davidangell Gwaith Dur. Words that mean so much to many.
My name is David, I was named after my great Uncle David from Port Talbot. David, my Grandma's brother, worked at the steel works there (and Wyndham and Rich). For many in the UK today may know it as 'Tata Steel'. It's got me thinking about Hometowns. This picture is of my hometown. Hemel Hempstead.

During the Second World War, my grandad Jesse met someone, who like him immeasurably impacted my life, my grandma Iris. They met in the steel works town of Port Talbot. Moving to his hometown of Hemel Hempstead, it became his and her home. That's where I was born.

The current news of the fate of my ancestors' hometown being decided by people who will never know the significance of the words Gwaith Dur - hits home how fragile our Hometowns are.

It made me think of this: "Now Main Street's whitewashed windows and vacant stores. Seems like there ain't nobody wants to come down here no more. They're closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks. Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they ain't coming back to your hometown."

Gwaith Dur. Steel Works.

Hometowns are fragile.

  •   ljgolightly Like Middlesbrough it takes the heart out of the place. It's sad to see. X 4w
  •   rosiebrooke I'm so sad that these kind of things continue to impact us all. I am going to keep trying to buy locally and pay a bit more for something British knowing that it might keep someone in their job. 4w
  •   lilems1 Everyone I know from Port Talbot has a family member who works at the steel works... It will devastate the community, this remind me of the coal mines being shut. Port Talbot will need economical regeneration of some kind otherwise it will leave a massive community without jobs :( xxx 4w
  •   michellefclark Very well thought through and put. Little n big picture, links between the two, geography n human relationships, chance meetings ... Excellent. 4w
