datachick RG @nasa: Scientists have developed a way to produce models of where the magnetic field lines are several times each day. The spiraling arcs of magnetic field lines emerge from active regions and connect back to areas with the opposite polarity. The field lines are more concentrated where regions are more magnetically intense. They rotate with the rotation of the Sun.

datachick RG @melissarae208: Happy birthday pre ️ can't believe he would have been 64! I cry at the end of the movie every time I watch it (on my 800th time ) . I pray that you know how much you have impacted the sport of running and how much people still idolize you. A true talent, pioneer, and a hero to all who follow in his footsteps. 30 years after his tragic death, Pre lives in our hearts #prelives #regramapp 2d

datachick RG @nasa_marshall: "Good luck Captain, and make sure to Instagram it." - President Obama to NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, seen here in the center, at tonight's State of the Union address.
In March 2015, Kelly and Russian Cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will begin collaborative investigations on the International Space Station (ISS). They will reside on the ISS for a year, which is twice as long as typical U.S. missions. These investigations are expected to yield beneficial knowledge on the medical, psychological and biomedical challenges faced by astronauts during long-duration space flight.

Kelly's twin brother, Mark Kelly, will almost participate in the one year mission. He will stay on Earth and participate in investigations that will provide broader insight into the subtle effects and changes that may occur in spaceflight as compared to Earth by studying two individuals who have the same genetics, but are in different environments.

datachick RG @nasa: TelescopeCollects Its 100-Millionth Image: an instrument on our Solar Dynamics Observatory captured its 100 millionth image of the sun. The instrument is the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly, or AIA, which uses four telescopes working parallel to gather eight images of the sun – cycling through 10 different wavelengths -- every 12 seconds.

In the almost five years since its launch on Feb. 11, 2010, SDO has provided images of the sun to help scientists better understand how the roiling corona gets to temperatures some 1000 times hotter than the sun's surface, what causes giant eruptions such as solar flares, and why the sun's magnetic fields are constantly on the move.
This is a processed image of SDO multiwavelength blend from Jan. 19, 2015, the date of the spacecraft's 100th millionth image release.
