depaulu “There’s obviously a huge gap between those who can afford legal services and those who cannot, and the wider the gap, the greater the social injustice that exists in the world,” said Sue Lee, who graduated with a Juris Doctor in May from @depaullaw. “I felt like I wanted to be a part of bridging that gap by providing those legal services." Recently, the Skadden Foundation awarded Lee with a prestigious Skadden Fellowship. She will work with Cabrini Green Legal Aid and primarily focus on juvenile and adult expungement and the issues young people face surrounding criminal records, which Lee believes is one of the most difficult legal issues facing the underprivileged today. “So many people, even after they’ve served their time in prison or completed their community service, and after their case is closed, are still suffering the consequences of having a criminal record for many years. Somehow, an employer lawfully or unlawfully gets ahold of one’s record, and that person may face barriers to employment, housing, or public benefits. It’s all affected, and certain people are unable to move on in their lives, and I feel that that is an injustice,” said Lee.

depaulu "For students preparing for a life in medicine or public health, non-scientific skills—seeing, listening, communicating and connecting—are both incredibly important and sorely lacking. That’s why I call the museum sessions 'Art Rounds'—to emphasize the tie in to how doctors examine and talk about patients during hospital rounds.Follow the link in our bio to find out why pre-med students at DePaul are learning in art museums. #pre-med #medicine #nursing #healthsciences #health #art #museums #observing #listening #DePaulUniversity #DePaul 2w

depaulu “I come from a developing country, Iran, where many educational, health and other resources are not readily accessible. Having a service mission is something that I personally value and believe in,” says Mojdeh Bayat. An associate professor of early childhood education at DePaul, she took the lead in establishing DePaul’s new doctoral program in early childhood education, which focuses on the most recent research in child education and development, as well as child’s behavioral and mental health issues in the metropolitan area. “The program has attracted a group of extraordinary, enthusiastic, intelligent and very active doctoral students,” Bayat says. “We are working together to establish a child and family lab, in which we will not only conduct research, but implement innovative interventions to promote child mental health and family well-being and resilience.” #Children #mentalhealth #behavioral #well-being #resilience #service #values #education #earlychildhood 3w

depaulu Meet Nicole Capsopoulos, a 2010 DePaul grad who earned her bachelor’s degree political science. During her junior year, Nicole took a Chinese politics class taught by Professor Phillip Stalley. “I had no idea how it would change the course of my life,” she said. She developed a fondness and passion for China because of this class, which led her to take a 10-month teaching job in the country. “I fell in love with the country and ended up staying there for almost three years,” she told us, “teaching English, studying Mandarin, interning with a global company and traveling throughout Asia.” Nicole considers those years some of the best of her life, profoundly shaping the person she is today. Her experiences in China and her ability to communicate in Mandarin have led her to do consulting work here in Chicago, where she partners with luxury retailers and celebrity chefs to organize events inspired by Chinese culture.

Nicole is a great example of both DePaul’s great educational experiences and our ethos. She has used what she’s learned in and out of the classroom to bridge cultures and do meaningful work. She understands the value of different points of view and the wisdom that comes from exploring other cultures.

We love Nicole’s story, and we’re always looking for more. If you have a story to share, tell us in the comments below, or copy/paste this link to get into more detail: http://ow.ly/4nstm5 #DePaulWorldReady

depaulu Who we are goes well beyond the name of our university. Our character and our spirit are tied to our core beliefs: diversity of thought, respect for all cultures and individuals, and a community that reaches out to help people from all kinds of backgrounds. As this weekend's Vincentian Service Day approaches, and many of us are reaching out to help our local communities, we’d love to hear how DePaul’s ethos has influenced your own experiences in the workplace, the classroom, or in life in general. depaulu Marketing influences everything—from the laundry detergent you buy to the trips to you take to the type of exercise routine you choose. So it should come as no surprise that marketing also influences your voting practices.

In his talk at Alumni University, Professor Bruce Newman discussed the sophisticated use of marketing in politics and how its lessons and applications can be leveraged across other industries. “Marketing is all about knowing what the future holds for organizations of all types, and without that insight, it is difficult to succeed in business,” Bruce explains. It’s one of the ways DePaul is always seeking to infuse real-world perspectives into our curriculum and educational experience.

But the impact marketing has on society isn’t the only wisdom Bruce seeks to impart upon his students. He also lives his life by a simple, yet powerful idea: Pay attention to the moments.

This is a lesson he learned as a student himself through a chance encounter with an unlikely friend—a homeless man who once asked for his help buying a healthy meal. “He pulled out a large button from his pocket and gave it to me to keep,” Bruce explains. The button read, “New horizons, every 24 hours.” “I never forgot the power of that button,” Bruce explains, “which represented the life he led, but also made me realize that it is the moments in life that really do matter.” #DePaulWorldReady #Education #DePaul #Marketing #Business #Driehaus #LifeLessons
