davidalanharvey Nags Head woods. A seemingly "country ride" just back from the beach and a totally different ecosystem from the rest of this barrier island. Now we've got snow on the way .#OBX #nagshead #xpro2 8h

davidalanharvey Goodbye party for Liaryz Ramos after she assisted me non-stop for a whole month. Whew! Wonder Woman as any former assistant would agree. A month with DAH can't possibly be easy. We met while she was a character in my recent Fuji XPro2 campaign shot in Puerto Rico . So from PR to Miami to Tokyo to Outer Banks and now New York then back to Puerto Rico where she will assist @michellemaddensmith at our workshop in Old San Juan next month. My neighbors Frank and Dawn are special new friends. Thanks Li for your good spirit and tireless work. Wishing it was all worth it . Safe travels amiga. #OBX 1d

davidalanharvey Salvador, Bahia (Brazil). This was one of 22 choices for this audience on my second small print sale which ended last night at midnight. A big thank you to those who made a choice. We had a Cuba print sale a year ago and now this from Brazil. This helps to fund our BurnMagazine team since we accept no advertising and are about to announce our annual 15k Emerging Photographer Fund grant shortly for this audience. For those of you who purchased these prints I honestly feel you made a good investment. So far the art books and prints we've made available in the last three years have all gone up in value inside the collector market. Michael Courvoisier, our master printer, will now make your archival pigment ink prints, I will sign en verso and recto, and we will ship to you as soon as possible. This photograph was made on Velvia iso50 film using a tripod and small flash with a Leica M6 during boxing practice in a Salvador favela. This appeared in my book "Divided Soul" (Phaidon). It's unfortunate that favelas seem to be known for mostly illicit activity when in fact there are so many positive programs for sports and the arts. Ballet classes, art classes, music classes etc along with sports programs make the favelas in Brazil a bastian of positive thinking on so many levels. Tough stuff? Sure, and I've photographed that too. Yet in our helter skelter world it seems that showing positive occasionally as a reminder of some of the good aspects of human nature doesn't hurt. Again, thanks to all who participated in our Brazil print sale. #brazil #bahia #salvador #boxing #velvia 2d

davidalanharvey Last hours for our small print sale .Rio de Janeiro. Children's day during Carnaval at the Sambadromo. These young girls were simply waiting to join the parade and their mother put them in front of the wall for a portrait. I was going to shoot one and then the other, then saw this. One of 22 picture choices of my Brazil work on special sale until tonight at midnight. Over. Until then for $125. you may own an archival pigment 6x9 image size (on 8.5x11 paper) signed front and back. Go to my link in profile here or to Burnmagazine.org I cannot ever make for sale these images in this size ever again. So limited by sale time and size. My finest exhibition printer Mike Courvoisier is making every print. Free shipping inside US. Flat rate international. One of the things i love about a life in photography is the constant discoveries daily. I literally don't even have close to any two days being alike. Never get bored . So I make sure I don't get bored. So I get out of the taxi in front of Sambadromo and before me are these children getting made up and then this seemingly simple activity changes your life. A few intense seconds turns into a pleasant people to people exchange. Then a photo . Then a print . Then a book. Then a big print on a museum wall and all I did was get out of a taxi with no clue what I would see in the next miliseconds. Magic. Miracle. Revelation. Best drug out there. All comes from the wellspring of total openness. At least that's how I play it. #rio #brazil #carnaval 2d

davidalanharvey Rio de Janeiro. Photograph made with Leica monochrom in 2015 and is now the most likely candidate for my upcoming BeachGames cover picture. You have until midnight tonight to choose from 22 images for $125. a 6x9 image size( on 8.5x11 paper) archival pigment print. Never can I ( legally) ever sell this print again in this size. Signed front and back. So you can mat over signature or keep it. En verso the best guarantee always for serious collectors. Shipping included inside US. International flat rate. It's a new picture and has already been exhibited widely. Irony of ironies I was with my Rio workshop class last year at this time when I made this photograph. We were all headed to check out the storm. Rio must have a collective big hangover about now . Carnaval just over. Well it's a nice headache to have . #carnaval #rio #brazil #leicamonochrom 2d

davidalanharvey Salvador, Bahia (Brazil). Carnaval is probably most famous in Rio, yet for a festa in the streets it's hard to beat Salvador. This photograph is one of 22 I'm offering until midnight tonight in a 6x9 image size for $125. Shipping included for U.S. and international flat rate. These archival pigment ink prints are limited edition by size ( I cannot print in this size again) and by the 5 day sales deadline. See link in my profile here or go to BurnMagazine.org I like to get in the middle of things and made friends with these men hours before they were made up for the parade through the city. By the time they were in the thick of it I was able to be in the best position simply because they knew me and my moves and I theirs. It's a spontaneous ballet of sorts moving in and out without interrupting their flow, without tripping and falling while walking backwards in the dark, and maintaining control over the lighting for something you've never seen before and have no idea what's coming next. I used a Leica M6 and Velvia film and a small strobe on camera for this photograph published in NatGeo and my book "Divided Soul" (Phaidon). #bahia #brazil #carnaval 3d

davidalanharvey Rio de Janeiro. Beach sellers are everywhere all the time. Mostly with things you need. Drinks, food, etc and in this case decorated magnets. I shot this picture with an M9. Published in NatGeo story on Rio. It's one of 22 choices from my Brazil work being offered on my TIME LIMIT small print sale which ends Wednesday night at midnight. 6x9 image size on 8.5 x 11 paper. Archival pigment ink. $125. See link to BurnMagazine store in my profile here or go to burnmagazine.org These prints smaller in size than larger more expensive collector prints yet same quality and are being printed by Mike Courvoisier who has printed for my exhibitions and large collector prints. •   davidalanharvey @paffius It depends on the situation. Here I didn't approach anyone. I was just another sun bather sitting in a beach chair having a caipirinha. Of course I was working, but nobody around me thought I was "working". Casual outside appearance, intense on the inside. Body language, eye contact is everything. Other times I'm already friends with everyone around. If I've photographed total strangers from the shoot first and ask later mode I send immediately an iPhone shot or two and later a larger selection. A print may follow in many cases. All in all I try to be the anti paparazzi guy.. I love the paparazzi types like Gilden but I just can't do it . 4d

davidalanharvey Rio de Janeiro. Trans shower room. 2015 from a Leica monochrom file, this image sings in print. 2 days left on my Brazil small print sale. 6x9 archival pigment image size on 8.5 x 11 paper. $125. until midnight Wednesday and then never again this picture in this size. Limited by both time and size. Link to Burn store in my profile here or go to BurnMagazine.org Free shipping inside U.S. , flat fee international. Because of my dear friends and top producers Roberta Tavares and Dan Immel, I was given good grace to hang and shoot in a trans house of prostitution in Lapa. A few ladies did not want to be photographed but most were fine and we all became friends. I had prints made for all and brought them back the next day. My feeling after shooting in this brothel for two days? Well they were nice people. Struggling to earn a living. Not saints for sure but I don't pass judgment on anyone. We talked we laughed we took pictures. Nice vibe all around. #rio #brazil 5d

davidalanharvey Christ figure under full moon.Corcovado. Rio de Janeiro. Only 3 days left for my Brazil small print sale. 6x9 image size on an 8.5 X11 piece of paper. Archival pigment print made by master printer Michael Courvoisier. $125. Limited by time and by size. Link to Burn store in my profile above. Or go to BurnMagazine.org. All details there on these prints which are smaller than an expensive collector print yet every bit the same otherwise. For the next 3 days we are also selling 5 signed copies only of my original edition of Based On A True Story which is now 10 times its original value in the collector market. I'm doing what I always do. Make quality stuff. Always collaborating with family/friends. Some of it is premium priced indeed, and worth it. I put my name and reputation on the line for everything. Proven in the market. Some of it affordable for young photographers and new collectors yet with zero drop in quality. This goes for my workshops, my books, and my prints. All of them priced premium yet fair and also plenty of free workshops, and book giveaways, and free portfolio reviews, and print donations and well sales like this one. That's my biz model. Basically a break even biz model. Keeps me on my toes. Keeps life interesting. Learning and shooting is the only way for me. By the way the helicopter pilot who flew this for me was supposed to have landed 20 minutes before we did. Low fuel because he wasn't prepared to fly past dark and we were supposed to land at an unlit field. But I couldn't resist pushing it a bit to get the light just right. Carnaval is happening Rio right now. Corcovado reigns above. Sinners repent. #brazil #rio 5d

davidalanharvey I always tell those I mentor to never leave a scene til it's over. Like really over. This parkour artist told me he wasn't going to jump again. So I turned my attention to the couple in the foreground. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Wilson Crispim running to jump. I decided to just stay focused on the couple yet still treat is as an action shot. Anyway this photo will play a role in my upcoming BeachGames book and has already been exhibited widely. Up until midnight Wednesday February 10, you may acquire a 6x9 image size print of this for $125. Link in my profile here. Printed by master printer Mike Courvoisier. Free shipping inside the USA. One time deal. Limited edition by size and by time. I can never print this size again. It's Carnaval now in Rio. Yet it's always festa time in Rio. Go if you have not. Try to escape if you are already there!! Ha . No place is like Rio. #fujifilm_xseries 6d

davidalanharvey As you can see from my feed I'm home and lazy. My friend Liaryz ,who we met on my Puerto Rico shoot, just assisted me @magnumphotos workshop in Tokyo. She will assist @michellemaddensmith and me next month in Puerto Rico for our workshop in Old San Juan. Please come to our student show March 19. The class is sold out yet we are still seeking more applications for the gratis scholarship workshop we will give to a worthy young Puerto Rican photographer. Also a work/study slot available for another Puerto Rican photographer. Pass the word. I just don't want any local photographer to not know about this education freebie. I will also do an afternoon of gratis portfolio reviews for PR photogs. Please leave a direct message to Liaryz @iridiscencia_ if you qualify for this workshop. #OBX #puertorico #fujixpro2 #Fujifilmjj_xseries 1w

davidalanharvey My cats are waiting to get in the front door. They don't really want to come inside. They prefer outside no matter the weather. They only want to come in now to lead me to the kitchen to prepare their next gourmet dish. I mean they get spoiled. These cats have been running around in the rain. I always thought cats hated water. Well mine like rain for sure. A lazy rain day is nice once in awhile. Luxury. #OBX 1w
  •   richard.c.d.butler the bownish one, sitting higher perhaps even elevated in stature looks like a cross between a wolf and a devil...not to be messed with 1w
  •   kcosmickev I know that Maine coons are one of the only types of cats that actually enjoy contact with water. I commend you for welcoming in those felines into your life with open arms. Cats have been considered sacred since the times of the Egyptian Pharaohs, so enjoy them! Thank you for being so down to earth and responding to a question asked by someone like me! @davidalanharvey 1w
  •   finertye Big kitties. Maine Coon? 1w
  •   davidalanharvey @richard.c.d.butler Well both cats are vicious cold blooded killers out in the wilds around here. However Earl Grey, the big one on top, is the least aggressive of the two. He just flushes out a rabbit and the leaner faster Blackbeard goes for the kill 1w
  •   javanoted I love their names! Earl Grey is definitely a Maine Coon. Both are beauties. 1w

davidalanharvey Sweet Lyla covers her face shy for an upcoming Instax photo. She was fascinated however by prints coming out of the camera. She's used to the iPhone form of photography. For her instant prints were an advancement in technology rather than something retro. Actually pretend you've never seen instant prints and only knew iPhone or computers for seeing photographs. Instant prints might seem an advance. Michelle and Bryan are best parents ever and no little girl could feel more secure with both mom and dad at home. No absentee parenting here. Oh yea it was dad Bryan's Bday. #littlelylamaryanna 1w

davidalanharvey Ahhh the warm blue water of Rio de Janeiro. That would be now. It's summer in Brazil and yes Carnaval time as well. Some of you know I've spent recent years shooting in both Rio and Bahia, resulting in my book "Based on a True Story" and photo essays in NatGeo. In celebration of these special times in Brazil, I'm going to have a 5 day print and book offering. A choice of one of 22 Brazil images, archival , 6x9 inch image size on 8x10 paper, signed , and printed with meticulous care by Michael Courvoisier. He's a master printer and has been doing my exhibitions and collector prints for 10 years or more. I have a small stash of my original edition of "Based on a True Story" and I will sell maybe 5 of these as well. The photographs will be presented Friday, Feb 5 and the offering ends midnight Feb 10. Many of you know I make premium priced books and workshops. I love to make high quality art objects. By nature expensive. You also know I do many giveaways and free workshops and create valued items at a cost affordable to those who can't swing the higher prices. My younger audience. So this is one of those high value low cost efforts. Most of you also know that I view everything that I do as an investment for the buyer. This is proven in the market place as my books and print prices have increased after the sales to my audience. Few really want to sell their books and prints, yet everyone likes knowing their art will rise in value. I'm a collector too. Anyway, get down to Rio or Bahia if you can. An adventure you won't forget. If you can't go right now, check out my Brazil work. It's not intended to be definitive. Yet it will give you at least a taste...#rio #brazil #underwater #blue 1w
  •   davidalanharvey @lalaladyvader Hi Sierra. I don't have a set schedule nor regular place for workshops. They could be in Mexico or New York or Rio or Bangkok or as the one upcoming in Puerto Rico. I like to do them where I'm shooting for a book or commission. I usually give about 2 months advance notice both on burnmagazine.org and here on IG 1w
  •   grahammartinphoto Beautiful shot, love it. I'd really love to see a neat little book of your iPhone snaps @davidalanharvey . I realize this is not an iPhone pic and that you also post old film work here and stuff shot with 35mm cams, Fuji and other, but I'm just on the bus here with a copy of A Year of Magnum and @christopherandersonphoto 's beautiful book 'Son' and I love the solid binding and neat dimensions of both and those dreamy colours in Chris's personal poetic shots and stuff in the Magnum book that's been shot also with iPhone and Holga (Chris again). Also Kathy Ryan's book looks like a beauty. You were one of the first well known photographers I found to be using Instagram not just to promote your back catalogue, but actually to show your day to day and home life and travels shot with camera phones and it's very refreshing in this industry driven by expensive gear and clever marketing to make us all think we need and want full frame DSLR's and 100 megapixel medium format beasts. Please tell me you have in mind a little book of light and joyous Harvey observations peppered with snaps of your cat on the hood of your truck! 1w
  •   davidalanharvey @grahammartinphoto It's 2:45am here at home. I can't get over the Tokyo jet lag. So what am I doing? Sitting by the fire thinking books . Specifically my next one. A few years ago I thought of an iPhone only book. I believe in a minimalist approach anyway and my phone is usually the first thing I go for. So accessible so unobtrusive. There's a few things it can't do, yet there's a few things every camera can't do. The diary like nature of my work since childhood dictates that now is the time to do something as you suggest. The problem I have is that there is no way I can possibly produce all the ideas floating around in my head and some even half finished. So I just must decide which one NEXT. Tonight I thought I might be thinking too hard. That happens. The problem with thinking too hard is that you can miss the obvious which is always the best way to go. Stay tuned 1w

davidalanharvey My random pictures are so so random. So I'm walking down my street with three close friends who were having a beer on my front porch. Spring in February. We were all headed to watch the sunset at the beach at the end of my street. Not a single soul there except us. Suddenly comes a young woman with amazing red hair that just popped in the sunset light. Had to shoot it. Cold call. May I please take your picture? I can't do it quite right on Instagram but I can print this to look like a brushstroke on canvas. That's what I saw. Thanks Karly. I texted you the picture. #obx #redhair #fujixpro2 2w
