cinnamonhellen Bird watching in Brighton - veterans know to bring some bags to carry dead specimens you find along the shoreline. As a newbie, I must carry mine in my hands. cinnamonhellen Absolutely #nofilter needed. Iridescence of the shell is impeccable! Guess what it is: winner gets bragging rights, and a hug :) there's only six living species, and they lives in the ocean. cinnamonhellen This...is a baby Mola Mola, or Ocean Sunfish. As adults, they are the heaviest bony fish weighing approx 2,200lbs! They eat mainly jellyfish, and are eaten by orcas, sharks, sealions and humans. A female can lay 300,000,000 eggs!!! Explains why the fry look like tiny puffer fish! #molamola #commonmolamola #sunfish #oceansunfish #fish #bony #baby #fry #specimen #atROM #workflow #jar #wetspecimen #awesome #tinypuffer #museum #lovemyjob #socool #babyfish #giantfish #cantstoplaughing #socute 1mon

  •   cinnamonhellen @lifesazoo33 yeahhh!!!! Fresh from the ichthyology department! 1mon

  •   cinnamonhellen @lifesazoo33 lol awesome, I'll be here 1mon
  •   natural_selections . I saw the fetal whale shark today!! I'd been trying to get a good look for ages, but it is inconveniently placed where you can only view it in an activities room. You can almost see it from the extinct animal display, but they had the room open today.. just had to brave an army of children! 1mon
  •   cinnamonhellen Oh yes! When it's off season, the studio is usually open and there's no one in there. Hopefully you got a good and close up look! 1mon

cinnamonhellen Collections selfie! #shameless haha! Organizing my favourite group of birds - PARROTS! Always colourful even in death. it's always a good idea to donate specimens or deceased pets to your local museum for education rather than throwing them in the garbage (morbid I know). #workflow #collections #taxidermy #parrots #rosellas #parakeets #australia #landofOZ #downunder #selfie #grassland #museumlife #atROM 2mon

cinnamonhellen You know.....just a Moa skeleton chilling in the Ornithology DNA lab, no big deal. Moas are a group of extinct species of large flightless birds endemic to New Zealand. They disappeared around the 15th century due to over hunting by humans. Before human intervention, the Moas were only hunted by the Hasst's eagle - also became extinct as a result of Moa shortage. #averageday #workflow #wildwednesday #skeleton #Moa #extinct #giantdodo #bird #newzealand #downunder #NZ #extinction #DNA #lab #doingscience #ornithology #deadthings #everythingisdead #bones #articulated #specimen #atROM #kindoflikeanostrich 2mon

  •   natural_selections Holy crap! How much of it is cast? I'm a New Zealander, always nice to see a piece of home lol 2mon
  •   cinnamonhellen @natural_selections really!? That's awesome!! Had no idea! The whole bird is a real skeleton - many were found fully articulated in swamps. Some smaller bones may have been cast but it's all real bone. The ROM traded some Dinos with Yale for the Moa and other species 2mon

cinnamonhellen Rhea face! There are only 2 species of Rheas (Lesser & Greater) both found in South America. Related to ostriches & emus, they are listed as near-threatened by ICNU. Currently still an important food source, and their skins are used to make leather. Did I mention? The males do most of the work, building nests & incubating up to 60 eggs! #rhea #southamerica #ostrich #emu #threatened #duckface #museumlife #workflow #taxidermy #mount #atROM #argentina #bolivia #chile #paraguay #peru #uruguay #stayathomedads #bigbird #ostritchesofthenewworld 3mon

cinnamonhellen Holding the skull of a Wandering Albatross, Diomedea exulans. Adult male from New Zealand. This species has the largest wingspan of any living bird. Occupying the southern oceans of the world, adolescent D. exulans do not come to land & return to their colony until approx. 6 years of age. They may not breed successfully until 10 to 15 years of age. Fledglings have approx 30% survival rate. •   natural_selections Very cool! Makes me want to pull out all my bits and pieces of ancient pottery. I've got soo much awesome stuff just tucked into bins 3mon
  •   cinnamonhellen @natural_selections really!? Should really display them! Super neat! Also got to see some Acheulean hand axes! 3mon
  •   natural_selections Nice! I need to find an expert to help me sort through my few thousand stone tools. I have locales for most of them, but no clue as to age or anything else. The pottery fragments are a mix of everything but I have a bunch of intact Precolumbian pots/offering vessels, an almost flawless mug from Mesa Verde, Roman stuff from the invasion of England, and a foot and a half tall Iroquois vessel from 1300AD. 3mon
  •   cinnamonhellen @natural_selections that is AWESOME! Wow! We should grab some people together and do a pottery party to sort out and ID all the pieces! I'll bust out all my archaeology texts & notes too :P your collection is full of surprises! 3mon
  •   natural_selections Lol I don't know what 2/3rds of the collection is. The founder/former president of the Ontario Archaeological Society passed and I wound up with a chunk of his estate as the backbone to the natural history center I am opening. Sadly the family threw out hundreds of pounds of "paper junk" that were 60 years of fieldnotes. The stone tools usually pose the biggest mysteries. Two crude tools were labeled "2myo Olduvai Gorge". There were Homo habilis specimens in the collection, but those don't seem to match with the habilis. I'm totally down for an artifact party though! I'd even bring stuff into Toronto to save some travelling. 3mon
  •   cinnamonhellen @natural_selections oh my god that's amazing! 2myo tools is what every young archaeologist reads about in text books but never get to see! Living the dream, thats incredible! Glad you're now looking after the collection though :) 3mon
  •   natural_selections I'll have to bring my Neanderthal butchering axe and habilis tools by the next time I visit! I may come out to the ROM halloween party on Friday, but not sure yet. 3mon
  •   cinnamonhellen Yes! Let me know if you decide to bring the artifacts, as well as if you come out for Halloween! I'm working during the day so won't be there for FNL :( but let me know how it goes! 3mon
