davidavila26 Gotta keep practicing that spear throw. One of the most frustrating obstacles at the Spartan Race. You hit the target and move on, you miss and thats a 30 burpee penalty. This is crucial as missing can cost a lot of time during the race.
Hopefully this new training tool will eliminate any more misses or our team. Practice, practice, practice. That's all we can do to prepare ourselves.
Simple workout i made for this:
5 spear throws.
For every one that you miss, do 5 burpee pull ups.
That's one round.
Do as many rounds as possible in 30 minutes.
If ypu hit all 5, aside from being a bad ass, you can take it easy and do a 200m sprint then back to it.
If you have any training questions or want to start training for your next obstaclr race at the world famous Metroflex Gym in Long Beach, send me a message or ask me here!

  •   davidavila26 @chuy_ratio tires were picked up from a tire yard. Pretty much yhe extra stuff they didnt want. We made the atlas stones and Spears. The bails of hay were picked up from somewhere. Oh anolympic platforms were hand made as well. 4w

davidavila26 At the end of the Spartan race two weeks ago with some members of our OCR team. This race marks 1 exact year since I've started competing in both OCR and trail running. Still learning a lot and striving to constantly improve. Huge shout out to my team mates for all of the support during the race and especially during training. The races are challenging, but it's the training that is truly difficult. That daily grind and internal battle of doing things the right way or the easy way. Special thanks to my friend and coach/trainer @manbehindmetroflex who stands beside me during my training and believes in me even when i doubt myself. Thanks brother!
To anyone contemplating doing a race, do it! Please feel free to dm me if you have any questions or seek help/advice.

davidavila26 Sometimes we just need to change our perspective. We can get so caught up in looking at things one way, we fail to see how it can all be perceived differently. It's not enough to think outaide of the box, we need to be able to see things in an abstract way and completely change our point of view. This can change how we approach things, how we deal with adversity, and how we live our lives. 1mon

davidavila26 It's raining, it's pouring
A black sky is falling
It's cold tonight

There was a time, there was a place
But there was fear inside
A witty line to save my face
A parachute of pride
To cross the line takes a tiny step
But will the spark cause the bridge to burn?
My fear entwined with my regret
I beat a path for safe return

And when the big wheel starts to spin
You can never know the odds
If you don't play, you'll never win

davidavila26 The day before my third race in just as many months. I have 2 more races in two weeks. December 6th & 7th. Then two more in January all the way till June. It's been just over a year since I've started competitive running and it has been a pretty amazing journey.
I've succeeded and failed in my goals but have learned along the journey. I have been face down in the mud and climbed the highest peak in the area with amazing views. I've fallen down, injured myself, battled the elements, got stung by bees on my neck twice in one race and the stingers got stuck and stayed in until long after the race, and still continue to press forward.
I continue to run in the Elites and I've questioned that choice, particulary after the Spartan Beast in monterrey. However, pride has kept me in and the will to act. It pushes me to train harder, learn more, and push even further beyond my comfort zone. I look at some of these amazing atheletes I'm competing against and I am inspired to be at the starting line with them and push through to the finish. I look to the people I train with at Metroflex Gym, Long Beach who's day in and day out hustle motivates me. People who take the time to share their knowledge and experiences with me I am eternally grateful for.
I was never a serious runner before and I don't know exactly what triggered this drive to compete. Maybe it was always there, dormant and waiting for the right spark to light up. Whatever the reason, I'm glad its here. I still can't put into words exactly why I do it, I just love it. Maybe that's the only reason I need. Maybe that's the only reason any of us need to do anything. For the love of it.

  •   f_benavides Nah man that's what it's all about--I'm training for "The Canyons endurance 100k" in May--it has 14k gain and drop in 62 miles--then maybe take a shot at a 100 miler in Oct. 2mon
  •   f_benavides But I'm down to run the one up in Monterrey--when I'm down south lets hit up Mt. Wilson or baldy. 2mon
  •   davidavila26 @f_benavides yea I'm not there yet.... haha... though there is a possibility I'll be doing worlds toughest mudder in 2015.....for now im focusing on the xterra trail runs and spartan. Come by mwtroflex one day and do one of our workouts with us. 2mon
  •   f_benavides For sure--a very successful ultra runner (Nickademus Hollon) ran the Toughest mudder and "DNF'd" but he had just came 2nd at "Tour de geants" (200 mile race) in Europe a couple months back--Max King won an obstacle race with a big purse earlier in the year though. 2mon
  •   davidavila26 @f_benavides when are you down here next? Theres a 21k on january 11th. Me and ben are gonna do it 2mon
  •   f_benavides Not sure--the lottery for "Way too cool 50k" starts December 7th if I get in I'm going to focus on that race--I wouldn't mind a 21k as a tune up but I'll get too sucked into the "competitive" side haha 2mon
  •   vky_jay Thank you for the motivation :) 1mon

davidavila26 Mix up the training. 15 thrusters with a log and 15 burpees right after. This was in between rounds of pull ups, kettle bell swings, and running for multiple rounds.
Variety is essential to any training program. Strength and endurance are both critical aspects of fitness that should be trained consistently.

davidavila26 With Team Rubicon engaging in some GoRuck training at Santa Monica. Always good to have a solid team behind you that has their mind set to purpose. I truly believe that overcoming physical adversity will enable the mind to overcome any adversity. Unfortunately we have become a society that is too soft and too comfortable. We don't face challenges to overcome and break us out of our confort zone.

Fortunately, we live in a time where we can easily find these challenges. No matter what you seek conquer, you can find it. Make the time to challenge yourself and improve yourself. Get out there and train.

What's the worst that can happen? You get a little more fit?

davidavila26 Get out there and train. Nothing will get done if you don't do it. Miles will never add themselves up and mountains will never be climbed unless you do. I'm baffled when people are "training" for an event but don't do what they are training for. If you are doing a running event, go run in the terrain you plan on competing in. It's like trying to be a powerlifter and train like a body builder. Find trails, make time, and go. Surround yourself with people who push you out of your comfort zone and encourage you to be better than what you currently are as an athlete and a person. 2mon

davidavila26 Caught this during my run yesterday. I was just running and noticed the fresh puddles of water from the rain were at a stand still and created this reflection. All I had to do was change my perspective. Sometimes we all need to do that. First 6 miles of the month. I have a series of races coming with December and January consisting of 4 races back to back. One friend told me "that's insane! Awesome!" and another "k". Two different takes on the same plan. Yet one had more experience with these events and the other limited. Each coming from different perspectives see the same situation in a different manner. We all should. Lets open up our minds and approach things from a new perspective. Adapt and overcome. 3mon

davidavila26 Getting dirty during training. Some heavy kettle bell carries mixed in with wall junps, rock wall climbing, heavy tire flips, and running. Best way to train for a Spartan Race is do try and emulate the conditions of a race. So fortunate to have a training facility like Metroflex to train for these races using the appropriate equipment. DM me if you are interested in more information on how to best prepare for your next Obstacle Race. 4mon
  •   davidavila26 @moonpraiser what are your goals and what are you currently doing? 4mon
  •   moonpraiser This is going to be a super long comment! My only real definite goal is to lose 10lbs because I'm tired of competing in jiujitsu at the weight class I am. These girls are all much taller and bigger than I am and probably most of the reason I'm as heavy as I am is because I have super strong leg muscle (everyone says I have the strongest legs in my martial arts school ), though I could stand to lose some fat probably. I feel like I'm being beasted by upper body muscle every time I compete. But more generally I want visible muscles in my arms and I just want to be stronger overall and have more endurance. I've made quite a bit of progress over the last year or so but I feel like I'm at a plateau. I train jiujitsu 3-5 days a week depending on my schedule. I run 2-3 miles once or twice a week (I have a messed up knee and ankle so I can't really do more than that in the running department sadly), and I jump rope probably 5 days a week for 10 minutes. I've started lifting weights/doing kettlebell things/etc. but I am still a baby to lifting and I'm still trying to get in my groove and figure out what works to me. My workouts are consistent during most weeks unless I'm sick or have to travel for work or something. And I HAVE to vary my routine or else I get bored. 4mon
  •   davidavila26 @moonpraiser well the strenght training will be your biggest asset. You need to train in something that will delvelop the explosive power you need for ground fighting. Are you familiar with powerlifting? Why dont you stop by the gym and check it out. I can show you a few things 4mon
  •   moonpraiser I know what powerlifting is but I wouldn't even know where to begin, so anything you can show me would be much appreciated. What days and times are you there? 4mon
  •   rufitforlife15 Amazing! 4mon
  •   davidavila26 @moonpraiser almost everyday. Sunday thru thursdays. When can you come? 3mon
  •   davidavila26 @rufitforlife15 thanks! 3mon
  •   moonpraiser Mostly I'm only free Saturdays but I might be able to make a Sunday free. I think I still have your number. I'll text you if I can come in this Sunday. 3mon

davidavila26 Rope climb with a rucksack packed with bricks. Halfway through the fundraising event put on by GoRuck and Team Rubicon. Having this group for support and motivation went a long way to reaching the top. So glad that rope climbs are part of the regular training program we have at Metroflex. More importantly, we passed our fundraising goal! Thanks to everyone who donated and came forward on short notice. 4mon

davidavila26 Training on the beach. What an amazing experience it was to do some training with Team Rubicon & GoRuck. Great event with even better people.
This was one of the few times we had our packs on (loaded with bricks for weight), but that surf was tough. Trying to do exercises in the water was difficult but felt so good in this heat. Our packs were heavy yet the lightest compared to all of the equipment we had to carry. Double that weight with some casualties and the result was some great training, sore muscles, and an unforgettable experience. Talk about coming full circle, I participate in an event with a great group of Veterans and active duty military on the 12 year anniversary of my boot camp graduation. Definitely looking forward to doing more work with Team Rubicon and GoRuck.
