  •   davidalanharvey @maggiesteber Hey sweet Maggie.. here today gone tomorrow . It's sooo nice here now it's killing me to leave. New York bound. Do you happen to be there? Come visit. Clean sheets cold beer best weed. Big hugs23h
  •   pourieye 🏼🏼🏼 23h
  •   maggiesteber Sadly I missed you I was in New York for a weekend workshop I missed you sadly. Next time and thanks for the invite. 12h
  •   ggnb @davidalanharvey Just finished listening to your interview on the Candid Frame. I didn't know that podcast existed until Arthur Meyerson told me about his interview and I listened to that. It was very inspirational to listen to your story and just wanted to thank you for being so willing to share your honest thoughts. It is meaningful to then see these Outer Banks images right after listening to that podcast. I also submitted to the Magnum/LensCulture call for entry this time because you were one of the jurors. To be honest I haven't been a huge fan of these types of contests. I would rather make work I care about and believe in rather than try to grab the attention of people who are going to be looking at thousands of images. (Not in my instagram per se) but I tend towards trying to have meaning in photographs and layers and aspects that take time to see so it's not exactly award-winning type, attention-grabber stuff. But the grueling process gives me meaning and fulfilment. Just wanted to express a heartfelt thank you and nothing else. Happy Memorial Day--with your father's background and all I hope that this is a weekend that has good memories for you. 4h

davidalanharvey Retro. Outtake. This is one of the most difficult environments I've ever shot. Poison sulfur gas spewing out at the bottom of volcano Kawah Idjen on Java, Indonesia. Dozens of workers take a precarious "trail" down inside this active volcano to carry up on their backs slabs of sulfur. Can't be healthy. I was wearing a pro gas mask but felt a bit guilty since the workers only had bandanas over their nose and mouth. To shoot I had to remove the gas mask and hold my breath as long as I could. Needless to say that didn't really work so well. Getting here was a long long trip for me. 30 hours flying, 3 hours boat, 6 hour hike up the volcano, and 3 scary hours trying to go down inside. And 4 miserable hours going back up. Just to take one picture. I went up and down the volcano 3 different days. Exhausting plus breathing bad stuff. Yet the workers do this day in and day out. All for a Kodak film ad to show the color yellow in nature. Stop and think about it. There's lots of green and blue in nature but not much yellow besides fall leaves and yellow flowers. So it took a bit of research to find something naturally yellow that would make for a dramatic photo. Worked out great though with double page spreads in many magazines. Taking pictures isn't so hard. Access and just being there is what takes so much time and effort for pro photography.. One must be a bit of a maniac to be an on demand photographer. Everybody has great pictures somewhere along the line. The diff for pros is that you must do your best like NOW...that's a whole different ballgame ..#indonesia #sulfer #volcano #workers #yellow 2d
  •   davidalanharvey @irwangunadi I hiked up there in the dark and was there for early morning. I can't imagine how that yellow could ever turn blue in any light. All shade of course brings in a bluish tint. Yet when the sun hits it's very yellow . And it is spelled Kawah Ijen according to every Indonesian map 1d
  •   irwangunadi Sorry I mean not the yellow stone turn blue, but if you shot very early in the morning (still dark) you can shoot blue fire and blue lava 1d
  •   amyausetrohn Wow! Love the stories behind the shots! 18h

davidalanharvey May 2016. A skimboarder zips across the low tide flats at sunset. Skim guys are mostly that.. guys. Teenage boys, not many girls. Most graduate to surfing or skateboarding. Same family. Tight. Board riders. I never tire of watching wave riders. Many skim boarders can run to the sea and catch a wave, maybe throw in a surfer style trick. In a helter skelter world it's nice I think to capture the little moments of poetic grace that do indeed fly by faster than the wind. You can't keep a moment but you can at least recognize its existence. I think that's the best we can do. #skimboarding #outerbanks 3d

davidalanharvey This photo is from my book Tell It Like It Is. The super skateboard guru @tonyhawk saw it and posted on his Instagram as one of his favorite skateboard shots in terms of pure skate spirit . David Liggins here in 1967 pushing up his street in Norfolk,Va. on a skateboard fashioned from a piece of plywood and using roller skate wheels. THRASHER magazine photographer Joe Hammeke @ham_n_cheese is the recipient of this signed archival print. I sent one to Tony Hawk as well. My good neighbor Frank Brown @obxhomepage helps me in the darkroom, watches over my house when I'm gone and feeds/loves my cats. Skaters rule. I would kill myself on a skateboard yet definitely identify with skaters as artists in their own right. #skaters #skateboard #skatelife #skate #trix400film 3d

davidalanharvey I have two ways to get away from the computer and phone. Bike riding and building a fire inside or out. I actually shot a story about OBX for NatGeoMagazine using one lens and biking distance from my front door. I've invited this audience to pop in on Snapchat to get a mini sort of workshop. I took online readers with me once before while I was shooting my Rio book Based on a True Story. Yet this time check me out behind the scenes on Snapchat.davidalanharvey All together over the next 6 weeks my goal is to make it fun education..At least some of you will be able to find it useful .Video by @nicolchves #burnmagazine #snapchat #outerbanks #jockeysridge 4d
  •   gwynstagramz @willstackable since you're all into snapchat now... You should check this out. 3d
  •   widyaka Hi David u rock!, what's the cruiser bike you're riding? 3d
  •   chinaski11_foto You are great! 3d
  •   davidalanharvey @widyaka It's a stock Electra..super comfy ride..and at low tide it rolls nice down the beach... mostly it makes you feel like a kid on summer vacation..a good head spot 3d

davidalanharvey Mariah Leal Paes from Rio de Janeiro was a finalist in BurnMagazine's Emerging Photographer Fund 2015 and I Skyped with her a few days ago. I usually take pictures when I'm speaking with someone on Skype or FaceTime and have a fun little series of portraits. Search Mariah on Burn and see her essay .Our EPF is being juried right now with the recipients being announced in early June . 10k for the top spot and 5k for the Fujifilm under 25 category. Mariah's essay Mom Tales was a poignant portrayal of her addict mother. Stay tuned for EPF winners .See my behind the scenes on SnapChat user name davidalanharvey #EPF #burnmagazine 5d
  •   davidalanharvey @nialloleary I'll be in London third week of June . Perhaps we will meet 4d
  •   nastalopes Nice photo! Is this contest open every year? 4d
  •   davidalanharvey @nastalopes Yes every year. Keep your eye on BurnMagazine for results and new announcements 4d
  •   nastalopes @davidalanharvey thanks for tour reply! I saw BurnMagazibe website and the deadline for this year has already gone, but I will search for other opportunities :) 4d

davidalanharvey For those of you who follow me here on @instagram, FB or BurnMagazine, you already know I'm a bit odd. I embrace the new media and at the same time am firmly rooted in tradition. I use the social media as a relevant platform and also make silver gelatin prints in my darkroom here at home. I'm always working on a new book, shooting always, yet next week my full on concentration will be on other photographers. Those in my New York workshop. Because of Burn and my natural inclinations I pay lots of attention always to photographers who may need a boost of mental energy. Or how to make the most of where they are and simultaneously take a step forward. So in the interest of embracing new technology I created today a SnapChat account. Check it out. Now I'm just experimenting but I think I can do something creative with it . I think I can make it something useful for my audience. Behind the scenes yes. Yet in a way that makes it primarily an educational resource. A free workshop. Fun and games on SnapChat? Oh sure there is plenty of that in my life. Yet everything I do is part of building something. Could be a book could be a magazine assignment could be an exhibit. Things I think many of you at least want to care about. So come along this week as I prepare for my New York workshop. We are gonna SnapChat the whole thing. I've got helpers!! Then come with me to Rome and my Tell It Like It Is exhibit and then on assignment for a major magazine, the details of which I cannot reveal yet. Then to London. Maybe Poland. Then to Thailand in the fall and a bunch of things in between. Well let's see how it works next week in New York. We don't have anything to lose by trying it and you have nothing to lose by checking it out. We all gain. Symbiotic energy. Always my goal. User name on SnapChat is davidalanharvey #snapchat 6d
  •   cathyscholl @davidalanharvey Thanks for the reply DAH. I see all your posts on Instagram. I was just wondering if a video diary type post would work here also...since I can view it on my computer and not use up all my monthly data! I totally understand the advantages of Snapchat and love it...I just need to see if one of the "schemes" for viewing it on a computer would work...I watched a couple of stories yesterday and already used over 500mb in a few minutes! I agree with your comment that the fact that it comes and goes is more like life itself. I will be watching as much as possible wherever you post! :) 4d
  •   davidalanharvey @cathyscholl Well we all use the social media in specific ways. IG is simply my daily diary. Could be a family shot could be a retro photo but most likely it's a photo that's at least a sketch or slice of a current project in real time. Snapchat just allows more of a real time behind the scenes view. I'm only gonna post 1 IG per day and w Snapchat I'll have 20 posts in 24 hours . So IG for actual pictures. And Snapchat for the process 3d
  •   cathyscholl @davidalanharvey I totally understand the different advantages of Instagram and Snapchat for what you are doing. I just have to find a way to participate with a limited mobile data plan. I'm trying to find a way to tune in. I just wish Snapchat (or someone) would come up with a way to view it on a computer. 3d

davidalanharvey A week left at home and I'm soaking up every moment. By the way the only reason I give you my thinking process is to perhaps help some of you who may be interested in the narrative process I use to do books and for magazine assignments. To help you think of your own potential projects. So I'm relaxing and yet my mind is racing at 100 mph .. next book . anguish.. BeachGames ? Or Family Drive? I'm somehow shooting on both simultaneous . Nuts. Or maybe not. Tonight dinner with friends and my fave Tortuga's and window reflections for the BeachGames folder. #obx 1w

davidalanharvey Nicol is looking at the mess on one of my work tables and rather than deal with trying to explain to her this organizational nightmare she must fix, I resort to just making this iPhone shot. My randomly sequenced press proof sheets from my Rio book "Based on a True Story" are tacked to the wall. One of these days I'll get organized. One of these days. #outerbanks #iphone 1w
  •   davidalanharvey @peterdavidgrant These proofs are from our book press printer in Verona. Simply to do any color corrections etc. right before doing the entire book run. 1w
  •   peterdavidgrant @davidalanharvey ahh ok. I'm on the hunt for a cheap way of printing for edits - selecting on a wall is so much more conducive then a laptop screen. 1w
  •   davidalanharvey @peterdavidgrant Yes I just get the cheapest prints I can find to go to the magnet wall for structuring the book. The heart 1w
  •   peterdavidgrant @davidalanharvey do you have a printer you use at home? My laser is rubbish for pictures and the photo printer eats the cash! Yeah I'm moving into a new place soon and want to make a magnet wall for just that. Thanks! 1w

davidalanharvey This is a small section of the jumbled mess of stuff that sits on the narrow mantle over my fireplace. I never actually placed anything on it in any particular order nor for any particular reason. Things just ended up there. My whole decorating scheme is no decorating scheme. No theme. Random. But whatever it is must be the real me. 1w

davidalanharvey Sand fence. Jockeys Ridge State Park. May 17, 2016. Spring storm. Yes, I travel . I'm now ready to roll on an Italian adventure. Yet I'm always shooting at home as well. I lead a modest lifestyle but I am luckily bordered with this state park which is effectively my front yard. I even think it's "mine". Nobody ever wanders into these near dunes except me and my cats who follow.#outerbanks #nagshead 2w

davidalanharvey Oh my one of those spring days when family and friends spontaneously gather for a sunset drink at the Nags Head Fishing Pier. Sweet Lyla of course the main reason I'm shooting. She tends to dominate every situation. As it should be. This stuff just flys by way to fast. Just can't quite grab it. Pictures at least help. #outerbanks #nagshead #iphone #littlelylamaryanna 2w
  •   mysoulcandance_celisa Lyla photos are the best 2w
  •   michaelnicknichols she has hair 2w
  •   itisinthesauce This is the only beach where I questioned my ability to make it back to shore. Wild & beautiful though. 2w
  •   belindalawley Lovely photo of the important things in life. Your description of how it's important to try and capture childhood, how it just flies by and how you just can't quite grab it really resonated. 1w

  •   kim__mcb Hahaha @bambamphoto If he had a pony... 2w
  •   johnopdx Nice picture! Non-photo jibber jabber: When I was there as a kid, I caught a whiting in the surf on a rented rod. Wonder if that's a whiting... 2w
  •   nikigle Dramatic picture @davidalanharvey Seems like the light is hitting the fish and the background only. That makes the man even more mysterious 7d

davidalanharvey I live in a surfers town. If the surf is up, and your house is on fire, you can call the fire department and those guys will show up. But forget getting your roof repaired until the surf dies. Every construction dude is sitting on a board. No apology or excuse needed. It's an unwritten rule here. Surfing rules. I like this idea. Hell I can get my roof fixed later. When a good swell comes in it's nature's art and the men and women who ride these waves are artistic athletes. No tv replays. Nobody getting rich doing it. Each wave a one time event/experience. These youngsters pictured here are competing in a surf contest. Yet competitions are not for everyone. Most have no desire to compete. They simply want the ride. There is already enough competition in life as it is. I don't have the patience to sit in front of a tv and watch an entire ball game. Too passive for me. I'm a terrible spectator. Yet I can sit on the beach and watch the surfers all day long. Maybe it's because nobody loses. Winners all. #outerbanks #nagshead #surfing 2w

davidalanharvey Crazy stuff happens on my street in the outer banks. Things I just can't see in New York. Endless entertainment of the highest order. davidalanharvey Morning coffee. This is my last in the series from Tangier Island, Va. '73. I thanked them then and I thank them now the warm hearted Tangiermen and their families who allowed me into their lives. Scroll back to the cover shot to see this 9 picture sequence. The story set me off on a career at NatGeo and subsequently I went all over the world photographing a wide variety of people and cultures . Yet nothing else was ever quite like Tangier. I will go back this summer. #tangierisland #kodachrome #chesapeakebay 2w
  •   rebeck_p They have their similarities that's for sure @davidalanharvey! I guess that's what makes this series so relatable & appealing. It's a very beautiful image in its own special way 🏽️🏽 2w
