6d

directher This is one of my favorite photographs of Dr. King. Unburdened. Fresh. With the future in front of him. Did he ever think we'd still remember him today? Did he ever think he'd live on long after his physical body was gone? I wonder. How do we live on? What do you remember about the people in your life who've gone home? Smiles like this one. The love they gave you. How they made you feel. On this day, his national holiday, let's love a little harder, let's fight a little stronger, let's embrace the future in front of us. Wishing everyone a smile like this today. What a smile. What a hero. Onward. xo 1w
  •   crystaleneal1 Your words are so beautiful, poetic and profound. 6d
  •   margylovesmlb Mine eyes have seen the Glory of The Lord in Dr. King in his smile in his words in his respect toward mankind & most of all in the fact that Dr. King did this all for LOVE so yes we must love a little harder, better & deeper because it cost so many so much! 6d
  •   mialebron Can't wait to read your biography. You write beautifully. I love that "...like a wound from a fight won." Very touching. 6d

directher 27 black business leaders have done the unprecedented. Created a fund for 27,000 NYC students to see SELMA for free! Let me repeat that. Because of the generosity and activist commitment of 27 black powerbrokers, tens of thousands of 7th, 8th and 9th graders of all colors and creeds in New York City can walk into a participating theater, show their report card or student ID, and see a major motion picture centered around African-American justice, dignity and liberation - completely free. Can I get an amen!? A history making act of service. I thank the patrons of this tremendous effort who decided to do this. I salute them with all my heart, all my respect. directher Saying goodbye to a fun time at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, where last night our very own #DavidOyelowo was given his first award for SELMA. I say first because his work is absolutely exquisite and my highest hope is that the world stand up and take notice of his exceptional talent. As #BradPitt said in his introduction of David last night, learn the name now because you're gonna be saying it for a long, long time. xo 3w

directher A beautiful time yesterday as SELMA unspooled as the Opening Night Selection of the Palm Springs Film Festival. My VERY FIRST festival experience as a filmmaker was in Palm Springs. I remember how I felt when I opened that first acceptance letter for my short film. And I remember the feeling when an audience gathered for the first time in the dark to watch something I directed. Sheer terror giving way to pure joy. I remember it all clearly. And wanting to make more and more. That was 2006. Happy to be back in Palm Springs. 3w

directher Many good people worked hard with me this year to share the epic story of many good people who worked hard in 1965 for us all. For so many critics to embrace #SELMA, and for so many moviegoers to spend their hard-earned money to experience it, made 2014 absolutely delicious. I learned more this year than in any other. Formative stuff that will stay with me. And I had the time of my life. Onto the next one! 2015, here we come! Let's be bold and brave. Onward! xo! 4w

directher Five theaters in five hours with David on SELMA's Christmas opening day! What an honor. We snuck in to watch folks from Hollywood to Century City to Baldwin Hills looking up at the images, the light from the screen falling beautifully on their faces. All kinds of faces. Older and younger. Black, white, brown and everything in between. All classes and cultures. All sitting together in the dark, watching the film we made with our friends. I can't even describe. Thanks to all who bore witness on Christmas! And advance gratitude to everyone checking it out this long holiday weekend and when we open everywhere on January 9. Incredible! xo! 1mon
