davidleite Okay, I need help. What the hell are these? A friend gave us these last year and we planted them. They're too big for scallions and too small for spring onions. 3d
  •   evangelined I think that's green garlic...looks tasty though! 3d
  •   sanya_anwar Some sort of scapes? 3d
  •   saharastar You are welcome. Do they have slightly acrid taste? Wild onion, also called field garlic plants look like allium chinense, but the bulb tend to be little smaller and have acrid taste. They pop up all over our yard. Allium chinense, rakkyō also have acrid taste which need to be removed by boiling or soaking in salt water. Allium chinense or rakkyō bulb come in different sizes. Small ones are about 1cm and largest about 2.5cm. Sometimes they are called Chinese leek. You might want to email this photo and a photo of the plant (if you have) to www.kitazawaseed.com They may be able to identify. They have rakkyō bulbs for planting, but they do not ship them out of California. 3d
  •   davidleite @saharastar no, actually they had a very sweet, marvelously onion flavor. 3d
  •   saharastar Then, they may not be allium chinense or wild onion ( field garlic). 2d
  •   elliegg Baby leeks? 2d
  •   66squarefeet Hard to tell what species of Allium they are. Probably not field garlic (Allium vineale), though. 2d
  •   ozmasgirl Well, I just purchased what looks like the same. Mine are called green garlic. Do they smell like garlic? 2d

  •   everydayinnovator Nice! In my zone they are very hit and miss success stories even if you pamper them. 3d
  •   davidleite @everydayinnovator wow we have so many around the property. Most of them peeking out from the woods. 3d
