davidalanharvey Luckenbach, Texas. Just a wee bit south of Texas dead center. Hill Country. Well, just country. In the middle of the day, on a hot tin roof, struts the now famous Luckenbach rooster. Not far away is his soul mate hen just a branch or two up in the oak tree watching his every move. Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson probably summed it up best with "Luckenbach Texas" recorded in 1977 with these lyrics: "The only two things in life that make it worth livin'
Is guitars that tune good and firm feelin' women
I don't need my name in the marquee lights
I got my song and I got you with me tonight
Maybe it's time we got back to the basics of love"... I'd just spent two days watching love manifested in a wedding, so the lyrics and the rooster and the country vibe all made perfect sense to me. May 2016. #texashillcountry #luckenbachtexas #fujixpro2

davidalanharvey LeAnne and Matt Boyd have been married for less than a minute and walk up the aisle in the Texas Hill Country just as the sun goes down ( lucky for this photog). Matt is on the pro golf tour and LeAnne is a teacher. I wish them both a loving life together. #texashillcountry #weddings #fujixpro2 @loyd @ofemendez 2d

davidalanharvey Photo proof of a flying leap from behind wedding bouquet toss theft. I only shoot weddings of family and friends, yet this adds up to a lot of wedding photography over the years and I'm even considering a book on the collection. Competition for the bridal bouquet toss is fierce and "steals" seem to be fairly common and all really is fair in love and war. Last night I partied hard yet never stopped shooting. As usual. Dancing is after all great psychological and physical exercise. The wedding of Matt Boyd and LeAnne Falsone in the Texas Hill Country was a teary eyed sentimental service followed by a raucous dancing party, as it should be. I love weddings. They bring people together in a way no other event in life does. The big warm. Family bonding. The bouquet toss winner certainly believes this to the core. Nice catch. #texashillcountry 2d

davidalanharvey I love photographing weddings of friends and family. I'm here now in Texas Hill Country immersed in wedding prep at the home of my dear friends photographer Michael Loyd Young @loyd and his wife Ofe @ofemendez. Mike's books "Blues, Booze & BBQ " and " Beer, Bait,&Ammo" speak to his roots. His book upcoming "Boots, Bourbon & Brisket", on this Texas Hill Country, rounds out his obvious trilogy. 5 hours from now Ofe and Mike's son Matt will marry LeAnn Falsone. Pictures coming of wedding and party to follow of course. Mike's best buddy Miller is taking it all in as the ladies makeup. #texashillcountry 3d

davidalanharvey Every time I leave home I tend to post a family picture. I'm leaving for Texas hill country for a few days, yet I always get homesick fast. So I always shoot my home scene daily. Mostly just snapshots at dinner or whatever. For the record. The diary. My grandfather and mother both kept prodigious diaries, so I suppose I follow with a visual version. Lyla has eyes to mesmerize, love is the prize, I do surmise, those eyes so wise.#littlelylamaryanna 5d

davidalanharvey For the last few years I've struggled with doing two books simultaneous. It doesn't sound like an idea I would recommend to anyone. Off for a Family Drive was in the works years ago. Then I dropped it. Now I've brought it back and am ready to make a very large print of the North Dakota picture above from that book ( to be). Yet I'm also in the middle of shooting BeachGames which at one point I thought was done a year ago but then decided to keep going. So for me to be happy there's gotta be a bit of anguish, perhaps a bit of drama, a bit of infatuation, all part of needing that "fire in the belly"..Very very luckily I arrived to a point where I can focus only on the sweet tensions of artistic pursuit. This is something I feel I can pass on to others. Just a tiny twist of the key can change the way you think which of course leads to the way you work. Come to my loft in NY June 3 for student slideshow/party. See the essays shot earlier that week. It's always a show to be seen and the photo community of New York is there. The "warm up band" for the student show will be an iconic photog as always. Celebratory party follows as usual. Check out www.burnmagazine.org if you wish to join the DAH workshop circus. I think there are 3-4 spots left. Springtime in New York. This one will rock it good.@magnumphotos @burnmagazine 1w

davidalanharvey It's Bike Week in the outer banks. Harley Heaven. There's all kinds of activities from cole slaw wrestling to bikini contests to prayer service to the Wall of Death photographed here. Where else can I see two guys riding around throttle cranked hard inside what is effectively a large wooden barrel pulling 2 g's like fighter pilots? My family doesn't want me getting a Harley but I'm always tempted when I see some of these bikes which really can be works of art. I raced motocross at 16 yet never even thought of attempting the Wall of Death. I ended up enjoying a road Ducati in high school and took long trips alone, my sleeping bag strapped on. Slept anywhere. My first teenage sense of independence came from that motorcycle. Yet maybe my family is right. No time for a Harley. However it's fun to think about it. #motorcycles #obx #bikeweek 1w

davidalanharvey I'm teaching my granddaughter Lyla,2, how to look at life through a viewfinder. To have the eye of a hawk and the deftness of a deer. She gets it. I'm also teaching her the difference between the dozens of pictures she sees on the iPhone and the tactile nature of fine prints and finished quality books. She gets that too. She listens, she learns. I'm training her to be the recipient of the Emerging Photographer Fund (EPF) grant in 20 years. Right now in 2016 BurnMagazine is awarding $15,000. in grants for an emerging photographer through the Magnum Foundation, supported by generous private donors, and Fujifilm for the 5k Young Talent Award for photographers under 25. I started this @burnmagazine fund in 2008 to aid worthy emerging photographers who needed a boost with projects of merit. We have an international jury of respected curators and editors to choose this year's recipients. See BurnMagazine.org The EPF recipients will be announced at LOOK @look3festival in Charlottesville,Va in early June. The deadline for your submissions is May 2, 2016. Lyla is growing up bombarded with images at the same time she's learning to speak and write. Learning two languages at once. Maybe a little Spanish too. In any case I will try to impart early for her, as I do with all those I mentor, the importance of finding her own voice, her individual authorship, and her precious special offering in an often chaotic world. Looking at life through a viewfinder is not myopic. Sorting moments and shapes and emotions in a " frame" only opens a panorama of unlimited creative possibilities and high adventure. It's all about the eye. Go Lyla!!#littlelylamaryanna 2w

davidalanharvey Trying to decide if they are gonna paddle out one more time. If the surf was fantastic, no decision. Surf in the dark. Yet when it's good but not great, maybe another rum punch works best at sunset on Jobos beach Puerto Rico. April 2016. I continue with my work on BeachGames #Jobos #puertorico #surfers #surflife 2w

davidalanharvey I've locked it down. My first week long shooting workshop in my New York loft in two years. Well I've been running around shooting BeachGames. Anyway, I'm back. May 29-June 4. Intense week of mentoring 12 students to developing their own visual authorship. Guest curators, photo editors, and iconic photographers will also join us. I stretch my students to their limits. They too will shoot a photo from our rooftop, as here, I'm sure. A popular hang. Yet their real work will come from the streets of New York. In whatever form they choose. Join us if you dare a life changer!! Link in profile 2w

davidalanharvey Foam party Amnesia club in Ibiza, Spain. One of twenty photographs now hanging Paul Paletti Gallery in Louisville,Ky. I went a little crazy on this assignment for NatGeo staying on Ibiza for two weeks when I went thinking I'd stay only two days. I just got wrapped up in the scene. This foam party was only once per week so of course I needed to shoot it twice. It took some convincing for the managers to let me up into the ceiling area where all the lights were rigged. This was taken about 4am. The lights were constantly changing and I had only one frame that looked like this. Leica M6 and Kodachrome 200 film. #ibiza #kodachrome #foamparty 2w

davidalanharvey Early morning light hits a Catholic Church in the middle of a sugar cane plantation in Bahia, Brazil. I had been photographing the cane cutters for several days when I came across this quilombo settlement and church deep inland. I could only imagine what it might look like on Sunday morning from the air. Yet I gambled it could be spectacular since the church faced east. So I drove several hours back to Salvador and tried to remember all the twists and turns on dirt roads. I convinced a helicopter pilot to take off before sunrise because I thought if we flew super low I could find my way back to the quilombo. For awhile we were lost and flying aimlessly. I couldn't find the church in the dark. Then just as the sun came up we spotted the church and the locals all headed for early Mass.
