directher Look at this line-up! So proud! A couple days ago, I emailed my black filmmaker pals and asked them to stand with @AFFRM's mission of supporting varied voices in cinema. These 42 beautiful artists said YES! Tomorrow, we'll take over Twitter in an unprecedented online gathering. It's all to raise awareness and encourage new members for @AFFRM. We'll be interacting with filmlovers via hashtag #ARRAY. Ask your favorite director a question and network with other filmlovers. Then consider becoming an AFFRM Rebel at arrayaction.com. Let's be the change. Join us! xo 1d

directher Seven years ago today, I was on the festival circuit with my very first film, a documentary made for about $8k that I cobbled together paycheck to paycheck. I was so proud to be sitting in that chair! Speaking as a filmmaker! Wow. I remember this day so clearly. We have to invest in ourselves, ya'll. We have to invest in our own dreams. Before we expect or ask, desire or inquire for other people to invest in us. I don't mean just money. I mean invest with our whole heart and mind, every ounce of our time and talent. Make something. Do something. However you can. Don't wait. The law of attraction ain't a joke. Reminiscing up in here like CL and Pete, lol. Alright, happy long weekend! Onward! xo 4d

  •   atothef Indeed! Would love a film REALLY exploring the life and sacrifices of Betty, Coretta, and Myrlie. Their stories need to be told. I suspect they are not because in many instances the movement left them to fend for themselves when their husbands were murdered. 5d
  •   tieuellegacy I think the film called Betty and Coretta was done a few years back with Mary J. Blige. It was straight to dvd I think. 2d
  •   tieuellegacy This pic looks like the infamous dolly shot. 2d

directher Today is my mother's birthday. Born in South Central Los Angeles in 1954 as the youngest of three. Raised three daughters and graduated college as a single mother while working full-time until she met and married the love of her life. Had two more sons, climbed the corporate ladder in Cali, then made a radical career change, moved out state and became a pre-school teacher. Always the life of the party with the warmest energy. A true beauty inside and out. Happy Birthday, sweet Mommie. Your life inspires me. Love, love and more love. Avy. xo 1w

directher Tonight, I celebrated the 83rd birthday of this freedom fighter. This time last year, we weren't even shooting SELMA yet. Our first day of principal photography was a year ago tomorrow! What a difference a year makes. And this gentleman was there for me through it all. So tonight I salute Ambassador #AndrewYoung. Ever onward, sir. Thank you for all the stories, advice and prayers. And a beautiful, beautiful birthday to you! xo 1w

directher Earlier this year, I logged 174 interview requests about film diversity in one day. That day happened to be the day of the Oscar nominations. A flurry of outlets wanted my "reaction." Requests came from all over the world. I wondered where all those folks had been all this time. It was suddenly a hot button issue. Black actors. Black filmmakers. Inclusion. Diversity. Bottom line? These issues weren't new. But it took something folks perceived as dramatic to get attention. As a society, we do that a lot. But, we've been here. Doing the work. Eight films by filmmakers of color released by our own hands since we launched @AFFRM. Because the stories we tell each other matter. The images we consume matter. What we support and don't support matters. Please consider standing with us at arrayaction.com. The link is in my bio. We need you to continue. Thanks sincerely. xo 3w

  •   itsmealii Ava you are amazing and you truly deserve all the recognition, attention and praise you're getting. We need more people like you! Selma blew my mind so I went to the movies twice to be able to make my 14 year-old brother watch it because I think we need to educate the young generation. I cried like a baby and he did too. Thank you 3w
  •   phila_tyekana Hi Ava. I'm a journalist in South Africa and would love to interview you for one our local magazines. It would be an honour to talk to you. 3w
  •   filmstudent23 Your creative work on Selma was exceptional. Your dedication and perseverance show me how to keep my head up and to keep pushing forward, regardless of being a women and African American - there’s more to us then what’s on the surface. Thank you for being a positive influence on the African American community and for women that want to work in film. 2w

directher What a joy to attend the premiere of director Phylicia Rashad's latest play last night! My goodness, she is a directing dynamo! I need to shadow her, for real! If in LA, check out her work with brilliant playwright @tallpowerpaul's wonderful #IMMEDIATEFAMILY at the Mark Taper Forum. So good! xo 3w

directher Happy #CollegeSigningDay to all the young folks who are able to continue their education. Special shout-out to those attending my alma mater, UCLA. Go, Bruins! And love to all those getting their education on the job, out in the world, from the grand School of Life. Just as valuable and worthwhile. Onward. xo 4w

directher My youngest brother Nic and I are 16 years apart. For a long time, we had nothing in common except family. He was fiesty and opinionated from the start. He'd climb on counters and run and jump and was just, well, a little boy. I was in my late teens and out of the house and not paying attention to anything other than myself. But time is a lovely trip. We've gotten to know each other as adults and I'm so blessed by that. And by him. All my love to you @silkthestoopkid on your 26th birthday. Drink in this beautiful life and savor it all. Your big sister. Avy. xo 4w

directher I'm in the long line to get into the #WHCD ballroom last night when a sister staffer approaches me and asks if I knew I was on the list for a photograph. "Oh, I just took a few back there on the red carpet. Thanks, sis." She shakes her head no, politely. "No, Ms. DuVernay. You're on the list for a photograph with the President." I blink several times, then like a dork, "Um... The President?" "Yes, the President and the First Lady." Deer in headlights. Not sure how many seconds are passing with me just staring at her. Finally, she saves me. "Ma'am, would you like to follow me to the photo area?" Clears throat. Straightens shoulders and fakes cool. "Yes. Yes, I would." And that's the clumsy story of my photograph with this elegant couple. #potus #flotus #awkwardblackgirl 1mon

directher White House Correspondent's Dinner last night. My first dreams were of being a journalist so I've long watched the affair on CSPAN. It was a little surreal being around so many journalists though and not having Nepal or Baltimore come up in dinner convos or red carpet exchanges. Interesting. Sending thanks to @thomsonreuters for the unexpected invitation, @jamesknox for the threads and the fab local makeup and hair artists pictured here, @beautynthebride + @noireboss1, for sprucing me up. Thanks, sisters. xo 1mon

directher Last night, SELMA screened at the United Nations to a standing ovation. Robust discussion afterward with diplomats and students. Then I had the honor of announcing that every high school in America will receive a free copy of SELMA. I swear, that was a better feeling than any red carpet. Onward. #selmaforstudents 1mon
