davidhulen Finally. Fresh snow on the mountain ash berries in the backyard, which somehow haven't yet been picked clean by the waxwings. It wasn't a lot but it's finally starting to look and feel like winter around here. 2d

davidhulen Nearly noon and the sun peeking up at the start of one of many waves in a high school ski race in Anchorage earlier today. The fact there was a race at all was fairly amazing, given the winter we've had. Much of the snow on the course was made this past week when it finally got sufficiently cold for the snow-making machines to do their thing. It looked great and made for a nice 2K-or-so loop, so the racers (several hundred of them) did multiple laps. And relatively warm, around 30 or so, and really pleasant once the sun was up. So a bunch of pretty happy people. What an odd winter. 2w

davidhulen A piece of Alaska history on the northern California coast: Fort Ross. The Russian-American Company established the outpost around 1812, to hunt sea otters (with Aleut hunters brought from Alaska) and then to raise food to supply the Alaska colonies. Neither venture worked out. Today it’s a pretty rich state park on a spectacular stretch of the Sonoma County coast. 1mon

davidhulen 12:30 pm in Anchorage and the sun is LOW. But at least there's sun. I went for a lunchtime walk and ran into my friends Ovie and Georgia on the skating oval. It had just been hot-mopped and they said the skating is great. 1mon
