davidalanharvey Stepping out. David Liggins in 1967 on his homemade skateboard fashioned out of plywood and roller skate wheels. David is one of 9 members of the Liggins family I photographed for my book TELL IT LIKE IT IS republished now for release by BurnBooks next Wednesday. Also part of a large size 65 print exhibition of my work for LOOK3.org opening JUNE 11 for Festival of the Photograph. I put my heart into photographing the Liggins in 1967 and I've put my heart into making this book now. #tellitlikeitis #skateboarding #burnbooks#look3#norfolk 16h

davidalanharvey Big Island, Chesapeake Bay Va.. Fisherman and daughter. The islands of the Bay have interesting yet isolated communities. Outsiders generally viewed with a wary eye. Crabbing and fishing are the primary economic resource yet always in the face of a variety of environmental issues. #chesapeakebay #islands #virginia 2d

davidalanharvey Springtime fresh Kodak snapshot that I just couldn't resist! The air is simply magic in the outer banks in spring..warm during day, coolish at night, windows open for good sleeping..I have lots going on. Ready to launch a book and big print show in the works definitely has an edge to it...all the more reason for a light touch.. #obx #spring #pinwheel #littlelylamaryanna #nagshead 3d

davidalanharvey Her name is Chelydra Serpentina Serpentina. Her pink tongue simulates a worm to attract minnows or small fish which then become breakfast. Her mouth opened now simply as a defense against me. An intruder in her space. She should know by now I am her friend. I'm a turtle/tortoise man since childhood. How do I know she is a she? Because this is egg laying time down here in the marshes of the outer banks. The only time you can see snappers out of the water and moving around on land is in spring for egg laying. The eggs don't have much of a chance with fox and raccoons around. Yet some make it after 90 days of incubation. If by some miracle a baby does make it to the water and survive the first few years , then there are zero natural predators. However ,crossing the highway is not something these prehistoric looking creatures were hard wired to protect themselves against. So they are dependent on motorists like me who will stop the car and move them to safer ground. This full grown ( probably 30 lbs) female just showed up in my front yard about sunrise as I was having morning coffee. I did not mess with her because she didn't appear to want to be messed with!! I wanted to point her in the right direction, yet she had a mind of her own and slid off into the bushes. I hope to meet her again next spring. #obx #easternsnapper #turtles 5d

davidalanharvey Self publishing seems to be a wonderful thing, and I highly recommend it. Yet at some point a lot of books will arrive at your front door. Larry from FedEx has just brought me 700 pounds worth of Tell It Like It Is. The rest will stay in Italy where it was printed. Do I have space in my house for these? No. My house already looks like a factory anyway. Prints all over books all over. Larry from Fedex grew up in Norfolk not far from where I shot this book. On a straight line over that dune about 75 miles. I love books for showing work more than the Internet, yet my laptop only weighs a pound. Everything is a trade off. Still the smell of ink when I cut open these boxes will be intoxicating. Thanks Larry for your extra effort today. #fedex#obx #burnbooks 2w

As much as we are marginalized and demonized we are the backbone that keeps this country moving.. Much love....Kevin, Art Center Photo Grad and PROUD IBEW blue collar worker... davidalanharvey Some think I travel all over the world. I do. At the same time I have a whole lot of home porch time and literally go nowhere for days. A hermit. Even in New York I stay home mostly. So here I am AGAIN shooting photos of my granddaughter Lyla and my cat Ditto alias Blackbeard. I am home and focused now on one very big thing. The imminent release of Tell It Like It Is and its subsequent big print show at LOOK3.org in June. Here on my porch are test strips of the 60x40 inch silver gelatin prints I'm having made by Digital Silver Imaging in Boston @digsilver .It's a massive undertaking and I won't sleep again until June 15. I'm also printing in my darkroom. 8x10 fibre single grade silver prints from Tell It. To go with the 100 limited edition versions containing the print by me, a replica of the original book and 38 contact sheets (the whole shoot) and of course the new version of the book just printed in Treviso. Intended for serious collectors , museum and university collections. The new version of Tell It will of course be available as single copies as well at a modest price . I must cover my costs, yet a significant part of the profit for Tell It will go to the Liggins family who took me in almost 50 years ago and allowed me as a guest and to photograph in their home. Also I will soonest be setting up a scholarship fund for young talented black photographers in the US. High school age I think. Book profit goes there too. Pay back pay forward. That's my deal since forever. #tellitlikeitis #obx #look3#digsilver #littlelylamaryanna 2w

davidalanharvey Iraq war vet Tom Waterworth, 33, on his back porch with his 7 week old son Reid in Richmond, Virginia . Tom was awarded the Bronze Star by the U.S.Army for his service in Iraq. Tom is now in the real estate biz in Richmond yet thinks often about Iraq. "I think the government needs to take better care of war vets. Help them to get on with their lives after they return from combat. It's not easy to re adjust for most vets"..Mostly now Tom simply wants a peaceful life ahead for little Reid.@tommywaterworth #postcardsfromamerica #magnumphotos #monochrom 2w

davidalanharvey "I survived the Vietnam War without getting shot. I was a medic. So I come back home to Louisville and some punk kid shoots me in the back" says Richard whose wife Bonnie shows me the bullet hole entry. Ironically, Richard is the key subject in one of the most famous of Life Magazine Vietnam War photos by John Olson during the Tet Offensive of Richard tending to a dying soldier. "I hated school so I joined the Marines after the 10th grade and went to war" says Richard. Like many vets, Richard's life went awry after the war .He served 3 years in prison for multiple drunk driving charges before meeting Bonnie his wife of 28 years. "I stole her from another man she was married to who wasn't treating her right. Went up to his house and just put her in the car and drove away". #postcardsfromamerica #magnumphotos #monochrom 3w

davidalanharvey Renee is feeling the spirit at First Friend Ministry. This Pentecostal church has no building of their own and they meet in a basement conference room in a hotel at the airport in Louisville, Kentucky. Feeling good on Sunday mornings is their objective. Said the pastor " you gotta let the roots of your tree go deep when times are hard" Amen. #Pentecostal #postcardsfromamerica #magnumphotos #monochrom 3w

davidalanharvey Louisville, Kentucky. Kyle Liburd and his 1 year old son Kaedyn hang out in their front yard right across the street from Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. Their vision of the Derby was simply to watch the spectators leaving at the end of the famous horse race. Kaedyn is just taking his first steps. The mood in this neighborhood, where it is unlikely anyone actually went in to see the races firsthand, was jubilant. Everyone in Louisville seems to enjoy the Derby regardless of physical proximity to the finish line. Magnum colleagues Martin Parr and Peter von Agtmael were with me shooting for Postcards From America, an ongoing Magnum group project with a book and exhibitions upcoming #Kentuckyderby #postcardsfromamerica #magnumphotos #monochrom 3w

davidalanharvey Hanoi, Vietnam. I run with young boys into the New Years giant fire cracker bomb explosion which knocked us all flat. In celebration. This part of Hanoi was heavily bombed by the U.S. just before an American withdrawal in 1975. I went to Hanoi in 1976 for NatGeo. At that time there were no diplomatic relations with Vietnam, so I was pretty much on my own with writer Peter White. We were watched carefully but treated courteously. After all the war was over and they the victors. 40 years ago today a truce. After more than 300,000 dead. Now Hanoi a major international tourist zone and Vietnam a friendly trade partner with their former enemies. #Vietnam 3w

davidalanharvey Bryan Harvey at my house in the afternoon light. I shoot anyone who stops by in this light. Bryan lives two houses down. With my faves Michelle and Lyla. Bryan is my number one advisor. He cuts me no slack. For my own good. Bry is an artist who makes films and designed my book ( based on a true story) to many accolades for design. Soon to be an iBook app. Bryan mostly wishes the surf was up today. He lives for those waves. @bryanharveyfilms 4w

davidalanharvey I don't really drink lots of coffee yet I pour lots of cups of coffee. Few are ever actually finished. So here at the end of the day I have a ridiculous lineup of half full half empty coffee cups lined up on my porch railing. And all over the house too. In the car. Around the yard, under trees, and in the darkroom. Makes no sense. I have a fresh pot brewing right now. Smells amazing. 1mon

davidalanharvey Spring weather makes it impossible for me to leave home and impossible not to just take family snapshots. Isn't that what spring is for? Lyla is on her own and can move FAST and requires constant surveillance from Michelle and Bryan. My role is easy. Just stay out of the way!#littlelylamaryanna 1mon
